It’s that time of year again. Nope, we don’t mean Comic Con–we’re talking about September glossy cover reveals. September issues are traditionally the cash cows for any fashion mag, and whoever graces the cover can make or break that month’s sales. Today WWD revealed a slew of covers–and we’ve added some reveals of our own.
Overall it’s not a very surprising list.
April Fools is a fun “holiday.” However, you have to be even more skeptical than usual of every single thing you read on the internet on April 1. Yesterday was no exception: Conan O’Brien took over Mashable and Google News declared that Mitt Romney dropped out of the Republican primary. Our friends in fashion got very creative, too–and some of it we actually believed. Or wanted to believe (like that Tom Ford x H&M was confirmed. Damn you, Lucky mag!) From multiple silly things about Kate Middleton to a flashback to the 80s, click through to see the funniest April Fools jokes the internet conjured up.

2011 did not end on a good note for magazines. According to Audit Bureau of Circulations, the industry was down an average of 10 percent, WWD is reporting.
And that’s not even the worst of it. Some fashion titles fell much harder.

It’s not exactly a secret that Conde Nast has been a little late to the whole Internet thing. Look no further than the fact that their most famous fashion title–Vogue, in case you weren’t sure–only got a dot com a few years ago. So it makes sense the famed publisher is trying to make up for lost time.
Today Conde Nast launched new social media tool “Social Sidekick.” The in-house developed tool works as an aggregator for most-shared content from W, Style.com, Glamour, Self, Teen Vogue and Lucky. It sounds sort of fancy but all it actually means is that on those sites there will be a window at the bottom of the page, which splashes out popular content from the aforementioned sister sites–basically, it’s an aggregator like any other aggregator on any other site. It’s not a bad idea–especially from the advertising perspective–but it’s certainly not groundbreaking, or as Business Insider says, “It’s nice to look at, but it won’t make a big difference to the bottom line.”
Hello there and welcome to Business Casual, a new monthly column following my jarring and (hopefully!) exciting transition from working as a fashion writer in NYC to attending business school at MIT Sloan. I wanted to write this column because some fashion friends have expressed an interest in swallowing the grad school pill themselves and tumbling down this crazy rabbit hole. But coming from this industry, it can be tricky to know where to begin. My hope is to fill in those blanks. Please hit me up in the comments with any of your questions. From deciding to go to business school to getting accepted is a long and annoying process, but you can get through it.
