Everything Met Ball, Orthodox Jewish Women Get Fashionable, and Fashion Insiders Share Their Moms’ Best Beauty Tips

The Met Ball Goes (Mostly) Punk: The hair, the makeup, the gowns, and the juicy gossip—we had this year’s Met Gala covered. (Including how Godmother of Punk, Vivienne Westwood, got snubbed.) The large crowd means there were lots of opportunities for photobombs on the red carpet. Finally, we voted for our best dressed and rated how “punk” the looks were. We even gathered all the best Instagrams and Vines of the night.

And Then Kame Kim Kardashian: The reality TV star arrived on the Met Ball red carpet in a custom floral Givenchy dress designed by Riccardo Tisci that received, um, mixed reviews. Even Robin Williams (aka Mrs.Doubtfire) weighed in, with perhaps the best tweet of the day. Tisci came to the defense of Kim and his dress, but that wasn’t enough to stop her getting unceremoniously cropped out of Vogue‘s Met Gala best-dressed slideshow.

Beauty Tips We Learned from Our Moms
Fashion Insiders Tell All

Beauty Tips We Learned from Our Moms

To celebrate Mother’s Day (which is this Sunday, so don’t forget to call your mom!), we’ve asked tons of people in the fashion and beauty industries for the most memorable beauty tip their moms ever gave them. Our moms are our first teachers after all. While we got some traditional mom-isms like, “Always wash your face!” we got plenty of unique bits of wisdom, too. (There are also a disproportionate amount of women who learned to worship at the altar of Clinique’s Three-Step System thanks to their moms.)

Click through to see what Jerry Hall, Georgia May Jagger, Pat Cleveland, Doutzen Kroes, Aerin Lauder and tons more learned from their moms.

Fashion News Roundup: Jerry Hall and Georgia May Jagger for H&M, Rachel Zoe Banned Jennifer Garner from Wearing Maternity, and Kanye West Wears a Skirt

Georgia May Jagger and Jerry Hall for H&M: No Sears family portraits for this lot! Here’s Jerry Hall and her equally gorgeous daughter Georgia May Jagger posing in H&M’s new campaign. Wonder if they got any matted and framed? Or on a key chain. {HuffPo}

Jaeger Designing Uniforms For Will and Kate’s Home: The beloved British heritage brand will be designing the new uniforms for the royal couple’s front of house team at Kensington Palace. Guess that means I’ll have to find someone else to design mine…. {Telegraph}

Rachel Zoe Won’t Let Jennifer Garner Wear Maternity: The super stylist has apparently banned Jen from wearing maternity clothes to events, but with four more months to go, Garner says it’s going to have to happen “sooner or later.” Or she could just go the Jamie Lynn Spears route and wear really huge t-shirts. {InStyle}

Happy 30th, MTV! To Celebrate, the 30 Most Memorable Model/Musician Couples

We’re sure that when cavemen banged out rhythms on old animal skulls, all the most gorgeous cave girls immediately came running. While musicians have never had a hard time picking up women, it’s safe to say MTV made it easier for them. The era of the model/musician relationship bloomed during the MTV era–models and musicians were frequently thrown together during video shoots, which was a job that hadn’t existed for models before.

MTV just turned 30, and to honor the music channel which helped to give musicians faces and personalities, here’s our roundup of the 30 best (and strangest) model/musician pairings through the years.

Our 20 Favorite Images from the Self Service Online Archives

Yesterday, Self Service, the hit French fashion magazine with an insider tilt, relaunched its website with full archives. The goal was to create a database of everyone that’s ever been in Self Service. It’s like an online encyclopedia filled with people who are really, really important in the fashion industry. (Seriously, there’s an index.)

Now you know I love a good online archive, so I spent yesterday afternoon scouring Self Service‘s to bring you the most iconic, weirdest, and captivating photos from the book’s 16 year history. While my computer’s hard drive is now 25% covered in images of Hannelore Knuts, I’ve managed to pull out 20 photos that are particularly noteworthy.

But don’t rely on me entirely. After checking out my edit, go to Self Service’s new site and find out for yourself.

The Top Ten Most Stylish Mother and Daughter Pairs; My Mom the Style Icon Weighs In

Ever come across an old photo of your mom–you know, a photo from before you even existed–and thought, “Damn, my mom looks good” and then “OMG I want that whole outfit”?

Piper Weiss did, so she started a blog called My Mom the Style Icon where she posts photos of stylish moms that date from the 1920s through the 1980s, tells the stories of the moms in the photos, and offers up hilarious commentary on their outfits. That blog is now a book, and last night Coach threw a party to celebrate its release–just in time for mother’s day. (Seriously, buy it now for your mom).

True to her mom-style obsession, Weiss, who by day is an editor at Yahoo! Shine (you should read her stuff there because it’s hilarious), wore a vintage Pierre Cardin dress that was her mom’s in the 70s that she gave what she calls a “a shoulder pad-ectomy” and had shortened. Mama Weiss, the inspiration for the book, was there too, looking stylish as ever.

There are exceptions to every rule, but it seems style is more often than not passed down from mothers to child. So we brainstormed with Weiss to come up with the ten of the most fashionable mother and daughter pairs (and one mother-son pair), and she offered her two cents on each stylish duo. What other stylish mother daughter pairs did we leave off?

Quote of the Day

“Nudity is always terrifying, even now. And yes, I have to admit I’ve been trying to eat less. I’ve been doing yoga classes with some girls in Richmond and eating lots of salads. The nudity scene is brilliantly comic – I was roaring with laughter when I saw it – but I’m worried about whether Read more →

Jerry Hall: Back to Ford

Ford Models just re-signed Jerry Hall. The woman’s been modeling for thirty-seven years but it sounds like it took her recent turn for Chanel to get Ford, her old agency, to pay attention. Karl Lagerfeld put her front and center for his Cherie inspired Spring accessories catalog and she landed a Self Service editorial, too. Read more →
