Marni and H&M’s Charity Tee Will Benefit Japan: We’ll have to wait another two months to shop the hotly anticipated H&M/Marni collaboration, but here’s a peek at a charity tee that’ll be included in the collection. Twenty-five percent of the hand-drawn t-shirt’s proceeds will benefit the Red Cross in Japan, which is still struggling to cope with the aftermath of last year’s massively destructive tsunami. Why build to a dramatic finish when you can open with a bang? At least that seemed to be Oscar de la Renta‘s philosophy when he presented his spring 2012 collection yesterday at a gritty unfinished space on W. 42nd St.–a move from the Upper East Side Park Ave. location where he’s been showing for years. Models burst out onto the runway in silk taffeta ball gowns in marigold, emerald and tomato that billowed down the longest runway I’ve ever seen to a soundtrack of, get this, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Really.
There were still plenty of embroidered and crocheted cocktail day appropriate for de la Renta’s core ladies-who-lunch clientele, but with the new show space and bad ass rock soundtrack the designer seemed to be turning over a new leaf with renewed energy. If you needed more proof that there was a new Oscar in town this season, look no further than the youthful star-studded front row. While de la Renta’s front row is usually stacked with his posh friends and buyers, this season Justin Timberlake was there (we overheard him exchanging pleasantries and tennis with Anna Wintour), a few seats down from him was Ashley Olsen (she and JT were both wearing black suits), and across from Ashley was New York fashion week’s unexpected new star, Nicki Minaj (she wasn’t wearing pants and had on a tiger hat complete with ears). The tanned glory that is Valentino Garavani was also there, a few chairs down from Barbara Walters.
But back to the clothes.
Vanity Fair has just released a preview of the 72nd installment of their famous annual International Best-Dressed List.
As usual, it’s a mixed bag of royals, financiers, socialites and entertainers. Yes, Kate Middleton, whose style we’ve been tracking since her royal engagement, makes her debut on the prestigious list as the Duchess of Cambridge (she’s listed as the wife of the future King of England). However, this isn’t her first time on the list–her inaugural appearance was in 2008.
There are a few other repeats–Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (no surprise there), Carey Mulligan (whom we love), Lady Gaga, who many people didn’t agree with last year, and Michelle Obama, who makes her fifth consecutive appearance–this time with President Obama as a best dressed couple. Another one of our faves, Tilda Swinton, made a well-deserved return to the list after a three-year hiatus. Musician and Lagerfeld muse Janelle Monae is an exciting newcomer and refreshing addition to list, which tends to disregard younger, edgier people.
As for the men, actor Colin Firth and actor/fashion designer Justin Timberlake make their debuts on the list. Firth’s role in A Single Man couldn’t have hurt his chances and it’s good to know that wearing a tragic denim suit to an awards show early in your career is something you can bounce back from. This October, Russian beauty Sasha Pivovarova will be boldly going where many models have gone before–Hollywood. A blink-and-you-miss-it appearance in the new trailer for In Time confirms Sasha has, at the very least, a cameo in the futuristic sci-fi thriller which also stars Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and other recent model-turned-actors, Alex Pettyfer and Yaya DaCosta.
The story is Logan’s Run meets Children of Men, chronicling a world where time is the new currency and everyone ceases aging at 25. Come to think of it, a model would probably have a lot to draw on in order to act in a film like this.
Sasha’s character actually has a name (it’s Clara) which is always a good sign for any upcoming actress.

LOS ANGELES-Saturday night Justin Timberlake and Trace Ayala, the boys behind the clothing line William Rast, launched their limited edition line for Target with a special shopping event. And it was some party. Guests entering the industrial space in downtown Los Angeles were instantly transported into the William Rast for Target world of rebellious biker culture. The brand’s campaign video, set in some remote country landscape, was projected high up on the walls, and carpeted lounge-like shopping areas throughout the warehouse lent the event a bohemian, laid back vibe. Even the dressing rooms, seemingly made from wooden shipping crates, complemented the rough and tough aesthetic of the brand. (Super creative idea; unfortunately it was also claustrophobia-inducing.)
Lucky party-goers got to beat the Target crowds and shop the Western-inspired collection alongside celebs like Rachel Bilson, Anna Faris, and Malin Akerman. (As well as that dude from Gossip Girl and The Social Network.) In between bites of mac and cheese and mini ice cream sandwiches, we also spotted Joy Bryant, Minka Kelly, and Chord Overstreet of Glee checking out the goods.
As cool as the party was, the night’s real stand-out was the super affordable and entirely-wearable collection, with pieces ranging from $16.99 to $199.99.
