Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About the Bejeweled Codpiece Tom Cruise Wears in Rock of Ages

Tom Cruise’s latest turn as ’80s musician Stacee Jaxx in the just released Rock of Ages really required the actor to play outside of his usual good guy/hero schtick. Jaxx is a tattooed, womanizing, drug-addled rock god who–are you ready for the best part?–wears a codpiece.

And not just any old codpiece either. Rock stars can’t just purchase their codpieces in Provincetown like everyone else, now can they? No. They can’t. This codpiece was custom made by ‘script-specific prop’-maker Doug Wright. The actual ‘piece,’ which sounds more like a Damien Hirst piece than codpiece, is a devil’s skull, bedazzled with rhinestones, metal studs, silver leaf, and a ruby-rhinestone encrusted tongue. All mounted on a leather jockstrap. Sexy.

This week was all about innate style–these ladies just know how to dress. Shala Monroque continued her red carpet streak in Jason Wu, while Katie Holmes wore her own design from Holmes & Yang‘s stunning spring collection. Rihanna looked sophisticated in a bone-colored Max Azria suit, and Lauren Santo Domingo stepped out to dinner at The Lion with Versace in one of the label’s colorful offerings. Katie Holmes and Jeanne Yang Mill Silk in New Jersey and Want You To Leave Your Spanx in the Drawer

Katie Holmes and Jeanne Yang Mill Silk in New Jersey and Want You To Leave Your Spanx in the Drawer

This may be geeky, but one of my dreams as a fashion writer has been to observe a designer walking a department store sales staff through his or her collection. The great ones all do this–Michael Kors is legendary for it–but because it happens before the store opens, it’s not something that onlookers often witness.

But yesterday my luck turned. I watched Katie Holmes and Jeanne Yang explain their collection to a small group of tenured Barneys New York staff. “If you have questions about the garments, email us,” Yang told them. “We want feedback from the customers.” This quick statement conveyed that Holmes & Yang is serious business–definitely not a silly side project from an actress and her stylist.

Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylists: The Complete List

Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylists: The Complete List

We’ve become huge fans of the Hollywood Reporter over the last few months, mostly due to Janice Min’s excellent makeover of the trade publication. Staffer Merle Ginsberg navigates the LA fashion scene with an entertaining mix of gossip, insider news, and general knowledge that is not only rare for the West Coast, but rare for fashion writing in general.

So we were thrilled to see Ginsberg’s list of the 25 most powerful stylists in Hollywood covering this week’s issue. Rachel Zoe obviously ranks number one, with names like Nicole Chavez, Annabel Tollman, Brad Goreski, Leslie Fremar, and Kate Young rounding it out. See the full list below, and read the Zoe cover story here.

Fashion News Roundup: Pilati’s Not Leaving YSL, Katie Holmes At MaxMara in Milan, and Chanel and Colette Open a Pop-Up Shop

Pilati Isn’t Going Anywhere: YSL confirmed via Twitter today that the rumor that this would be Stefano Pilati’s last season at YSL is just that–a rumor. “From YSL HQ in Paris… Pilati busy working on the next collection. All the rumors unfounded – he is here to stay,” the tweet read. Rumors always come from somewhere, and this one’s been floating around for a while. But we’ve got to believe YSL, and hope Pilati blows us out of the water with his fall collection next week. {@Y_S_L}

A Celebrity Trend We Can Get Behind: Madewell All Over

As writers whose homework includes reading high fashion glossies, it’s occasionally fun to peek inside something less sophisticated, like a weekly rag, just to see who is cheating on/lying to/zoomin’ whom. But when it comes to the trend report at the back of the book, we typically don’t find much inspiration.

Yet now and again, a celebrity gets a style right. In this circumstance, it’s not a particular trend, but a brand. And it’s not just one celebrity, but a few.

Everyone from Jessica Alba to Katie Holmes to Naomi Watts to Rachel Bilson has been wearing Madewell as of late, and we understand why.
