How I’m Making It: Thomasine Dolan of Thom Dolan

Thom Dolan may be a little known up-and-coming label, but designer Thomasine Dolan is actually an industry vet with 20 years under her belt. After years and years of working for big names like Ralph Lauren, Armani and Banana Republic, Dolan decided she was finally ready to tell her own story. In 2010 she launched her label with a few retro swimsuits, which quickly grew into a complete range of classic, masculine-meets-feminine pieces in high quality fabrics.

The busy New Yorker balances being a mom of three with running her growing business, both of which she does from her Broome St. apartment. She invited me into her amazing home (her studio is the floor below), and it was easy to get sidetracked as we discussed everything from her love of The Sound of Music to her dismay over the Kardashian phenomenon. One thing is certain, if you haven’t heard of this designer, who is as honest and witty as her designs, it’s time to take note. Read on to learn more.

How I’m Making It: Jonathan Simkhai

Jonathan Simkhai’s love of fashion started long before he knew he wanted to be a designer. Between bonding with his mom in department stores and helping his girlfriends go shopping, Simkhai began to develop a discerning eye for style. The New York native worked in retail and buying throughout his college years at Parsons and FIT, and realized just how much he enjoyed dressing women and making them look and feel their best.

He chats with us about how he got started, that time Drew Barrymore wore one of his dresses, and his plans to design menswear.

How I’m Making It: Reece Solomon of Reece Hudson Handbags

As one half of design duo Reece Hudson (the other being her partner Max Stein), Reece Solomon knows how to get things done–and done well. Since graduating from Parsons just three years ago, Reece has turned her line of expertly crafted leather handbags into one to watch. And the industry has taken notice in a major way. Last summer, the CFDA chose Reece Hudson as one of latest recipients to occupy its Fashion Incubator Studios in NYC garment district, along with receiving free business consultations from NYU. We’ve been dying to know what’s happening for Reece now that she’s settling into life as a CFDA incubatee–as well as what’s next for Reece Hudson– so we grilled her on how she’s “making it” in fashion today.

What was the inspiration behind starting your own brand?
Since I was little I have always wanted to have my own brand, and I knew that it was something I wanted to start at a young age, not later in my career. Also, when I graduated Parsons in 2009, the economy was terrible and thus the job market. So I kind of felt that if I couldn’t find the job I wanted I might as well try to create it for myself.
