Jessica Stam

Jessica Stam is the new face of the CoverGirl LipPerfection print ads, and a few weeks ago we got to sit at a spring trend mini-seminar with makeup guru Pat McGrath and Stam. McGrath is fresh off her first-ever movie gig, helping to transform Rooney Mara into Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And now she’s prepping to do the makeup looks for 24 fashion shows in New York and Milan, but we got to catch up with her before the madness starts.

CoverGirl is releasing some videos highlighting their new spring beauty launches which feature McGrath giving some how-tos, with Jessica Stam as muse. Fashionista has the second such video exclusively today, and we also had the opportunity to ask McGrath all our pressing lipstick application questions. Check out Stam’s transformation below, and also get answers to such complicated issues as: When should you use a lip brush?

Dont judge a book by its cover… Unless it’s a magazine, in which case, sometimes the cover is the deciding factor of whether or not to buy the mag altogether.

The best covers of 2011 returned to a new naturalism and a fun aesthetic, like the Lara Stone T cover we’re still drooling over, pictured at left. Sure, there’s still room for artifice in fashion (see: Stella Tennant on Vogue Italia), but 2011 was a year for reflecting on natural beauties, incredible models, and stellar photography.

After toiling over hundred of covers, we’re bringing you “The Best” according to us. Did we forget your favorite? Let us know in the comments.

Jessica Stam for Covergirl

Considering that Pat McGrath is the originator of a lot of runway makeup trends, you definitely sit up and listen when she decides to talk about those trends. (She was responsible for the looks at Givenchy, Prada, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and Balenciaga this past season, to name just a few.) On Friday afternoon, CoverGirl held an event featuring Pat McGrath (CoverGirl’s Global Creative Design Director) and the brand’s new face, model Jessica Stam, who was perfection in a lace dress and a full-on face of glamorous makeup. The purpose of the gathering? To discuss the beauty trends from the recent spring 2012 runways and how mere mortals can recreate these looks and make them work for real life.

Here are ten tips we picked up, from Pat’s secret for perfect brows, to how to do a metallic lip:

Marilyn Monroe Exhibit Draws Classy Fash Crowd: No angel-wing-and-thong ensembles here. A collection of rare photos of the ill-fated starlet titled Picturing Marilyn opened last night at Milk Gallery to a stylish group including Coco Rocha, Jessica Stam, and Georgina Chapman. Dree Hemingway had the honor of wearing a stunning Dior-created replica of the black dress worn my Ms. Monroe in her “Last Sitting” photographs. {WWD}

Armani Opens New Hotel, Wishes He Were an Architect: Giorgio Armani, who has just opened his newest luxury hotel in Milan and has plans for several others in Paris, New York, and London, says that he wishes he could “have a fresh start as an architect.” If only the 77-year-old had the eternal youth of fellow Italian Roberto Cavalli, he’d still have at least 43 years to make that dream a reality. {Telegraph}

Pop Stars Go Waaay Old School in Classic Paintings: Ever wondered what Beyonce would look like in Queen Elizabeth’s clothes? Or daydreamed about Justin Bieber in blue velvet 18th Century pantaloons? No? Neither had we. But now that you’re curious, here they are, in some pretty convincing re-imagined classic paintings. {MTV Style}

Last night, we stopped by Macy’s Herald Square to celebrate the launch of Giambattista Valli for Macy’s, the latest in the department store’s string of high-profile designer collaborations. Yes, the ultra-feminine, cocktail dress-filled collection is now available to buy in stores and online.

The launch event in Macy’s Impulse section was quite a scene. It began with a brief speech from Macy’s President and CEO Terry Lundgren followed by a photo op with Giambattista himself, flanked by Giambattista for Macy’s-clad models Jessica Stam, Chanel Iman and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem. All of this was surrounded by curious cluster of Macy’s shoppers wondering what was going on.

It’s been a big year for Giambattista, having launched this Macy’s collab as well as his first ever couture collection within a few months of each other.

