5 Really Simple Ways You Can Make Fashion More Sustainable

This morning, we went to the home of fancy editors, Condé Nast, where Vogue and H&M hosted a panel discussion on the future of sustainability in the fashion industry.

Even though I left the discussion feeling a little like I was being blamed for something, I also left with some good tips on how I can take this whole sustainability thing into my own hands. Some of them seem pretty obvious–but they’re rarely followed. Read on to find them out.

Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

How do you measure influence?

Is it through website hits? Or sales? Through ad dollars? Or the number of mass retailers who’ve knocked off your work?

The answer is all of the above and none of the above. Influence is an intangible thing that just happens when you know your craft and you work hard at it.

To determine who belongs in the Fashionista 50–our list of the most influential people working in New York fashion–we used our own knowledge of the industry, combined with advice from industry sources. We also considered each candidate’s consumer reach–through sales, media, etc.

To be considered, candidates had to live and work in New York for most of the year.

What’s Fashionista’s definition of influential? It describes people who are shaping the direction of the New York fashion industry, both aesthetically and in terms of how the business works.

You’ll find the entire Fashionista 50 list after the jump. Click on the person’s name to read a full bio. And if you really want to click through the whole slideshow, you can do so here.

Rumor: Taylor Tomasi Hill To Replace Julie Gilhart As Barneys Fashion Director

There has been much speculation about who would fill Julie Gilhart‘s shoes as the next fashion director of Barneys New York. Lane Crawford’s Sarah Rutson and Vogue‘s Virginia Smith were both rumored to be up for the job, but chose not to leave their respective places of employment.

The newest name at the top of the short list? According to WWD, it’s Marie Claire accessories editor Taylor Tomasi Hill.

It’s an interesting choice on the part of newish Barneys New York CEO Mark Lee.

Julie Gilhart Out at Barneys
The Business

Julie Gilhart Out at Barneys

If Simon Doonan is the face of Barneys New York, then Julie Gilhart has been its voice. But that’s all about to change, as Gilhart is leaving the company, along with Judy Collinson, executive vice president and general merchandise manager of womenswear, WWD reports.

Collinson will be replaced by Daniella Vitale, a Gucci vet and former colleague of newish Barneys CEO Mark Lee. Vitale will serve as chief merchant and executive vice president, overseeing all of women’s and Barneys.com operations.

It might be sad, but it’s not exactly a surprise the Collinson and Gilhart are out.

Fashion Shows

Is Fashion’s Inclusivity Kick Working?

Fashion, perhaps more than any other industry, has been branded with the word “exclusive,” but this month the industry appears to be doing everything in its power to be anything but. Almost every major label–or at least the most anticipated–is livestreaming their show via Nick Knight’s Showstudio or their own personal websites. Alexander Wang’s show Read more →

People Are Talking

Sustainable Design Shouldn’t Be an Option, It Should Be a Given

Last night I attended a panel at Pratt Institute featuring Barneys’ fashion director Julie Gilhart, Slow & Steady Wins the Race designer Mary Ping and Uluru designer Caroline Priebe. They talked about sustainable design, but it wasn’t your typical marketing spiel. Indeed, these three women are passionate about design with a conscious. But their cause Read more →
