The Golden Globes will air live Sunday evening, and, as always, we’re crossing our fingers for some memorable red carpet moments. So while Hollywood is busy putting the last finishing touches on their custom-made Oscar de la Rentas and Valentinos (even though they always claim they “just threw this on last minute,” don’t they?), we’ve put together a collection of some of the Golden Globes’ most memorable fashion moments in recent history. Because, in the end, it’s not really about what awards you’ve won – it’s what people are saying about your dress the next day.

January Jones Has a Bun in the Oven: Though we can’t say who the father is, we’re hoping the kid turns out something like Sally Draper. {The Frisky}

Designers Weigh In on Kate’s Dress:
Jason Wu thought it was stunning, Issaac Mizrahi, flattering, Prabal Gurung, appropriate, Lela Rose, didn’t like the lace and Valentino was reminded of Grace Kelly. {WWD subscription required}

Nicole Richie Has a Client at the Met Ball: Nicole Richie will be dressing top model Britt Maren for the Met Ball. We’re not sure what to do with this one just yet…but needless to say we’re excited to see if the former-reality-star can hack it. {Styleite}

Katy Perry’s Royal Manicure: The pop star tricked out her nails in honor of the royal wedding putting tiny pictures of Prince William on just about every nail (Kate nabbed one nail). {Racked}

Versace is launching a new line of eyewear for spring called January J. The name of the collection is a not so subtle nod to the inspiration behind the line: red carpet Versace devotee January Jones.

Mad Men fan Donatella Versace, who dubbed Jones her next “Versace blond,” worked ’50s and ’60s movie star glamor into the line, which she showcased on her spring runway. It comprises two styles of sunglasses and one style of optical frames. Apparently when you look at these glasses head on “an entire 3D Medusa head is visible, branding the January J collection unmistakably as coming from the house of Versace,” the press release states.

“This campaign is definitely a landmark in our relationship…and one that I hope will last a lifetime,” Jones said in the release.

Check out the collection.

Carey Mulligan has changed red carpet fashion.

I say this on the day after the Golden Globes not because she wowed me last night–she wasn’t even there. It’s because ever since Mulligan wore that Prada dress to last year’s Oscars, the red carpet has gotten a bit more interesting.

Of course there were risk takers before she the pulled it off: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, and Sofia Coppola have looked pulled together and cool over the past decade. But here’s why Carey’s different: She’s not cool. She’s pretty and smart and admirable, but she’s not particularly slick or hip. She’s made not wearing a nude, sparkly dress okay for non-hipsters. She’s even made it necessary.

Last night, there were more than ten dresses which I thought, even if they weren’t perfect, were good. And interesting. Usually, I’d say the number is more like three.

Best Dressed: Golden Globes Edition!

Monday, Jan 17, 2011 / 9:59 AM

Pastels and nudes seem to have been the palette of choice at this years’ Golden Globe Awards. Emma Stone looked perfect in her peach-colored Calvin Klein dress and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes, while Helena Bonham Carter looked crazy-good in Vivienne Westwood and different colored heels. A very pregnant Natalie Portman looked very stunning in a pink Victor & Rolf strapless gown and Leighton Meester, like always, looked amazing in a long-sleeve Burberry dress. Claire Danes also chose to wear Calvin Klein and Anne Hathaway looked beautiful in an Armani Prive gown.

Versace‘s spring/summer 2011 campaign starring January Jones is out, though the Mad Men star is wearing very little Versace in it.

Jones is naked save for a strategically placed bag and shoes in the first image of the campaign to be released. According to WWD, she doesn’t put on much more for the rest of the campaign, modeling only Versace accessories including shoes, bags, sunglasses and glasses.

Jones has been a fan of the brand for sometime, wearing Versace for big red carpet events, and this year she attended the label’s spring show (even if she did hold it up by almost an hour). Donatella Versace has reportedly described Jones as “deeply sensual” and told WWD that she is “always on the lookout for the next Versace blonde…and in January I feel I have found a perfect Versace woman for the 21st century.”

Lately, the cool thing, if you’re famous, is to claim that you don’t have a stylist. (Cough, Blake Lively, cough cough.) Sometimes, that’s true. But most of the time, chances are someone is likely helping the starlet make clothing decisions, even if it’s not a Rachel Zoe/Nicole Richie-type relationship.

There are some stylists who make celebrities look like they’ve done it themselves. Leslie Fremar, who styles Julianne Moore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jennifer Connelly, and several other perfect specimens, makes her clients feel so comfortable on the red carpet that for years I fully believed Gyllenhaal did it solo.

But alas, what celebrity has time to go it alone, especially when it’s a big event like the Oscars? As one publicist told me, “I don’t think they have time to find PR contacts, you know?”

Even Chloe Sevigny, whose style is innately her own–probably more than any other celebrity–uses a stylist for big events. Ezra Woods, her sometimes-stylist, also works with Michelle Williams, who looks as effortless on the street as she does on the red carpet. (And there’s no way Woods is picking out her outfits every morning.) Perfect person Gwyneth Paltrow even started using someone after her too loose Ralph Lauren dress at the 1999 Oscars. (Although I loved it regardless.)

So what about Blake? And Diane? And January? What’s truth and what’s fiction? Here are the real stories behind these stars without stylists:

Since Mad Men hit the air in 2007, it feels like half of the praise the show receives is about its stunning–and stunningly accurate–costumes.

And if you read our Mad Men Style Recaps, you know we’re big fans of the woman behind those wares, costume designer Janie Bryant. But while we’ve documented the on-air style of Mad Men‘s women quite regularly, we’ve been fairly quiet about what they wear off screen. Thus, in honor of last night’s season finale, we’ve tracked the evolution of their red carpet style.

MILAN–Versace’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection was set to a rock rendition of the famous Habanera aria from Bizet’s Carmen. Fitting, since, like Carmen, Versace’s girls were fiery vamps who looked ready to seduce or kick ass. Or do both at the same time. The models were styled severely: Their hair was slicked back tight until it glistened and their brows were defined to the point of looking angry. It was as if Donatella had assembled a fierce sexed-up army.

The uniform? Body-con mini dresses with cut outs galore (at the hips, shoulders and back) in white, then black leather, then red, then a multicolor striped print. There were knee-length pencil skirts too, paired with cropped fitted jackets. Versace’s signature Greek fret motif ran throughout the collection, blown up as cut outs on leather jackets and dresses, or shrunk down around skinny belts. The stand out looks were, unsurprisngly, the evening wear dresses at the finale–floor length numbers all in fringe that celeb attendee (and Versace-devotee) January Jones will no doubt be wearing on the red carpet soon.
