Fashionista’s Week in Review: Super Bowl Madness, Jason Wu for Target Snafus, and Fashion Week Prep

Anna Wintour Appears on 60 Minutes: Though it was footage from a 2009 interview, the candid interview definitely got us in the mood for fashion week.

Jason Wu for Target for eBay: By Monday morning, more than 11,000 Jason Wu for Target items were listed on eBay, and one couple was caught on video wiping out stock in Miami. Bet they aren’t too pleased that Target has since replenished.

We Spent a Week in Brad Goreski’s Shoes: And they were studded Christian Louboutins, natch. His secret? Diet Coke with a splash of Diet Dr. Pepper.

Eli Manning vs. Tom Brady:
Before Sunday’s game decided the on-field winner, Fashionista put the two head to head off the field.

Jason Wu for Target Is Back in Stock Online

On your marks, get set, GO: Jason Wu for Target is back in stock online! Happy Friday, everyone.

After all the drama–from site snafus to rabid reselling–the mass retailer has quietly restocked their online store with the whole collection, though a good portion of it is already sold out again.

While most fashion lovers will rejoice, no doubt the couple that bought out a Miami Downtown Target store’s full stock–that’s $7,000 worth–won’t be quite as pleased, as their plans to resell their items for astronomical prices are likely foiled.

Fashion News Roundup: South Park Characters Get Naked for Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang is Expanding in Asia, and a Model Chooses God Over Victoria’s Secret

Alexander Wang is Expanding Eastward: Alex Wang is breaking the typical fashion business expansion mould (West followed by Eastern markets) with plans to open fourteen locations in Asia in the next year. The designer, who has no plans yet to open any more US stores (he currently has only one in NYC) says he has seen “the progression” of fashion in China years after his mom tried to (lovingly) pressure him into moving there. Wang’s 4,000-sq-ft Beijing flagship store will open its doors next month. {WWD}

Are Adam Levine and Anne V. Dunzo? Rumor has it that genetically-blessed couple Adam and Anne have parted ways after two years of unwedded bliss. The Maroon 5 star was looking “really heartbroken” at a Super Bowl party. Hm. {NY Post}

South Park Strips Down for Marc Jacobs: Following in the nudie footsteps of Victoria Beckham and Naomi Campbell, the cast of South Park have stripped down for some Marc Jacobs tees benefitting The Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group at NYU. Thankfully, Muscle Man Marc’s former co-stars have some strategically placed lettering preserving their modesty on the $35 tees – which are really, really funny. {WWD}

Did Target Work Out Its Website Issues for the Jason Wu Collection? Not Really, According to Our Writer’s Firsthand Account

After the disaster that was Missoni for Target, one would assume that Target’s online team would have worked out all the kinks for the Jason Wu launch. Unfortunately for many who hoped to get their hands on a Jason Wu for Target piece, the experience was as frustrating as ever.

The first sign that perhaps things would not go well was the Target Style team’s response to the many inquiries about when exactly the collection would launch online:

Jason Wu for Target Fallout: 11,000 Items Currently on eBay and Two Re-Sellers Buy Out the Entire Collection in a Miami Target (We’ve Got Video)

Well, that was fast! Since going on sale at midnight on February 5, Jason Wu for Target has almost completely sold out–and over 11,000 items are already on eBay.

Though this time the online launch went a little smoother than Missoni for Target’s infamous site meltdown (but not without a few hiccups–read our first account later today), items still went lightening speed quick. We checked this morning and there is currently only one item still available online–this pleated blue top.

Brick-and-mortar didn’t fare much better, with most locations selling out of some items within minutes. But the worst story we’ve heard of yet is the midtown Miami store whose complete stock of the collection was bought by a couple with the intent to resell, as the video below, sent to us by a tipster, shows.

Jason Wu for Target Doesn’t Go On Sale Until Sunday But You Can Already Buy It on eBay

Are you so eager for a piece of Jason Wu’s Target collection that you’d buy it on eBay marked up over 250% before it even hit stores? If so, some sneaky fashion editors are ready to take advantage of you. It seems that some attendees of last week’s launch party and pre-shop event have already put their purchases up for sale on the online auction site.

The Most Influential French New Wave Films in Fashion

In an industry like fashion which is always looking for the next new look, we’ve noticed there’s at least one source of inspiration that gets revisited by designers time and time again–the French New Wave. Echoes of the film movement from the late 1950s and 60s are felt far beyond the reach of filmmaking, and fashion draws from its catalog of films endlessly. Most recently, Jason Wu cited the New Wave (or Nouvelle Vague) as inspiration for his spring collection for Target. He told the Today Show that he was inspired by the “mischievious” and “nonchalant” attitude of the films, and we think his descriptors hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately, the reference was lost on Ann Curry, who said she had never heard of New Wave until now. Well, consider this your tutorial, Curry!

The French New Wave is well-known for its bold style and experimental filming techniques, both visual and narrative. The movement was influenced by the Hollywood auteurs of the time (John Ford, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock) and Italian Neorealism, a film movement concerned with the plight of the working class. This realist approach to storytelling didn’t have much concern with fashion proper, and as a result many films from the French New Wave were the basic styles of the time. So what is the difference between being inspired by the films compared to being inspired by 60s fashion, and why are designers so crazy about it in the first place? As one can gather from Wu’s descriptions, it has a lot to do with intangibles. The influence from the New Wave on fashion arguably has as much to do with an overall attitude–the je ne sais quoi of the icons of the era–as it does with any of the actual clothes worn in the films. Jean Seberg’s New York Herald Tribune shirt and cropped slim black pants in Breathless (1960) weren’t groudbreaking, yet the look is still one of the most recognizable in film history. It’s not about what was worn in the films, but who wore it and how.

Finally: Jason Wu for Target, The Complete Collection

Finally, after being teased for the past week with one look here, another there, here it is: the entire Jason Wu for Target collection. So good, right? As we’ve gushed before, in a collab-happy fashion world it’s one of the few designer collaborations to come along in a while that we’re ready to shell out for. Why? Because this stuff might actually live in your closet longer than one season. It doesn’t scream “JASON WU FOR TARGET” and, having felt the clothes in person, the fabrics feel like they’ll hold up. Of course, we won’t be shelling out that much–nothing–not a striped dress or boxy bag–is over $49.99. We’re eyeing the floral sheer paneled top with matching floral skirt, the precious Peter Pan collared dresses and the cat scarf and tote (duh). What will you be lining up for?

Click through to see all the looks.
