Beauty Tips We Learned from Our Moms

Beauty Tips We Learned from Our Moms

To celebrate Mother’s Day (which is this Sunday, so don’t forget to call your mom!), we’ve asked tons of people in the fashion and beauty industries for the most memorable beauty tip their moms ever gave them. Our moms are our first teachers after all. While we got some traditional mom-isms like, “Always wash your face!” we got plenty of unique bits of wisdom, too. (There are also a disproportionate amount of women who learned to worship at the altar of Clinique’s Three-Step System thanks to their moms.)

Click through to see what Jerry Hall, Georgia May Jagger, Pat Cleveland, Doutzen Kroes, Aerin Lauder and tons more learned from their moms.

Attend New York Fashion Week From Your Couch: A Complete List of Shows Livestreaming This Week

Attend New York Fashion Week From Your Couch: A Complete List of Shows Livestreaming This Week

New York is unreasonably cold right now. Like impending-blizzard-freeze-your-Rag & Bone-covered-butt-off cold. This is exactly why we, and fashionistas nowhere near New York, are praising the fashion gods (more like IMG & various PR people) for the glorious amount of New York fashion week shows livestreaming this week. We wrangled 89 shows (89!) and presentations to tune into over the course of the next week…with even more coming in! The best part? You won’t be judged for taking in these shows in your pjs over some popcorn or pizza or half a bottle of wine…

See any shows we missed? Let us know!

It’s baaaack. Like it or not, Fashion’s Night Out keeps chugging along–and the official website for the globally expanding shopping extravaganza, now in its fourth year, is up and running. As has become the norm for FNO (or what is more accurately a boozy Halloween for shopping enthusiasts), come September 6, stores across NYC and Read more →

Lela Rose Fall 2012: A Love for Linear Curves
Reviews

Lela Rose Fall 2012: A Love for Linear Curves

“I am really an architecture buff, and I love Santiago Calatrava, who’s a Spanish architect,” Lela Rose said to us moments before her fall show. “He talks about these poetics of motion and romance and fluidity, yet he’s this architect working with steel in very linear ways. This collection is about the dichotomy of long, lean, angular silhouettes combined with romance and fluidity.”

Angular yet fluid it was, as well as elegant, but still sort of fun. Graphic floral and digitized plaid sheath dresses with sharp shoulders and sculpted waists in navy, pumpkin, cream, black, mustard, and magenta were shown alongside delicate yet heavily embellished red carpet-worthy frocks with sweetheart necklines and mesh paneling.

Tracy Reese, Lela Rose, Susan Sarandon, Fern Mallis and More Remember 9/11 as the Shows Go On

Between heightened security, including a row of cop cars lining Columbus Street in front of Lincoln Center, and moments of silence to remember lives lost, the 10 year anniversary of September 11 was clearly at the forefront of everyone’s mind today. The shows still went on, so we caught up with fashion insiders and show-goers to find out how they were commemorating and coping with the fated day. Here’s how the fashion community and celebrities are responding to the tragedy:

Fern Mallis: “The first year we moved shows to London because nobody could cope with it. I canceled everything after Liz Lange’s show and was running around the tents telling people they had to clear the venue and stop what they were doing and tell people what happened. After the first season or two, we realized you can’t not go on. They win if we all stop doing everything that we do.”

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, Lincoln Center’s Director of Fashion: “There was a moment of silence for each time the planes hit here at Lincoln Center and many designers have donated to the 9/11 fund. But it’s a big business for NYC so the show has to go on, but with vigilance and remembrance.”

What Should You Wear on a Fashion Industry Interview?

What Should You Wear on a Fashion Industry Interview?

A reader recently emailed us asking what she should wear to an upcoming interview with a prominent New York fashion designer. “Do you think you could help me with some suggestions?” she said.

Of course we could, but first, we wanted to ask a few of our industry favorites what they think one should wear to a fashion interview. Because it really is different than interviewing for a job at a law firm–or even an advertising agency.

Matthew Hunt, the publicity director at Exposure US (who’s worked everywhere from Gucci to Burberry to Ford Models), says it best:

Meredith Melling-Burke On Gossip Girl and Other Major FNO News

Fashion’s Night Out is a little more than a month away and more details are being revealed around the world as the night gets closer.

For one, Hamish Bowles and Lauren Santo-Domingo will not be the only Vogue editors to appear on the September 20 FNO-themed Gossip Girl episode. Vogue market editor Meredith Melling-Burke will also make an appearance and we hear she’s wearing Chloe.

In other news, Payless is offering Facebook fans a chance to win a 5-day trip to NYC for Fashion’s Night Out. The “All Fashion Pass” will include access to the Vogue fashion show and a meet and greet with Payless designers Christian Siriano, Patricia Field, Lela Rose and Isabel Toledo. This actually sounds really cool.

From NYC to Australia, Chanel to Billy Reid, we’ve got the scoop on even more major FNO events you won’t want to miss.

Lela Rose Resort: We Can’t Decide What We Want More, Her Collection or Her Apartment

Steff and I took the subway one stop downtown to check out Lela Rose’s Resort 2011 collection, which she was showing in her newly renovated, gallery-like apartment. We walked into a huge open space with floor to ceiling windows and were greeted by models who were, yes, lounging and standing on tables.

Not just any tables, mind you. The glass tables were suspended from the ceiling and are actually stored up there when they don’t need them for models to sit on. The wooden tables in the middle sink into the floor. This then allows enough room for dancing to music supplied by a DJ, who has his own booth–with ladder access–near the kitchen.

Breaking: Lela Rose’s Models Will Stomp on Her 20 Foot Long Table Tomorrow

Lela Rose’s clothes are decidedly ladylike, but she’s moving out of her comfort zone for tomorrow’s Resort 2011 presentation, taking place at her new downtown apartment.

We have it on good authority that the models will pose on Rose’s 20 ft. long table. which descends from the ceiling, adding a subversive layer to an otherwise perfectly pristine presentation.

We can’t wait to see the girls…and the table…up-close. We’ll post our review of the collection tomorrow afternoon. Until then, check out these gorgeous images from Lela’s loft in T.
