Kelly Cutrone is Casting Her New MTV Show; Here’s Who She’s Looking For

We knew that Kelly Cutrone, who has become the beloved Dr. Phil-esque lifestyle guru of the fashion world (as well as an actual correspondent for Dr. Phil), was working a new show but didn’t know much about it.

A casting notice reveals that Cutrone’s new show for MTV will be more like an extension of her role on Dr. Phil than a Kell on Earth redux. Cutrone’s new show will see the PR legend and best-selling author help folks reach their dreams. “Kelly Cutrone…is here to push you to achieve your goals,” reads the casting notice, “She’s been there, and has the know-how to kick your dreams into gear.”

And she’s looking for some dreamers to kick into gear, Cutrone-style, which will probably mean lots of blunt, no-nonsense but loving advice. If you’re 18-23 here’s here’s what you need to know (non-fashion dreamers are welcome to apply, too):

Kelly Cutrone Has Signed On To Be a Dr. Phil Correspondent

Come on, we all knew this was coming. Just not that it was coming via Dr. Phil.

Kelly Cutrone, aka @peoplesrev, aka author of If You Have to Cry Go Outside, aka star of Kell on Earth (RIP), has just signed on to be correspondent on Dr. Phil’s talk show. This has been confirmed via Cutrone’s Twitter account as well as Dr. Phil’s Twitter account.

We’ve never watched Dr. Phil because his mustache scares us. He kind of reminds us of Patrick Swayze’s character in Donny Darko, minus the whole child pornography thing. But we’ll be DVRing every episode on which the public relations maven appears. Heck, if Kelly can get behind Dr. Phil, maybe we can, too.

Hell Freezing Over: We never thought Alexander McQueen would be a defendant in a copyright law suit, especially against the Hells Angels. Yes, the motorcycle gang is suing Mcqueen’s brand along with Saks Fifth Avenue and Zappos.com, for selling Hells Angels-inspired McQueen items. The items in question: the “Hells Four-Finger Ring” and the “Hells Angels Jacquard Box Dress.” {Racked NY}

Whitney Port Confirms That The City is Over

It looks like we knew about The City‘s demise long before star Whitney Port did.

Racked reports the actress/designer admitted this morning on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show that “it doesn’t really look like we’re doing it anymore.”

We’re disappointed for the show’s fans, although we’re sure they’ll find solace in Lauren Conrad‘s MTV reality show, which documents the making of her clothing empire.

Fashion News Roundup: Billy’s Big Win, Crystal Renn on the Today Show and Mrs. Obama Honors Rodarte

We Heart Billy Reid: It’s been a few months since Billy Reid was named GQ‘s Best Menswear Designer of the Year, but we insist you check out this video GQ just posted. It gives a behind-the-scenes look at the exclusive presentation of each designer’s collection to the judges. Watch ’til the end when Billy is presented with the grand prize. He’s so happy and even starts to tear up! It’s too cute. {GQ.com}

Crystal Renn’s Today Show Confessions: The fashion world has been in a tizzy over (fomerly?) plus size model Crystal Renn’s apparent weight loss. The model went on the Today Show to dispel and explain. She says those Fashion for Passion photos were retouched to make her look like a size two, that she has been doing a new exercise routine, and that she’s been in recovery from anorexia for seven years. {The Cut}

Kelly Cutrone’s Books Need Their Own Section: Yes, Kelly Cutrone is working on a second book, tentatively titled Yes I Said That. But she doesn’t want this book to end up where her last one did–in the self-help section. “My idea is that there should be a section called ‘Journey’ and when my book comes out in May, I want it to be in [this] new section.” {People Style Watch}

Ten Questions for The City
Entertainment

Ten Questions for The City

1. When Erin and Olivia are meeting with Joe Zee, why can’t Olivia get up and walk two steps to grab a notebook from Joe? We’re glad she refused to move so we could witness a deliciously frosty transaction between Olivia and Erin in which Olivia points at Erin and asks her to fetch the notebook for her in a tone we can only imagine she reserves for wait staff and her cleaning lady.

2. Foreshadowing much? How many times did Kelly Cutrone say “very” as in it would be a “very bad thing” if Roxy doesn’t get Whitney’s line on some random Canadian pop star? 15. We counted.

3. Jian, who produces Canadian pop sensation Lights, is, according to Kelly Cutrone, the “Ryan Seacrest of Canada.” What does that even mean?

4. Why does Prabal Gurung have such a soothing voice? We could listen to him say things like “burnt plastic pallettes” and “laser cut organza” all day in his elegant Nepalese accent.

Fashion PRs Are Still Feeling the Recession

Fashion PRs Are Still Feeling the Recession

The recession is over! The recession is over!

Retailers and fashion labels may be shouting this comforting phrase from the hills, but there is an area of the fashion industry still struggling to regain momentum: public relations.

Kelly Cutrone, for instance, has been extremely open regarding the hit her company took during the recession. It was even a subplot on her reality television show Kell on Earth.

More recently, we witnessed the April 30 closure of Press Office Ltd., which repped brands including Karen Walker (now with Bradbury Lewis), Agnes B., Dunderdon, and Lover.

One industry professional explained to us that, while business isn’t necessarily down, rates are. The dollar figure clients are offering for monthly retainers, one-off events, and other services has literally halved in many circumstances. Which means PRs are working the same amount for a lot less money.

Dear Kelly Cutrone, You’re My Idol

I am not ashamed to admit that I’m a huge Kelly Cutrone fan. At Britt’s recommendation I read her book, which I loved, and Mondays are much harder to get through now that I don’t have Kell On Earth to look forward to. (Even though we still get to see her lay the smackdown on Roxy and Olivia every now and again on The City).

So when I heard that the PR maven herself would give a free lecture on Wednesday afternoon, I knew that I had to attend, since she never fails to provide me with an overwhelming surge of girl power.

Required Reading for People Who Work in Fashion, Want to Work in Fashion, or Simply Love Fashion

As a writer, I spend a good amount of my life reading other people’s words. And most of those words are about fashion.

So in the spirit of sharing, I’ve put together a recommended reading list for those who work in, want to work in, or simply love, fashion. In addition to my own thoughts, I’ve conulted Fashionista’s contributors, sources and friends. This list is by no means comprehensive, but these books have taught me a lot about the industry’s past–as well as it’s future.
