Burberry Spring Summer 2012 Womenswear Show - Front Row And Backstage

Just about every time Topshop CEO Sir Philip Green is in the same room as a famous person, he or she is suddenly rumored to be getting a Topshop line. In just the past year, it’s happened with John Galliano, Gwyneth Paltrow, Florence Welch–none of whom actually went on to design anything. So we’re naturally a bit skeptical about this latest report that rapper-turned-designer Kanye West, who has been preparing for his next Paris Fashion Week outing in London, is in talks with Green to create a Topshop range of his own.

Remember how Kanye West took to Twitter yesterday to clarify that @DWbyKanye, the handle for his fashion line, was fake? Turns out he was just getting warmed up.

Between the hours of 11 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. (or between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. in London, where Kanye was tweeting from–giving more credence to the rumor that he has moved there to work on his fashion line), Kanye tweeted over 70 times. I wanted to go to sleep because I had an early meeting the next day but I couldn’t because the tweets were hypnotic and unfiltered and absurdly grandiose and philosophical and crazy–which is to say, I couldn’t look away.

It’s hard to say what any of it was really about. He tweeted about designing a school with Spike Jonze and mentioned something about how we need more people like Steve Jobs and McQueen and then something about the Jetsons (?). His epic ramble mostly seemed to be his way of introducing some new all-encompassing best-on-the-planet design company called DONDA, a name he’s really really psyched about.

But before DONDA there was a mini biography of his experience in fashion. Here’s what we learned (this is in chronological order):

A few days ago we reported that Kanye West (or someone) was tweeting from the handle @DWbykanye for his fashion line. Well, it turns out it’s a fake account. Kanye took to his real Twitter account to thank us for his support and to clear a few things up (which unfortunately did not include whether or not he’s moving to London):

We haven’t heard much about Kanye’s fashion label, DW, since his poorly-received first collection debuted this fall. But it appears that the rapper with design ambitions is going to actually try to get the label off the ground. The Sun reports that Kanye threw a party for his label in London the week before Christmas and let drop a few nuggets of information.

A “source” told the UK tabloid that while chatting with guests at a party he said that “he is now based in [London] and would return in early January.”

Music—especially the men and women who make it—has served as inspiration in the fashion world for decades, and this year we felt it more than ever.

Everywhere we turned, musical muses were popping up in the front rows of runway shows (in some cases, even on the runway), as well as on magazine covers month after month. The fascination fashion has with music must go both ways, because artists have recently stepped up their style game in their music videos as well, wearing pieces from the world’s most prestigious fashion houses and custom couture creations that would make even the most snobbish of editors drool.

The 2011 crop of music videos featured everything from ’90s supermodels to rampant fashion photography references, and we’ve picked the 15 videos that we believe really stood out in the style department. Which one did you watch on repeat?

We’ll cut right to the chase: A lot of crazy shit happened in the fashion world this year. While the industry that we call home can sometimes seem isolated and fantastical, many of its key players and events made headlines even in the mainstream media over the course of 2011.

In the last 365 days, we’ve seen our share of ups and downs: There have been exciting new beginnings and tragic falls from grace. A royal wedding and a Sarah Burton for McQueen dress captivated the world, while Galliano’s dress for Kate Moss made the fashion world swoon. We’ve celebrated the return of older models—like when 46-year-old Kristen McMenamy wore a bikini on the cover of Vogue Italia—and saw plenty of controversy surrounding very young ones. Just when we thought the boundaries of gender identity were breaking for good and that Lea T could kiss Kate Moss on the cover of LOVE, a men’s mag openly calls androgynous model Andrej Pejic a “thing.” We took it all in stride, and we’ve hopefully come out better on the other side.

Looking back at 2011, we’ve chosen twenty major moments that we believe defined the year in fashion. Which one made the biggest impact on you?

The backstage of fashion shows are usually a hot hectic mess. But not Victoria’s Secret. When you have the budget to put on a $12 runway show, backstage is pretty swank. As in, there was a carving station. And models actually eat from it.

The models wear very short pink silk robes while extensions and hair spray and bronzer and shimmering make up is applied in heaps. But they’re all smiles throughout. These girls are having fun. Our street style photog Ashley was there to capture the magic that is Victoria’s Secret backstage. Highlights included Kanye making an appearance and chatting with Alessandra Ambrosio, and Adriana Lima posing for an impromptu lingerie shoot on top of a table.

Check it out.
