Last Night’s Party: Liv Tyler and More Turn Out to Celebrate Stella McCartney at Saks

As if this blindingly sunny NYC day wasn’t enough to remind you that yes, spring is finally here, last night’s park-themed soiree celebrating Stella McCartney‘s newest (and first) shop in Saks Fifth Avenue seemed to drive the point home. Amidst a cotton candy machine and swings, Stella-clad models mingled with guests on the astro-turfed floor, their bouquets of white and silver balloons bobbing well above the crowd’s heads. And we have to say, we can’t think of a more fitting way to showcase McCartney’s playful motifs this season, from the confetti-like sheer dresses to the oversized, juicy-looking fruit prints.

But while the mood was festive, both McCartney and co-host Liv Tyler turned serious when asked about the Costume Institute’s McQueen exhibit at the Met: “The exhibition is exquisite,” said McCartney “He was a good friend of mine for a long time.” Tyler said. “[So the event] was very sad, but also very beautiful.” She added, with a thoughtful laugh, “He would have thought that night was so, so amazing.”

Still, it was hard to be somber on such a celebratory night.

The Top 21 Best Dressed at the Met Costume Institute Gala

Editors, designers, celebrities and models turned it out on the red carpet at last night’s Fashion Oscars, aka the Met Ball. Unlike the real Oscars, this is a red carpet where people who really know and care about fashion take risks. As last night’s gala celebrated “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” the McQueen retrospective opening at the Met’s Costume Institute this week, many attendees honored the late designer by wearing his incredible creations (some even got ready in them in the windows of Barneys). But of course, there was also Chanel, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Gucci, Givenchy, Valentino, etc.,

Gemma Arterton is the New Face of G-Star

Gemma Arterton is the New Face of G-Star

Gemma Arterton, the British actress who has landed on our best dressed list more than once, is replacing Liv Tyler as the face of denim label G-Star.

Shot by Anton Corbijn, the global campaign features Arterton in plenty of denim with her hair pulled off of her face by a retro-style bandana. We’re impressed with G-Star’s choice. When the label first brought on Liv Tyler, some wondered if this was just another brand aiming to cash in on a celebrity endorsement. Sure, the fame these ladies possess helps sell the product, but it’s obvious that G-Star aims for a particular kind of muse: a sort of modern Snow White. Tyler and Arterton are both fair with dark hair and voluptuous features from lips to hips. That’s a celebrity spokesperson we can get behind.

The campaign hits in mid-February.

Get Inspired: Liv Tyler in Empire Records. Happy Rex Manning Day!

While flipping through Freja Beha Erichsen’s aptly titled “Colour Shock” spread shot by Josh Olins in August’s British Vogue, we paused at the final image of Freja in a fluffy baby blue sweater. We knew that mohair sweater. Liv Tyler wore it Empire Records.

Tyler’s outfit in Empire Records–the cropped baby blue mohair sweater, the tiny plaid kilt, the docs, her long brown hair parted straight down the middle–was the coolest thing ever in 1995 when the cult flick came out. 15 years later we still think it’s worthy of some fashion inspiration. So does British Vogue apparently. And Erin Wasson styled a shoot for Elle based on the movie last year. (Lauren’s finds her mid-90s fashion inspiration in Mall Rats).

Julia Falls Into the Gap

Those much anticipated Gap ads have finally debuted. Well, sort of. Division Street just posted four: Chanel Iman, Georgina Chapman, Lily Donaldson and, unexpectedly, Julia Restoin-Roitfled. We love models, duh, but Carine’s daughter wins this one. Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for the ads featuring Leigh, Liv Tyler, Hugh Dancy, Ryan McGinley and hopefully, despite what Read more →
