Trendspotting: Shine On

Vinyl, PVC, and latex clothing usually send one’s mind straight to the gutter. Or to a vision of a catsuit. It’s certainly not versatility, wearability, or comfort. I know it’s not just me.

However, fall/winter 2013 is putting a spin on these preconceptions, with plenty of bright, shiny, and kinky nuggets.

Jonathan Saunders Fall 2012: Equestrian Lady
Reviews

Jonathan Saunders Fall 2012: Equestrian Lady

LONDON–Jonathan Saunders was this year’s winner of the Vogue/British Fashion Council Designer Fashion Fund Award, which means he won £200,000 and very high level mentorship from the BFC. If there was a Fashion People’s Choice award, Saunders is the clear winner of that, too, based on the pastel, spring Jonathan Saunders outfits that a big chunk of the room was wearing at his show last evening.

Since I’m handing out awards, Saunders’ show wins “Highest Elevation” award, too, because it was held in a room 19 stories above London, with one wall made entirely of glass. Because of the glass wall, all the seating was on one side of the room, and it made one of the longest catwalks I’ve seen this week. The sleek glass and the setting sun were the perfect backdrop for Saunders’ collection.

Christopher Kane Wins the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund

Christopher Kane is the this year’s winner of the British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. Along with a £200,000 (or $320,000) check, Kane and his sister/business partner Tammy will receive “director level mentors across the industry.”

The beloved Scottish designer’s biggest challenge was to present a business plan to a panel of judges, including British Vogue editor Alexander Schulman and Joan Burstein from Browns. (His competition included E. Tautz, Nicholas Kirkwood, Osman Yousefzada, Charlotte Olympia, Jonathan Saunders, and Peter Pilotto.)

Fashion News Roundup: British Fashion Fund Finalists Announced, Kate Middleton’s Blue Issa Dress Gets the AIC Treatment, and Tina Turner is Hot

Meanwhile, Across the Pond: The British Fashion Council and British Vogue announced their Fashion Fund finalists yesterday. Congrats to Christopher Kane, E. Tautz, Nicholas Kirkwood, Osman Yousefzada, Charlotte Olympia, Jonathan Saunders, and Peter Pilotto. {Vogue UK}

Royal Knock-Offs: Kate Middleton’s engagement ring isn’t the only thing being replicated by stores looking to make a quick buck. Tesco, which is kind of like the Wal-Mart of the UK (but with more food), created a $25 version of her now-famous blue Issa dress. Shame. {NY Times}

Kate Moss: Art Dealer? Moss is reportedly selling portraits of herself at Art Basel in Miami next week. {Telegraph UK}

Jonathan Saunders and Costello Tagliapietra Design Tees for Toy Story 3

Jonathan Saunders and Costello Tagliapietra Design Tees for Toy Story 3

If your first thought when you saw this headline was “huh?” don’t worry, it was our first reaction, too.

But it’s true: Disney has gone designer. Jonathan Saunders, Costello Tagliapietra, Victor Glemaud, Henry Holland, and Cassette Playa have each designed a tee based on a Toy Story 3 character in advance of the film’s release tomorrow.

It’s high brow fashion for a low brow flick. But if these (awesome) tees can help some fashion darlings reach Disney’s mass market, more power to them. The tops are $70-$108 at RevolveClothing.com.

So are you a Buzz, Rex, or Woody?

Fashion Week

London Bound

Fashion Month suffered from serious shake ups last season. For Spring 2010 Burberry went from Milan to London, Giles went from London to Paris, Pringle of Scotland took the same route as Burberry, Matthew Williamson, who’s always been kind of confused, was back in London after stints in New York and everyone involved in any Read more →

Double, Double Toil & Trouble: This mini-profile of Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld starts with his “toiling” away in Hollywood two years ago and ends with his excessively expensive (and lucrative) Nicholas Pol opening last month. Trendspotting: Lemon Zest

Overall, New York Fashion Week kept to a very neutral palette, but when color was needed designers went straight for neon yellows and lime greens to brighten their quiet visions of spring. We spotted it at Jonathan Saunders, Brian Reyes and Marc by Marc, of course. But Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi of Preen, Yigal Read more →

People We Like

Graeme Black — Great Scot!

It amazes us that Scottish designer Graeme Black isn’t more widely known. After all, he was senior designer at Armani for years (not to mention the great Giorgio’s boyfriend for much of that time), and before that Creative Director of Ferragamo. He launched his luxe, very tailored, eponymous label a few years ago. Victoria Beckham’s Read more →
