H&M

One of the reasons we’ve been so excited about this Marni for H&M collection, besides the fact that it’s Marni and we love Marni’s prints and quirky intellectual aesthetic, is that Sofia Coppola was involved and, well, we’ve always sort of had a girl crush on her. She was tapped to direct the commercial for H&M’s latest collab, out March 8, and we’ve got a first look at a behind-the-scenes reel from the shoot, plus the final product. Read more »

We’ve seen all the still shots from his H&M bodywear campaign, and word hit the streets a few weeks ago that a David Beckham for H&M commercial would be invading our TVs during the Super Bowl this Sunday. Could this be it? If so, what a lovely reprieve from watching grown men beat on each other. The guys have a few Adriana Lima commercials to drool over–this is infinitely better. Watch as David broods, flexes, and generally smolders. Oh, and there are some very strategic close-up shots of his, um, waistband too. (And lest you forget that he’s married, there’s also a wedding band shot.) Looking is fine, but no touching. Enjoy! Read more »

Victoria’s Secret Launches a High End Line: As much as we all love neon pink panties and sequined bras, Victoria’s Secret has launched a higher-end line of lingerie which we could see grown-ups wearing.

Amy Winehouse’s Family Not Thrilled with JPG Couture: Though critics enjoyed Jean Paul Gaultier’s tribute to the late singer, her dad said it was in “bad taste.” Will a public apology follow?

Scott Schuman and Garance Dore Talk Integrity: We’re talking about their blogs, people. Here’s how the couple navigates the fine line of maintaining editorial integrity and making money.

CFDA Releases 2012 Model Health Initiative: And they mean it this time. Diane von Furstenberg is getting serious about the 16 and up rule after last year’s hoopla over then-15-year-old model Hailey Clauson.

Who’s Who in the Brazilian Fashion Scene: Brazil is contributing more to the fashion industry than just banging hot models. Pencils out–it’s time to take some notes.

Get to Know Model Myla Dalbesio: New Ford plus size model and performance artist Dalbesio is someone you’re going to want to know. We interviewed the rising star.

First Look: Marni for H&M Campaign

Friday, Jan 27, 2012 / 9:00 AM

This has been a big week for collaboration and diffusion line reveals–Karl for Karl Lagerfeld just launched, Jason Wu for Target was feted last night, and we got a sneak peek at Doo.Ri for Macy’s this week, too. But don’t forget about H&M’s next big collaboration (and arguably the one we’re most excited about) with Marni. The collection launches March 8 and the Fashion Spot dug up this campaign image.

We have no confirmation on this, but TFS commenters theorize that it looks like Brit actress (and face of Chloé’s fragrance), Imogen Poots. Read more »

Despite the overwhelming buzz of the Versace for H&M collection, the fast fashion retailer is reporting a 15.3 percent dip in profits over a full-year period, according to WWD.

Karl-Johan Persson, H&M‘s chief executive, cited rising costs, the negative impact of currency fluctuations, and “a tough retail environment,” as reasons for the company’s decrease in profits this year. “The situation in the sourcing markets has also been challenging,” he said. “Cost inflation has been high resulting in increased purchasing costs for the fashion retail industry.”

Fast fashion retailers often get accused of stealing other designers’ work, but this case is a bit different. H&M is being accused of stealing an original design from the work of a East Atlanta-based artist, Tori LaConsay. Tori emailed Regretsy to point out that a sign she had painted in 2008 as a love letter to her “tight-knit” neighborhood was swiped by H&M and subsequently used on things like bath towels and door mats. The items in question were sold on the UK’s H&M site (see above), but we don’t see them there now, not surprisingly.

LaConsay wrote to complain to H&M and got he following response from a customer service rep: “We employ an independent team of over 100 designers. We can assure you that this design has not been influenced by your work and that no copyright has been infringed.” After that, she sent her tale to Regretsy and H&M has now responded to the controversy via social media. The US was shut out of today’s launch of the Versace for H&M cruise collection–it was only available online and H&M doesn’t have e-commerce here yet–but that doesn’t mean we’re not interested in how it all played out (or that we can’t shop it on eBay). And as has become the norm with these fast-fashion collaborations, there was drama.

First of all, H&M’s website apparently crashed, which also happened in the UK during the spring collection’s launch. H&M tweeted at about 6:30am EST: “We’re very sorry for the tech problems during today’s #VersaceforHM launch. We’re working on expanding capacity for more visitors.”

The “tech problems” appear to have affected some customers’ orders, too. One customer tweeted back: “@hm waited until 11. Put items in my bag only to b told their unavailable to then pay for! Not a happy bunny #VersaceforHM.” We’ve reached out to H&M for comment but haven’t heard back yet. UPDATE: H&M gave us the following statement:

We apologize to all the customers who experienced technical problems when trying to shop online. Due to the high volume of customers shopping the Versace Cruise collection our website was down for a few hours. We have been working hard to solve the technical problems that occurred to avoid that this will happen again in the future. We of course hope that as many customers as possible had the possibility to shop. This is a limited, one off collection which is supposed to sell out in a couple of days, but the interest from our customers highly exceeded anything we could have expected.

The collection has already mostly sold out, too. Read more »

Finally, a reason to look forward to the superbowl: H&M will be premiering the first TV commercial for their new David Beckham bodywear collection featuring none other than the beefcake-y (and hopefully half-naked) soccer star.

“We’re always looking for new ways to surprise and delight our customers, and we see this as a unique opportunity to reach millions of fans and H&M customers,” Steve Lubomski, Director of Marketing for H&M North America, said in a press release. “David Beckham is a true style icon and one of the most decorated soccer players of all time.”

Not sure about “style icon” but who cares? He’s hot. Read more »

I’m not sure if I’ve ever been this excited for an ad campaign for a collection before. Perhaps because it’s pretty unusual to promote an ad campaign before it’s even been released, but when Sofia Coppola is involved and it’s for a highly-anticipated H&M designer collaboration, we want all the details we can get.

So, WWD announced today that H&M’s upcoming collaboration with Marni will be promoted with a print ad as well as an advertising film that will run in cinemas, television and online–all of which were directed by Ms. Coppola. She shot the ad in gorgeous Marrakech, Morocco in October.
