Altuzarra CEO Karis Durmer’s Unconventional Path to the Top of the Fashion Heap

Karis Durmer always knew she wanted a career in fashion. But it took a stint in finance (Bear Stearns), a stop-off at Columbia Business School, and experiences in publishing (Martha Stewart and Conde Nast) and startups (Make Meaning) to get there.

Today, Durmer is the ceo of Altuzarra, the maker of powerfully sexy clothes for women. (Not girls, women. Carine Roitfeld is a champion and muse and the team tells me that Helen Mirren is a “dream client.”) Durmer, who sits at a desk off to the side of company’s SoHo showroom and design studio, might have been an unlikely candidate for the gig in September 2011, when founder Joseph Altuzarra brought her on as his business partner. His mother, Karen Altuzarra, was his first ceo and is now chairman of the company.

Durmer was introduced to Altuzarra by a mutual friend at Proenza Schouler, where she was working for a brief time. While that certainly sounds like a convenient connection, it wasn’t always that easy.

Altuzarra Fall 2013: Rich Girl

If you’re an animal rights activist and especially if you are PETA, read no further and do NOT click through the gallery.

Joseph Altuzarra luxuriated in leather and fur for his fall 2013 collection–a massive black and white intarsia fox fur coat elicited ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from the crowd. Cruella de Vil would have loved it.

From Best Dressed to Best Ass, We Present Our Fashion Prom Met Ball Superlatives

Last night’s Costume Institute Gala may have been filled almost exclusively with famous rich people in formalwear, but we think they all brought something special to the table. While awards shows like the Oscars tend to elicit a stream of boring, predictable people and ensembles, the Met Ball brings out unexpected pairings, bold gowns and Read more →

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Names Its Finalists

Ten American designers just got a lot happier. The CFDA and Vogue announced their ten finalists for the seventh annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund initiative, and we’re pretty pleased with the results (as we’re sure they are as well). Though the process is far from being over–the winner and two runners-up will be announced on November 15–having the list in our hands is enough to make us sit on the edge of our seats. The finalists are as follows:

CFDA Awards: Who Won, Who Didn’t and Who Made My Day

Tonight at the CFDA Awards, actor Anthony Mackie said that the event really is like the Oscars of fashion. As one of the few people in the crowd who has attended both ceremonies, he should know.

And it did seem like an abbreviated, less-hokey Academy Awards.

There were skits–Diddy starred in a short that introduced the menswear nominees–celebrity presenters–Isabella Rossellini, Jessica Biel–and even some heartfelt speeches.

Stay-tuned tomorrow for our round-up of the evening’s best-dressed. And now, the winners:

Dana Lorenz, Prabal Gurung, Joseph Altuzarra and Simon Spurr Celebrate Swarovski

We’re not huge on sparkles, but when talents like menswear great Simon Spurr, Fenton/Fallon jewelry master Dana Lorenz and It-designers Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra create with crystals, we take notice.

This morning’s breakfast at Swarovski’s Creative Service Center–which is kind of like a candy store for designers who love crystals instead of kids who love sweets–celebrated the new shine-heavy capsule collection created by the foursome, along with Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, Eddie Borgo, Richard Chai and Patrick Ervell. Each designer, natch, is nominated for the CFDA’s Swarovski Award in his or her respective category.

Alex Wang, Marc Jacobs, Up for Big CFDAs

Nadja Swarovski and Diane von Furstenburg announced the 2010 CFDA nominees at Diane’s studio last night. Diane called Nadja the “godmother” of fashion, and when Nadja suggested that title belongs to Diane, Diane countered, “No! I’m the grandmother!” And she did sound maternal, correcting Nadja’s mispronounced designer names. After reading the nominees, Stephen Kolb took Read more →
