Proenza Schouler Fall 2011: New York Energy

Proenza Schouler Fall 2011: New York Energy

A lady sitting near me at Proenza Schouler–you know this lady, she’s very important in fashion circles–said nonchallantly to her acquaintance, “There are only two New York shows that I’m really ever that excited about: Proenza Schouler and Rodarte.” Her friend quietly agreed. While we’re not that jaded, there is something about both labels, designed by young twenty-somethings of the same sex–one pair happens to be sisters, the other, friends–that makes their runways more significant than really anything else happening at New York Fashion Week.

Of course, there’s the cool factor–tonight Jen Brill, Terry Richardson, Liv Tyler, and Chloe Sevigny were all front row–but it’s also about talent.

Proenza Schouler Talks Tech at the IFB Conference; Tommy Hilfiger Talks Up the Garment Center at Parsons’ Innovation Panel

In the midst of this week’s shows there are some truly interesting conversations going on at Milk Studios. I’ve been fortunate enough to sit in on two of them.

Thursday night, it was the Proenza Schouler talk at the IFB conference. Design duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez sat down with the Business of Fashion‘s Imran Amed to discuss The Web. (As in bloggers, e-commerce, and viral campaigns.)

Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

How do you measure influence?

Is it through website hits? Or sales? Through ad dollars? Or the number of mass retailers who’ve knocked off your work?

The answer is all of the above and none of the above. Influence is an intangible thing that just happens when you know your craft and you work hard at it.

To determine who belongs in the Fashionista 50–our list of the most influential people working in New York fashion–we used our own knowledge of the industry, combined with advice from industry sources. We also considered each candidate’s consumer reach–through sales, media, etc.

To be considered, candidates had to live and work in New York for most of the year.

What’s Fashionista’s definition of influential? It describes people who are shaping the direction of the New York fashion industry, both aesthetically and in terms of how the business works.

You’ll find the entire Fashionista 50 list after the jump. Click on the person’s name to read a full bio. And if you really want to click through the whole slideshow, you can do so here.

The Proenza Schouler Boys are Giving the Keynote Speech at IFB’s Fashion Week Blogger Conference

The Proenza Schouler Boys are Giving the Keynote Speech at IFB’s Fashion Week Blogger Conference

Five years ago, who would have thought someone could make a viable and profitable career out of…well…fashion blogging? It’s safe to say that a certain set of bloggers (ahem, Susie Bubble and Bryanboy) have proven the naysayers wrong.

During Fashion Week, Independent Fashion Bloggers is hosting a seriously major conference at Milk studios in NYC (February 10-11, 2011) that any budding blogger should attend.

The two day conference will be packed with panels, workshops, and a party, plus you’ll score a fabulous gift bag. You’ll also learn about digital marketing, monetizing your blog, the evolution of the industry, and more from blogosphere and online media names like Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine, Face Hunter’s Yvan Rodic, Fashionista alum Faran Krentcil of Nylon, and Tumblr fashion director Rich Tong. The best part? Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are giving the keynote speech.

Check Out Kristen Stewart’s Vogue Shoot, Outtakes Included

Kristen Stewart‘s Vogue cover leaked last week and now the official cover story, plus photos from her spread, shot by Mario Testino, are up on Vogue.com.

Vogue‘s cover girls are often made to look too “Vogue”–too sleek and plastic and photoshopped but Stewart looks every bit the angst-ridden 20-year-old we know and love on February’s cover. She looks beautiful, and a little miserable. Which is kind of how she looks on every red carpet.

Stewart’s Vogue fittingly seizes on her love for Proenza Schouler.

Mayor Bloomberg Talks Fashion’s Night Out While Anna Wintour, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Other CFDA Members Stand There

After living here for a while, you sometimes forget how many amazing people live and work in New York City. When we walked into City Hall for the Fashion’s Night Out kick-off press conference today, we went through security with Lisa Mayock from Vena Cava.

Then, we saw Anna Wintour walking ahead of us and Alex Wang suddenly appeared behind us. A few minutes later Marc Jacobs, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez walked in. After we were seated inside the press conference room, the following people (in addition to the aforementioned) surrounded the podium: Prabal Gurung, Zac Posen, Phillip Lim, Tracy Reese, Kenneth Cole, Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Thakoon Panichgul, Marcus Wainwright from Rag & Bone, Francisco Costa, Vera Wang, Tory Burch, Steven Kolb, Linda Fargo, the Mayor…and after a few moments, we noticed tiny Mary-Kate Olsen peeking her head out behind Marc.

Then, unfortunately, we died and are thus unable to report anything else about Fashion’s Night Out.

Just kidding – sort of.

Buy, Buy, Baby

Like the Grateful Dead, Darling

Shop Talk at MAC & Milk

Yesterday afternoon MAC’s John Demsey and Milk’s Mazdack Rassi hosted a panel discussion for Parsons and FIT students in the studio that was the site of so many shows this past week. First, let us just say kudos to the two. MAC & Milk was a huge success in my opinion. It was such a Read more →
