Show Notes: Costello Tagliapietra Spring 2013

The Clothes: Costello Tagliapietra’s two specialties–their easy, flattering dresses, and their air-dye techniques–were definitely the focus at their Spring 2013 show. Gorgeous, air-dyed frocks in mottled corals, blues, and greens, with ruching in strategic places–at the waist and lower back–created evening-appropriate looks that yes, looked good on the size 0 models, but would be equally Read more →

Last Night’s Party: Karl Lagerfeld Pops Up in the West Village With Hilary Rhoda and Leigh Lezark

Last night, Karl Lagerfeld extended his empire even further with a launch party for his new range of T-shirts in collaboration with artist collective I Love Dust, which was held, appropriately, in a Karl pop-up shop in the West Village. And though Lagerfeld wasn’t physically there, there was plenty of his likeness to go around

There were Lagerfeld dolls, teddy bears, shoes, jackets, and special-edition Diet Coke, sprinkled alongside the new shirts, which are emblazoned with his most memorable quotes and images of his signature style pieces.

The scene was a remarkable testament to the power of the Kaiser’s ever expanding personal brand.

Cartier Relaunches Its Juste Un Clou Collection with a Model-Filled Bash

In honor of the relaunch of its Juste Un Clou collection, and coinciding New York City in the ’70s exhibit, Cartier decided to throw a little celebration. And by little, we mean really, really big. In fact, the only thing little about the entire evening was the endless array of passed hors d’oeuvres which, lucky for us, were never quite out of arm’s reach. There were tiny wild boar thingies, little poached quail eggs, baby banana Nutella crepes, microscopic filet mignon, shrunken lobster pastries… must stop/mouth watering. Moving on…

Juste Un Clou (which literally translates to ‘Just a Nail’) is a collection of rings and bracelets that are exactly that- the finest of fine jewelry (many loaded with diamonds, of course) molded into the shape of gracefully bent hardware that range in price from $2,175 to a whopping $34,650.

Lady Gaga Fetes the Opening of Her Workshop at Barneys In Custom Chanel

Last night Lady Gaga was on hand in NYC to cut the ribbon of her highly anticipated Gaga’s Workshop at Barneys. Sadly, we missed Gaga’s giant-scissors-wielding entrance, but she clearly owned that custom-designed-by-Karl-Lagerfeld Chanel hoop-skirted ball gown. After a quick sweep through the crowd (and a kiss for a lucky Bryanboy, who was wearing an Read more →

Giambattista Valli Celebrates Macy’s Line, Says It Was ‘Identical’ to Designing Couture

Giambattista Valli Celebrates Macy’s Line, Says It Was ‘Identical’ to Designing Couture

Last night, we stopped by Macy’s Herald Square to celebrate the launch of Giambattista Valli for Macy’s, the latest in the department store’s string of high-profile designer collaborations. Yes, the ultra-feminine, cocktail dress-filled collection is now available to buy in stores and online.

The launch event in Macy’s Impulse section was quite a scene. It began with a brief speech from Macy’s President and CEO Terry Lundgren followed by a photo op with Giambattista himself, flanked by Giambattista for Macy’s-clad models Jessica Stam, Chanel Iman and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem. All of this was surrounded by curious cluster of Macy’s shoppers wondering what was going on.

It’s been a big year for Giambattista, having launched this Macy’s collab as well as his first ever couture collection within a few months of each other.

Christian Siriano Spring 2012: Coral Fixation

Christian Siriano Spring 2012: Coral Fixation

There’s no doubt that “fierce” former Project Runway winner Christian Siriano has done an admirable job of working his flair for the dramatic and utter quotability (not to mention that reality TV recognition) to his advantage. In addition to earning celeb fans like Victoria Beckham and Christina Hendricks and rolling out shoe collections for Payless, the pint-sized mogul was one of the first designers to master the Twitter game. But despite his likability, many of the intricate evening dresses for which he’s known are, in the words of his Runway mentor Tim Gunn, “a lot of look.”

Costello Tagliapietra Spring 2012: Lighter Than Air(Dye)

It would be tough indeed to find a male design duo more appealing than Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra. In addition to cutting killer draped dresses season after season, their uniform–plaid, suspenders, and those signature grizzled beards–make them the original cuddly hipsters of the fashion world. But back to those dresses!

Whether their frocks are cowl- or halter-necked, wrapped or belted, the guys consistently resist the urge to incorporate newfangled cuts or daring body-con. This was no different for spring ’12, but amongst their usual bold solids, Costello and Tagliapietra worked in a number of gorgeous digital-print numbers too. “We took photos of flowers, put them on the computer and layered and layered them,” Costello said. “That’s how the prints came out and informed the collection.” As for the palate–forest green, grey-blue, dusty rose-colored prints–Tagliapietra told us “the colors don’t wear you, they emphasize your personality.” Simon Doonan agrees. “I thought the colors were enormously sophisticated,” he said. “They have an unusual juxtaposition of color.”

The Next H&M Collaborator? Leigh Lezark

Leigh Lezark is next up to collaborate with H&M. The dj-turned-model-turned-?? has some pretty big shoes to fill, following Lanvin, Versace and Karl Lagerfeld.

According to British Vogue, Lezark will work with the brand to create its first ever store-within-in-a-store at Selfridges in London. She’ll also curate a collection of clothing and accessories, which will be on display exclusively at the London Selfridges store, which is set to open August 25.

But what to expect from the perennial It girl’s collection?
