How do you measure influence?

Is it through website hits? Or sales? Through ad dollars? Or the number of mass retailers who’ve knocked off your work?

The answer is all of the above and none of the above. Influence is an intangible thing that just happens when you know your craft and you work hard at it.

To determine who belongs in the Fashionista 50–our list of the most influential people working in New York fashion–we used our own knowledge of the industry, combined with advice from industry sources. We also considered each candidate’s consumer reach–through sales, media, etc.

To be considered, candidates had to live and work in New York for most of the year.

What’s Fashionista’s definition of influential? It describes people who are shaping the direction of the New York fashion industry, both aesthetically and in terms of how the business works.

You’ll find the entire Fashionista 50 list after the jump. Click on the person’s name to read a full bio. And if you really want to click through the whole slideshow, you can do so here.

There has been much speculation about who would fill Julie Gilhart‘s shoes as the next fashion director of Barneys New York. Lane Crawford’s Sarah Rutson and Vogue‘s Virginia Smith were both rumored to be up for the job, but chose not to leave their respective places of employment.

The newest name at the top of the short list? According to WWD, it’s Marie Claire accessories editor Taylor Tomasi Hill.

It’s an interesting choice on the part of newish Barneys New York CEO Mark Lee.

If Simon Doonan is the face of Barneys New York, then Julie Gilhart has been its voice. But that’s all about to change, as Gilhart is leaving the company, along with Judy Collinson, executive vice president and general merchandise manager of womenswear, WWD reports.

Collinson will be replaced by Daniella Vitale, a Gucci vet and former colleague of newish Barneys CEO Mark Lee. Vitale will serve as chief merchant and executive vice president, overseeing all of women’s and Barneys.com operations.

It might be sad, but it’s not exactly a surprise the Collinson and Gilhart are out.

The new Fashion’s Night Out website launched today and it’s pretty impressive. You can browse and search every New York event listing and even create your own itinerary.

You can also narrow the 51 pages of listings down by neighborhood, category (men, women, beauty) and/or specialty (block party, celebrity, food). But if you’re looking for, say, ten or so events that are most likely worth checking out, look no further. We reviewed each and every page to bring you the ten FNO events we’re most looking forward to.

Barneys is throwing a bash, and everyone’s invited. Designers like Shipley & Halmost and Phillip Lim don’t usually have trunk shows at stores like Barneys, but Julie Gilhart gets that her customers—even the ones who shop at CoOp—want to make sure they get their hands on their runway loves before they sell out. So she [...]

Fashion, perhaps more than any other industry, has been branded with the word “exclusive,” but this month the industry appears to be doing everything in its power to be anything but. Almost every major label–or at least the most anticipated–is livestreaming their show via Nick Knight’s Showstudio or their own personal websites. Alexander Wang’s show [...]

All of Fashionista has been looking forward to The Blonds’ show since our invites showed up. We expected rhinestones, corsets, wild prints, and an awesome experience. We were right on all counts. The show opened with one of The Blonds stomping down the runway in a gorilla suit, tearing it off, and working it up [...]

Last night I attended a panel at Pratt Institute featuring Barneys’ fashion director Julie Gilhart, Slow & Steady Wins the Race designer Mary Ping and Uluru designer Caroline Priebe. They talked about sustainable design, but it wasn’t your typical marketing spiel. Indeed, these three women are passionate about design with a conscious. But their cause [...]

The end of the holidays signals the start of Fashion Week, or at least a slow descent into its proper mindset. To kick it off, Ecco Domani’s announced their Fall 2010 awards.