Here’s the deal: You may have seen the 22-page portfolio Steven Meisel shot for W‘s September 2011 issue. The editorial features black and white “before” and “after” shots of big-name models like Raquel Zimmermann, Jessica Stam, Karen Elson and Carolyn Murphy. The story was a big get for the mag, considering Meisel had never worked with W before. Thing is, Meisel produced a strikingly similar editorial for Vogue Italia‘s August issue.

WWD noticed the nearly identical spreads, and has it from a source that Meisel may have financed the Italian Vogue shoot on W’s dime. Neither W nor Steven Meisel has commented on the issue, however a fallout–or at least a fault line–is bound to happen soon.

Who’s the latest It Girl everyone in fashion is talking about? Irene! No, she’s not a gorgeous, 5’11 supermodel from the Ukraine, she’s the hurricane that’s been slowly making her way up the east coast. While Irene wrecked serious havoc in North Carolina, NYC was lucky enough to miss the brunt of her force. And, fashion people being fashion people, they had a lot to say about it. Check out our top ten Irene-related fashion tweets from this weekend.

Stores in over 250 cities across the US and overseas are scheduled to participate in the Vogue-helmed retail fest, and this year over 200 e-tailers will join in on the fun so those not living in or near a participating city can throw down plastic and score some deals too.

(And we mean that literally–the site allows you to “add events” to your “night out” and plots them on a map.)

We scoured the listings for all the most important information: which celebrities have signed on and what they’ll be doing, the craziest gimmicks, and where all your favorite designers will be so you can stalk them show them some love.

Good News For The American Garment Industry: A weak dollar may be bad for travellers, but it’s great for exporting. U.S. brands are moving manufacturing back stateside and both L.A. and New York have seen an increase in apparel manufacturing jobs–800 new jobs in July alone. {WWD}

Dov Charney Is Being Creepy, Again: American Apparel now sells this shirt reading “Teenagers Do It Better,” which goes really nicely with Charney’s multiple sexual harrassment charges (some of which were from actual teenagers). The shirt is a collab with teen mag Electric Youth, also famous for featuring young models in various states of undress. {Styleite}

We’re sure that when cavemen banged out rhythms on old animal skulls, all the most gorgeous cave girls immediately came running. While musicians have never had a hard time picking up women, it’s safe to say MTV made it easier for them. The era of the model/musician relationship bloomed during the MTV era–models and musicians were frequently thrown together during video shoots, which was a job that hadn’t existed for models before.

MTV just turned 30, and to honor the music channel which helped to give musicians faces and personalities, here’s our roundup of the 30 best (and strangest) model/musician pairings through the years.

Makeup tutorials have become a bit of an internet phenomenon. YouTube is flooded with how-to guides on everything from getting the perfect cat eye to emulating the look of [insert famous person here]. And despite the fact that most of them are done amateur-style, uploaded by non-professionals with nothing but a mirror and a MacBook, they are ridiculously popular.

Apparently CoverGirl wants in on the phenomenon–they’ve tapped legendary makeup artist (and CoverGirl Global Creative Design Director) Pat McGrath and ultimate makeup canvas Jessica Stam to shoot “major how-to videos.” A shoot took place yesterday, as did a @COVERGIRL / @Jess_Stam / @patmcgrathreal Twitter love fest, which is where the above behind-the-scenes photograph came from. Also, there were some indications that this collaboration will extend beyond just how-to videos.

While just modeling seems to be professionally fulfilling enough for some, others like to take on side projects, or maybe they’re just trying to come up with a back up plan for when they become too old to model. Jessica Stam, despite being one of the most sought after and successful models out there, is one who likes to keep herself busy.

She’s gone the design route, which wasn’t too surprising–collaborating with both Rachel Roy and Rag & Bone on capsule collections. And now she’s writing a column for Huffington Post Canada–not something we would have necessarily predicted. Perhaps the Ontario-bred model was inspired by fellow Canadian Coco Rocha’s turn at broadcast journalism with hosting gigs for MTV Canada and ET Canada.
