The Best Magazine Covers of 2011

Dont judge a book by its cover… Unless it’s a magazine, in which case, sometimes the cover is the deciding factor of whether or not to buy the mag altogether.

The best covers of 2011 returned to a new naturalism and a fun aesthetic, like the Lara Stone T cover we’re still drooling over, pictured at left. Sure, there’s still room for artifice in fashion (see: Stella Tennant on Vogue Italia), but 2011 was a year for reflecting on natural beauties, incredible models, and stellar photography.

After toiling over hundred of covers, we’re bringing you “The Best” according to us. Did we forget your favorite? Let us know in the comments.

Alexa Chung Beats Out Kate Middleton for the British Style Award (Plus the Full List of Winners from the British Fashion Awards)

The results from the British Fashion Awards are in and while there are a lot of familiar names in the winners’ circle, there are some surprises, too. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen won for Designer of the Year (deservedly so). Alexa Chung took home the British Style award, which normally wouldn’t be so shocking–except this year she was up against Kate Middleton *gasp*. The Model category, made up of industry vets and a relative newcover, was a bit of a wild card. Stella Tennant, looking amazing in a skinny tuxedo, beat out Georgia May Jagger and Kristen McMenamy. Victoria Beckham, now a bona fide fashion designer, had some stiff competition with Burberry, Stella McCartney and Tom Ford for Designer Brand, but she won. Quite an achievement for a former pleather-wearing Spice Girl. Click through for a full list of winners:

Katie Grand, Sarah Burton, Tom Ford Among British Fashion Award Nominees

Katie Grand, Sarah Burton, Tom Ford Among British Fashion Award Nominees

The British Fashion Council has just announced the nominees for the 2011 British Fashion Awards, which are essentially the U.K.’s answer to our prestigious CFDA’s. The ceremony, which is scheduled for November 28, is meant to recognize the most influential people in fashion today and also promote the growth of British fashion.

With all the attention the U.K. has been getting lately for that stylish princess of theirs and being dubbed the “new fashion capital,” British fashion is definitely more relevant than ever this year. That may be why the BFC has decided to re-introduce the Red Carpet award, which “gives recognition to a British designer who is creating global awareness of their designs in the media.”

From Kim Jones to Stella McCartney to Erdem, here are all the nominees:

All Eight Covers Revealed: Kristen, Mariacarla, Nyasha and Daphne Cry for LOVE

To say we love LOVE is an understatement. We’re kinda obsessed.

Watching the covers for issue six trickle in was half the fun, so we’re a bit sad all eight LOVE covers have been revealed. All total we’ve got Elle Fanning, Chloe Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld, Lara Stone, Kristen McMenamy, Mariacarla Boscono, Nyasha Matonhodze and Daphne Groeneveld all crying, sans makeup, on the covers of the coveted fashion book. So now the question is: which one is our favorite? Which one is yours?

The model covers and accompanying editorial is shot by Mert and Marcus, and styled by Katie Grand and Panos Yiapanis.

Take a look.

All of LOVE’s Issue Six Covers Revealed

The LOVE buzz just won’t stop! Elle Fanning and Chloe Moretz’s covers debuted on models.com this week, which has only fueled the LOVE speculation: who else would cover the beloved fashion book? While we guessed that Hailee Steinfeld would be next (Elle+Chloe+Hailee is kind of a thing), we were certain we’d have to wait until Friday to find out.

But no! Fashion’s favorite man about town Derek Blasberg convinced Katie Grand to spill the beans last night at dinner. Lucky for us, Derek couldn’t keep the news to himself, so he Tweeted it around 9pm last night. Thanks D!

According to Derek’s Tweets the models for the other five unreleased LOVE covers are:

More Fall Campaigns: Naomi Campbell Growls for Givenchy and Raquel Zimmermann for YSL

The fall campaigns keep rolling in today, the latest of which feature some very big names. The first image from Givenchy’s Fall Women’s campaign surfaced on Style.com. It was shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and stars Naomi Campbell. If it looks like she’s making a slightly frightening scowl, that’s because the campaign (and the collection) is feline-inspired. Things get even crazier in the behind-the-scenes video of the shoot which features Naomi, Natalia Vodianova, Kristen McMenamy, and Mariacarla Boscono posing on ornate pillows with their best growl faces. Unfortunately, we can’t hear if the models are actually saying “grr,” but that’s probably a good thing.

Azzadine Alaia Was Called To Take Over For Galliano: He was flattered but declined (he is in his 70s, after all). However, as the Financial Times observes, given Alaia’s rejection of the industry’s hyper-speed and the accompanying pressures, this may indicate that Dior is looking to change its ways. {Financial Times}

CreatetheGroup Aquires Morpheus Media: The digital media companies, which develop strategy, creative content and marketing on new media platforms, will now operate under the same umbrella. Clients include Burberry and Marc Jacobs (considered fashion’s digital pioneers), Net-a-porter, Louis Vuitton and others. {WWD}

A Woman Went A Month Without Looking In A Mirror: The Daily Mail’s Marrianne Power decided to test studies that show women are their own harshest critics by going a full month without using or looking in a mirror. Blake Lively Sits Front Row! Kristen McMenamy Walks in a Swimsuit at 42! And More Highlights from Chanel Resort

Karl Lagerfeld presented his 73-look resort collection for Chanel yesterday in Cannes. All his starlet muses were there including Blake Lively, who was eagerly snapping photos of the show with her iPhone (just like us!) and gushed to WWD, “My gosh, I think I’m going to move here!” Lagerfeld’s Magnum ice cream girl Rachel Bilson, Clemence Poesy, and Alexa Chung were also among the 200 attendees.

The runway was packed with top models–including vets like Stella Tennant and Kristen McMenamy, who walked the runway in a high-cut bathing suit (and gave every girl motivation to look that good at 42).

The 15 Most Buzzed About Models of 2010

I don’t like to do a lot of end of year reflecting about anything, except maybe all the shoes I wish I had bought but didn’t (a girl can dream, right?), but 2010 has seen some major model mayhem.

2010 saw more diversity in the typically cookie-cutter world of modeling. Was it perfect? Of course not, but the modeling industry may be taking much needed steps into the right direction. The top models of 2010 came in all body types, genders, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations, proving that there’s a lot more to being a successful model than a symmetrical face and a size zero frame.

Click though to see our list of the models that made made it big in 2010.
