Ari Seth Cohen Is Making an ‘Advanced Style’ Documentary… But He Needs Your Help To Make It Happen!

We don’t like to play favorites, but “Advanced Style” is hands-down one of our favorite style blogs. When it seems like street style has gotten somewhat contrived, when beautiful young 20-somethings are getting dressed just to be snapped and slapped online, thank goodness there’s Advanced Style to showcase the style and wisdom of ladies of a certain age who get dressed only for themselves.

“I started the blog to inspire people to look at aging in a new light,” says Ari Seth Cohen, the site’s founder. “I was best friends with my grandmother and have always had an affinity for older people. Before starting Advanced Style, I noticed a lack of inspiring and positive images of aging and I wanted to show that there are so many wonderful things that come with age.”

And now he’s trying to take his blog to the big screen as a documentary (it’s already been turned into a book). But he needs your help.

Tavi Gevinson and Iris Apfel Are Having a Conversation at the Met About ‘Good Taste/Bad Taste’

Each year the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts sit-down conversations with the fashion elite in celebration of the Costume Institute’s exhibit. Previous line-ups have drawn large crowds, and we’re expecting the same from this year’s presentation, which features a pretty unique combination of personalities (and accessories).

On Sunday June 17, New Yorker writer Judith Thurman–who wrote an incredible article about “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” and who also wrote the introduction to the book which accompanies the exhibit–will moderate a discussion between Iris Apfel and Tavi Gevinson. Called “Good Taste/Bad Taste: The Evolution of Contemporary Chic,” the museum couldn’t have picked two more appropriate ladies to hash out that topic. While both participants are well known for their fondness for layering, their seventy-four year age gap is sure to account for more than a few differences in opinion (or maybe not, since Tavi is such an old soul).

Iris Apfel Donated 900 Pieces of Her Wardrobe To a Museum in Salem, Massachusetts

Ever wondered how many things are in beloved New York fashion fixture Iris Apfel‘s wardrobe? The answer: A lot.

Apfel is donating 600 items from her personal wardrobe to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. The generous donation will include pieces ranging from Alexander McQueen and Lanvin, to vintage flea market baubles, all of which the 90-year-old has amassed over five decades, reports The Boston Globe. The combination of art objects, garments and accessories will surely include much of the OTT eyewear and jewelry the “world’s oldest teenager” (as she describes herself) is known for.

It isn’t the first time the white-haired icon has been immortalized.

Iris Apfel Launches Exotic Handbag Collection Called ‘Extinctions’

Everyone’s favorite fashionable nonagenarian just added yet another category to her growing fashion empire: handbags. The line will sell in department stores and, like its designer, it sounds…eccentric, to say the least. First of all, it’s called ‘Extinctions.’ Why? Apfel’s business partner, Lisa Nunziata told WWD, “When I met Iris, I told her I’m the Read more →

Marni at H&M Is Already Being Returned: The folks over at Madison Avenue Spy found a bevy of returned items from the Marni collaboration at their local H&M store. We wonder: with all the money to potentially be made from selling your unwanted Marni at H&M wares on eBay, why bother returning anything at all? {Madison Avenue Spy}

Is Azealia Banks Playing The Chanel Show in Japan? The rapper took to her beloved Twitter account to announce an upcoming gig with the label, apparently playing their Japan fashion show. The tweet has since been deleted, maybe because it was supposed to be a secret? Anyhoo, if you’re headed to the Chanel show in Japan, you might be treated to a live performance from Ms. Banks. {Fashin}

Jimmy Choo Designs ‘Iris’ Shoe: The folks over at Jimmy Choo have designed a woven leather sandal with a five-inch heel named after 90-year-old style icon Iris Apfel. While it must be a great honor to have a shoe named after you, we wonder which 90-year-old woman is still wearing five-inch heels? Wouldn’t flats have been a more appropriate choice? {Telegraph}

Iris Apfel on Aging Gracefully and People Thinking She’s ‘Cool’

As if we didn’t love, fawn over, respect, and want to be Iris Apfel enough already, her interview on Into the Gloss has us falling for the unstoppable nonagenarian hard. She invites Emily Weiss into her apartment (which features this awesome bathmat with a lion head) to talk beauty products (she doesn’t use much), plastic surgery (she’s against it), aging, her upcoming collection for MAC and her bemusement at being considered so ‘cool’ and ‘hot’ that Alexis Bittar’s PR girl got her likeness tattooed on her wrist.

These are words of wisdom people, so listen up:

This Makes Sense: Iris Apfel is Designing an Eyewear Collection

This Makes Sense: Iris Apfel is Designing an Eyewear Collection

You can’t hear the name Iris Apfel without conjuring up images of the 90-year-old style icon’s oversized eye glasses. Along with eclectic jewelry, they’ve become her signature. So, it should come as no surprise that after a slew of jewelry collaborations, Apfel has her sights set on designing an eyewear collection.

She’s collaborating with Eyebobs, a company known for its stylish reading glasses. Though an Iris Apfel-designed collection won’t bow until 2013, they’ve launched a limited edition frame inspired by her called, of course, the “Iris.” The thick-rimmed, oval-shaped frame is available in three colors starting in January and proceeds will benefit Lighthouse International, one of Apfel’s favorite charities, WWD is reporting.

Quotes of the Day: Jeggings Make Iris Apfel Want To Throw Up and Other Zingers from Her Interview with The Telegraph

“Now when I walk down Fifth Avenue in the summertime I just want to throw up. It seems that the fatter and uglier people are, the fewer clothes they wear. The shorts and flip-flops and tight jeans on butts that go from here to Poughkeepsie.” She shudders. “I always say they should put people in jail for wearing clothes like that. Especially stretch jeans over size 10–they should be outlawed. Ten years ago people were starting to look like slobs in New York, now it’s an epidemic.”

Iris Apfel’s Personal Jewelry Collection Goes on Sale Next Week: Take a Look at What She’s Selling

90-year-old style icon Iris Apfel (is there anyone else more deserving of the title?) is known for the more-is-more way in which she wears her famed accessories–giant necklaces layered over each other, bangles stacked up her arms, and then why not add a sparkly rhinestone broach? And don’t forget those signature oversize glasses.

So it made sense when Apfel made a foray into designing her own accessories–first with HSN last year, then a collaboration with Alexis Bittar, and most recently she’s collaborated with YOOX.com on a series of collections that will be available on October 24. There’s the main ready-to-wear collection which is comprised of chunky resin necklaces and bangles and priced reasonably from $45 to $525; the limited edition collection of high-end pieces that make liberal use of rhinestones at prices ranging from $1195 to $2800; and finally, there’s the personal collection which is comprised of actual pieces that Apfel herself has worn and loved over the years, which will retail for between $695 and $3500. When asked about selling her own jewelry, Apfel told W, “There comes a point when you need space, plus, I could use a few shekels.”
