Protests are not uncommon during fashion week. From designers’ use of animal fur to lack of racial diversity in models, activists have a number of reasons to take issue with the industry. The latest? Unpaid internships. And good old Occupy Wall Street will be demonstrating against them.
One of the best and easiest ways to break into the fashion industry is to pitch in during fashion week. Tons of companies–from top PR agencies, to designers, to modeling agencies–need lots of extra hands this time of year. They need people willing to put their heads down and work their asses off (not to party, OK?). Oftentimes, if you prove yourself to be an asset during the chaos of fashion week, that two-week internship becomes a semester-long internship–or better still, a full-time job. We know plenty of folks who got their start helping out during fashion week–so trust us: If you’re looking to get a foot in the door in the crazy world of fashion, this is an excellent way to do it.

If you’re still in college (lucky!), finding an internship can be infinitely easier; since most internships require an ability to receive school credit, the options are vast. Depending on your school, there will be a number of traditional resources available to you, such as job fairs, career resources centers, and alumni networks. These are the places you should check with first, as you may not have to go any further.
