As Hurricane Sandy moves on and New Yorkers are left to clean up the city, the full extent of the damage is becoming increasingly clear. One particularly hard hit area, at least fiscally, was retail, both in the city and beyond as stores were forced to close their doors to brace for the storm. American Apparel Responds To Backlash Over Sandy Sale

Last night, before Hurricane Sandy hit and devastated the North East and Mid-Atlantic regions, American Apparel sent out an email blast to promote a special sale available to customers in states on Sandy’s path (Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland). “20% off everything for the next 36 hours” the sale touted, “in case you’re bored during the storm.”

Almost immediately, there was a small backlash on Twitter. We reached out to American Apparel for a response. Here’s what the retailer had to say:

How the Fashion Industry Prepped for Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is upon us–but the fashion industry isn’t letting this Frankenstorm bring them down.

We checked in with some of our favorite people in the industry–from The Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine to Kelly Cutrone to DKNY PR Girl Aliza Licht–to find out how they prepped for tonight’s storm. For an industry that’s supposed to shun carbs we are collectively loaded up on them–as well as candy, nail polish, and fashion mags to read by scented candle light.

Noted Fashion Photographer Nigel Barker Now Live Tweeting Hurricane Sandy Updates

As you’re no doubt aware, those of us on the east coast are locking our doors, boarding our windows and stocking up on non-perishables (cookies, bread, wine, the three hurricane food groups), in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy’s arrival.

Since we’re all hunkered down in our apartments, it’s hard to know exactly how the hurricane is progressing. Which is why we’re lucky to have Nigel Barker–fashion photographer, reality TV personality and now, fearless weather reporter–giving us live updates via Twitter and Instagram.
