Fashion News Roundup: The Beckhams Don’t Have a £10,000 Baby Monitor, Bravo Is Launching a Male Model Reality Show, and Jean Paul Gaultier Joins Cannes Jury

The Beckhams Don’t Have a Damien Hirst Baby Monitor: Victoria Beckham has fired back at the UK tabs, denying reports that little Harper Seven received a £10,000 baby monitor as a gift from artist Damien Hirst. How useful could a baby monitor submerged in formaldehyde really be, anyway? {Daily Mail}

Jean Paul Gaultier on Cannes Jury? With rumors floating around that JPG will join the jury at this year’s Cannes Film Fest, it sounds like fashion may feature heavily behind the scenes as well as on the red carpet. Last Night’s Party: Artist Liu Bolin Had To Massage Jean Paul Gaultier’s Leg While He Stood For His Harper’s Bazaar Portrait

Fashion and art collided head-on last night at the Eli Klein Fine Art gallery in Soho during the opening of Chinese artist Liu Bolin’s exhibition, “Lost in Art”, which included a high fashion collaboration (not of the H&M variety). For those of you who don’t subscribe to Harper’s Bazaar (disclosure: I do), the magazine collaborated with the contemporary artist to literally paint larger-than-life fashion designers Alber Elbaz, Angela Missoni, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino and Jean Paul Gaultier — who was on hand, working the crowd — into the background.

Liu is quite renowned in highbrow (and deep-pocketed — the large size of the pieces sell for $36,000 a pop) arty circles for his quiet but striking conceptual photos featuring himself painted into culturally and historically important locales in China. Harper’s Bazaar special projects director Laura Brown happened to have stumbled upon his work at a Stockholm gallery recently, whipped up this collaboration and skillfully made it work.

Fashion News Roundup: Gisele Feeds an Elephant, Cindy Crawford Models Bra Tops, and Alexander McQueen Relaunches Website

Gisele’s New Baby: No, the supermodel is not expecting again with hubby Tom Brady–not that we know of, anyway! The Brazilian stunner was snapped bottle feeding a baby elephant on a visit to an elephant orphanage during a recent trip to Kenya. Bündchen took to her Facebook page to rally fans’ support: “We need to speak up for these animals or they will continue to be in danger,” she posted. {People}

Fashion’s Fishbowl: Daphne Groeneveld covers April’s Vogue Korea, holding a fishbowl–an analogy for how the fashion world is running these days? It probably isn’t that deep, but we can’t wait to dive into this spread. (Puns!) {TFS}

McQueen’s Website Relaunches: Exciting news for Alexander McQueen fans (so, everyone). The brand has revamped its website, which includes a separate scarf “boutique” with exclusive colorways of the infamous skull scarf, and plans to feature the entire archive of videos and photos of all McQueen runway shows. The website will combine the main line with secondary line McQ so now it’s possible to shop both in one place; in addition, the digital flagship has extended e-commerce to cover the EU. A “My McQueen” feature allows users to save their favorite images from the runway and advertisement as well as product, making for one awesome wish list experience. {Fashionista Inbox}

Hermes Spring 2011: Au Revoir, Jean Paul

PARIS–Yesterday, Jean Paul Gaultier galloped away from Hermès in style. After seven years of loyal services, he announced last May that he was leaving. And last night, the whole fashion sphere gathered in the industrial space of La Halle Freyssinet to watch his final bow.

The Spring 2011 collection accurately reflected the essence of the Gaultier-Hermès collaboration: bondage meets horseback riding, provocation meets tradition–and, as always, admirable tailoring, JP style

XXL: How BBW Became Fashion’s Latest Prey
Commentary

XXL: How BBW Became Fashion’s Latest Prey

Fashionista contributor Long Nguyen is the co-founder/style director of Flaunt.

“Life in the Fat Lane,” the third chapter of media studies professor Laura Kipnis’ 1996 book Bound and Gagged, juxtaposed the dilemma of fat fetish pornography and how popular culture confront the issue of fat and desire. On one hand, obese porn, a niche in the vast porn business, is an absolute revolt against the dictatorial and incessant aesthetic of thinness. On the other, the images of these chubby women–often 44-35-44–entice desires that contradict and challenge prevailing cultural norms.

Yet over the past decade, the fat porn market has grown tremendously as acceptance of full size women becomes the norm. At least in the porn industry. Once a province of cheap production titles, big studios have been producing lavish titles with more budgets. The advance of web technology has allowed better quality for those choosing to self-published. Even the nomenclature has changed–the category is now called BBW or Big Beautiful Women. Hardly anyone ever mentions “fat porn” in an age where the “deviant” bodies of April Flores, Karla Lane, Kelly Shibari and Bonnie de la Cruz–some of the industry’s stars–are becoming household names.
