A Film Crew Trailed Carine Roitfeld, Plus a 53-Year-Old Closed the Show at Hermès

Hermes is the ultimate in luxury. So it follows that yesterday’s fall show was a luxurious experience in spite of the rain and dropping temps. The setting was the courtyard of the beautiful École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts. Heat was pumped into the tented space and waiters stood at attention with flutes of champagne and glasses of fresh grapefruit and raspberry juice. Attendees were posh fangirls in their silk Hermes scarves. This is the 1% (.05%?).

In addition to loaded VIPs and editors, a few notable names were there, both on and off the runway. Carine Roitfeld was there, making only her second Paris fashion week appearance (she was at Dior and showed up later last night at Givenchy), trailed by a film crew. Curious? Us, too.

Fashion News Roundup: Charlotte Casiraghi Is the New Face of Gucci, Daphne Guinness Is Auctioning Her Clothes, and Karl Lagerfeld Becomes a Cartoonist

Place Your Bets on Charlotte Casiraghi for Gucci: The Royal daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco (and granddaughter of Grace Kelly) may be the next face of Gucci. Considering that Gucci provides the 25-year-old with her equestrian kit, this rumor has a lot of horsepower behind it. Plus this blue blood has a Blue Ribbon in fashion: she regularly sports Gucci and Chanel Haute Couture, and she covered the September issue of Paris Vogue. Nothing official yet, so we’ll just have to wait for the photo finish. UPDATE: It’s confirmed, reports Vogue UK. She’ll appear in a four-part series to be shot by Peter Lindbergh, all with a horsey theme. {Telegraph UK}

Daphne Guinness to Auction Her Clothing: After buying the late Isabella Blow’s entire collection to save it from the auction block, Guinness will now auction off 100 of her own unique pieces on June 27. The auction will be handled by Christie’s and the proceeds will go to the new Isabella Blow Foundation, which supports young art and fashion talent. Pieces from the likes of Chanel, Balenciaga, and McQueen will go on display from June 23 to the day of auction. Guinness is known for her incredible wardrobe, so start saving your pennies now! {Vogue UK}

Spotted: John Galliano in the Marais: One figure staying quiet in the Dior debate is former creative director Galliano. He’s been spotted in Paris keeping a low profile – well, low for Galliano – reportedly wearing a beanie over his signature blond locks and a pencil thin 20′s style mustache. He was leaving a café tout seul on Rue de Turenne Saturday night. {WWD}

Jane Birkin Calls Her Namesake Hermès Bag a ‘Rather Trivial Piece of Heavy Luggage’

Jane Birkin Calls Her Namesake Hermès Bag a ‘Rather Trivial Piece of Heavy Luggage’

In anticipation of her upcoming performance at Town Hall in NYC, style icon, songstress and philanthropist Jane Birkin spoke to WWD about music, her famous and hip offspring and that bag that Hermès named after her, which happens to have just broken the world record for most expensive bag ever to be sold at a public auction. Instead of putting it on a pedestal like the person who paid $203,150 for one might, she leverages it for charity:

Them is Fightin’ Words: Hermes Tells LVMH to Back Off

Execs at Hermes told French newspaper Le Figaro that they aren’t happy about LVMH’s sudden interest in the luxury group.

“The family has clearly and unanimously said: If you want to be friendly, Mister Arnault, you need to withdraw,” said Bertrand Puech, a fifth-generation descendant of founder Thierry Hermes.

LVMH denies that they’d like to acquire the company, of which they bought over $2 billion in shares last month. But it’s obvious that a hostile takeover isn’t completely out of the question.

Fashion News Roundup: The Situation’s Fashion Debut, Hermes Goes Hipster, Plus D&G’s Film Trailer

Fashion News Roundup: The Situation’s Fashion Debut, Hermes Goes Hipster, Plus D&G’s Film Trailer

A Fashion Situation: Recently debuted on The Situation’s Facebook page, a first look from Mike Sorrentino’s collab with brilliantly-named casualwear brand DILLIGAF, which, naturally, stands for “Do I Look Like I Give a Fuck?” A new member of this gang of nickname geniuses, The Unit, models the Ed Hardy-esque tank. {Racked}

Harley does Hermes: Trying to figure out a new way to wear your Hermes scarf? Well, Hermes just launched J’aime Mon Carre (I love my scarf), basically a street style blog, but with a bunch of cool girls you’ve probably seen before (Harley Viera Newton, etc.) all wearing limited edition Hermes scarves in different ways. Unfortunately, the scarves will only be available at Colette in Paris come September. {Nylon}

Will shape-ups really shape you up? According to the American Council on Exercise, “simply no evidence to support the claims that these shoes will help wearers exercise more intensely, burn more calories or improve muscle strength and tone.” Skechers disagrees. Have you tried them? Do they work? {Huffington Post}

A Letter to le Tour de France: A Podium Girl Make-Over Is In Order

Dear Tour de France Organizers,

First of all, we would like to congratulate Alberto Contador on winning this prestigious race. Truly an amazing achievement. It was an exciting competition this year, even though some of us may have been forced to watch against our will.

However, we would like to offer some sartorial suggestions for next year’s Tour. While we don’t really love the tight spandex worn by the riders, we completely understand the necessity and functionality of this garb. Our concern is not the cyclists.

Indeed, it is the so-called “podium girls,” or those who doll out the awards each evening. We understand that they are a long-standing Tour tradition. We will avoid NASCAR comparisons and let our colleagues over at Jezebel critique the inherent chauvinism.

The outfits that these women wear are absolutely unacceptable.

Wowsers! Hermès Sales Jump 23% in the First Half of 2010

The “Apple of the luxury goods industry” can really do no wrong.

Despite the fact that people still aren’t spending the way they were back in 2006–and might not ever–Hermès has seen sales jump 23% over the first half of 2010, thanks to a surge in the Asian market.

And the company believes that the second half of the year will exceed analyst expectations.

The reason behind Hermès’ steady success? Well, good products that never really date help. But so does a high operating margin.
