Scarlett, Rooney, Keira and More Cover W

For its November issue, W is celebrating its 40th anniversary with four special oversized covers–each of which pays tribute to one decade in the magazine’s history.

Shot by Steven Meisel and styled by Edward Enninful, the covers and corresponding editorial feature Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Scarlett Johansson, and Keira Knightley all made up to look like they just stepped out of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and Aughts, respectively.

Elle Fanning Is Annoyed That She Can’t Steal Dakota’s Clothes Anymore (Plus Check Out the Fanning Sisters’ Gorgeous Editorial in W)

As we reported last week, sisters of the moment Elle and Dakota Fanning are W‘s December cover girls. Along with a less blurry image of the gorgeous, ethereal cover, we now have the full spread styled by Lori Goldstein and shot by Mario Sorrenti. There’s also a lovely interview by Lynn Hirschberg–two separate ones in fact–in which the girls dish about borrowing each other’s clothes, working at such a young age and how fashion-obsessed Elle reacted to being invited to the Chanel couture show.

Click through for the best bits from the interview and to see the “fabulous Fannings” wearing Chanel couture and looking super pretty in the editorial.

Who, What, When, Where and Why: Inside the New W With Stefano and Lynn

Today, we had the pleasure of spending lunch at an exclusive preview of the new W magazine lead by Stefano Tonchi. Tonchi walked us through a slideshow of the September issue and even sat down with us at the end for an intimate Q & A.

Also lots of fun was sitting at Lynn Hirschberg’s table, who, in between bites of salmon and sips of iced tea, discussed the aftermath of her infamous M.I.A. article, being an Emmy nominee and how much she liked the upcoming film “Social Network.” We felt super lucky to get to listen to such smart, likable people as Stefano and Lynn, whose obvious passion for W lead us to be very optimistic about the magazine’s future. A breakdown of the session:

Editorial Musical Chairs: A Visual Guide

Confused by the major shakeups in fashion publishing? I’ve put together a handy visual–to be updated weekly, or biweekly, depending on movement–to help you find your way.

The Rundown: As I’m sure you all know, Sally Singer left Vogue to become Editor-in-Chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine and Stefano Tonchi left T to become Editor-in-Chief of W. Florence Kane, formerly a fashion writer at Vogue, has been named senior editor at C California Style Magazine and Patrick O’Connell, formerly Vogue’s director of communications, has left the company. Anne Christensen left her position as T’s fashion director and it will be interesting to see how she is replaced. Bee-Shyuan Chang left T to go to Stylecaster.

M.I.A. vs. Lynn Hirschberg, Part Two: Audio Recordings and French Fries

M.I.A. vs. Lynn Hirschberg, Part Two: Audio Recordings and French Fries

A few days after responding to a scathing profile by Lynn Hirschberg by posting the writer’s phone number on Twitter, M.I.A. is once again taking aim. This weekend, on her record label’s website, the pop star released a couple of low-quality audio snippets of the interview, one of which gave a bit of context to a quote where Maya — M.I.A’s real name — waxes revolutionary while nibbling on an expensive snack.

M.I.A. vs. Lynn Hirschberg: The Battle Begins
People Are Talking

M.I.A. vs. Lynn Hirschberg: The Battle Begins

M.I.A. seems like the kind of girl you don’t want to get in a fight with. So when writer Lynn Hirschberg wrote a less-than-flattering cover story on her in the New York Times Magazine, disaster was bound to occur.

Hirschberg’s article, published online yesterday and arriving by mail this weekend, includes phrases like, “Unity holds no allure for Maya–she thrives on conflict, real or imagined. ‘I kind of want to be an outsider,’ she said, eating a truffle-flavored French fry. ‘I don’t want to make the same music, sing about the same stuff, talk about the same things. If that makes me a terrorist, then I’m a terrorist.’”

Despite her love of conflict and contradiction, M.I.A. was not so pleased about this portrayal. So she took to Twitter, releasing Lynn Hirschberg’s phone number to her over 100,000 followers.
