Fashionista Week in Review: The Sea of Shoes Controversy, How To Dress Like a Spice Girl Today and the Best Fashion Schools for Marketing, Journalism, and PR

Get Your Girl Power On: Nearly 15 years later, it is still all about the Spice Girls as a musical based on the group is in the works. Chances are good you’ve picked a favorite and stuck with her (Ginger!) and we put together a guide to recreating those infamous looks. We think it’s high time Union Jack motifs and platform boots made their comeback.

Hip Hop and High Fashion: Rappers and hip hop artists have never shied away from the fashion world, and with recent releases by Kanye West and Nicki Minaj, we’re reminded just how much our favorite MCs love their labels. Naturally, we had to put together a list of our top 10 favorite fashion-related rap lyrics.

Fashion U:Thinking about going to school for a fashion-related major? We did some research and put together our top 10 schools for industry jobs outside of design (think: PR, journalism, marketing, etc.,). Start working on that admissions essay!

ControverSea of Shoes: What started out as a local profile piece has turned into quite a storm over the Sea of Shoes. Blogger Jane Aldridge says the whole thing is “grossly exaggerated” and in need of serious fact-checking, but the author of the original profile is standing up for his piece.

Fashion Faceoff: The Style Evolution of Kate Winslet Vs. Leonardo DiCaprio

Titanic hits theaters tomorrow for the first time in about fifteen years–though this time the drama, action and the infamous iceberg will be bigger thanks to 3-D technology. But that’s not the only thing that’s grown–the film’s stars, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s fame has also sky-rocketed since the movie first hit theaters. And according to Winslet, Leo has, um, grown in other ways as well. The English actress said of the film, “We do look very different, we’re older. Leo’s 37, I’m 36 – we were 21 and 22 when we made that film. You know, he’s fatter now – I’m thinner.” …You said it, Kate, not us!

Check out our round up of Leo and Kate through the years– through thick and thin, in both weight and fashion. Has Kate’s style stayed afloat, and did Leo’s sink with the ship? Click through to see what we think!

Jen Kao Spring 2012: Dangerously Beautiful Flora (and She Tells Us Why Leo DiCaprio Inspired the Collection)

Jen Kao Spring 2012: Dangerously Beautiful Flora (and She Tells Us Why Leo DiCaprio Inspired the Collection)

In a departure from last year’s outer galaxy runway show, Jen Kao was firmly on planet earth–more specifically, Hawaii–for her spring 2012 collection. It was nice to see the esoteric designer lightening up a little bit, too. Well, sort of.

While the visual references to her show were obvious allusions to the sunny flora and fauna of the islands, there was a deeply tragic lost love undercurrent to the collection, too. Set to a backdrop of a hazy sherbet-hued beachfront sunrise, a paper art fascinator-wearing model opened with a sun-ray orb projected onto her chest, which then grew to full-blown daylight in the room. Cue the gasps from the audience.

Fashion Takes a Swan Dive: Beyond Bjork and Black Swan, Swans are Having a Moment

We all know that fashion’s number one favorite animal and prop of choice is cats. However, another graceful animal is making its way into clothing, accessories, ad campaigns and editorials: swans. Not Black Swan or swan-inspired, but actual swans. We most recently noticed them in LOVE‘s “What Lies Beneath” spread, in which they swim around with naked models. They’ve also made notable appearances in Italian Vogue, Miu Miu’s spring 2011 collection and more. Click through for some of our favorite swan-filled fashion imagery. And don’t worry, we didn’t include Bjork’s swan dress since you’ve probably seen it enough.

Carey Mulligan to Play Daisy Buchanan: How Perfect is That?
Entertainment

Carey Mulligan to Play Daisy Buchanan: How Perfect is That?

Carey Mulligan might be our favorite actress to come out of England since Kate Winslet. She’s smart, she chooses great roles, and apparently she frequently flies our favorite airline, Southwest. The fact that she has great style just makes our girl crush even more worthy.

And now Carey is playing Daisy Buchanan to Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire’s Nick Carraway in Baz Luhrmann‘s remake of The Great Gatsby. In the 1970s film version, Mia Farrow played Daisy, Robert Redford played Gatsby and Sam Waterston played Nick.

Clearly a big part of the film will be the costumes. Click through to see the films that have inspired our real life wardrobes.

The Kaiser Courts Scorsese

Dior might’ve landed David Lynch for their next short film, but rumor has it Chanel’s adding Martin Scorsese to their payroll. One could argue they kicked off the whole fashion-loves-short-films craze with the Baz Luhrmann directed Nicole Kidman commercial in 2005. Then Keira Knightly’s Mademoiselle in 2007, which was actually directed by Chanel’s Artistic Director, Read more →

Jolie Gucci

Two years ago we mentioned the making of a Gucci movie and wondered what, if any, role Tom Ford would play. This was pre-Single Man and pre-soon-to-launch-womenswear and we relished the idea of seeing Tom Ford playing Gucci-era Tom Ford on screen. At the time, only Ridley Scott was attached to the project, but late Read more →
