Kate Young on Stylists as Celebrities, Dressing Michelle Williams for the Oscars and Her New Gig For Macy’s
Kate Young was recently named one of “Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylists” by the Hollywood Reporter and after one look at her celebrity clientele, it’s easy to see why. She dresses Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz, to name a few, all people on whom we’ve come to rely for spot-on perfect red carpet looks. This also means that, considering it’s awards season and two of her clients are very much a part of that, Kate is super busy. Still, she found time for another new project.
She’s the latest INC Editor at Large for Spring/Summer 2012 at Macy’s. She follows inaugural INC Editor at Large Anna Dello Russo and her duties are a bit vague, as those of an ‘Editor at Large’ tend to be. What we know for sure is that they include styling the new INC collection, which you can peruse below, and a hip party thrown in her honor, which took place yesterday evening at Le Bain. We stopped by to chat with the super stylist about that gig, plus the attention celebrity stylists have been getting lately, dressing Natalie and Michelle for the Oscars and other upcoming projects, like Natalie’s next Dior campaign (!).

Doo.ri Chung’s New Line for Macy’s Has Something for Everyone: Check Out the Full Collection
You might not be too familiar with New York-based designer Doo-ri Chung. Despite her serious fashion cred (her first job out of Parsons was working in Geoffrey Beene‘s sample room with Alber Elbaz) and being able count First Lady Michelle Obama as a client, she still considers herself a “very small, very young” niche designer without a ton of name recognition. But that should change come February 15, when her capsule collection for Macy’s contemporary fashion department ‘Impulse’ hits 185 stores and goes up on line. Chung is the latest in an impressive list of designers to design capsule collectons for the mass retailer–a list that includes names like Karl Lagerfeld, Giambattista Valli and Matthew Williamson (to name a few).
We got a chance to chat with Chung yesterday as she previewed her collection–a wearable mix of Chung’s signature draped jersey pieces priced between $39 and $159–at hot Hell’s Kitchen resto Danji. In these collab-happy times (in the last few months alone we’ve seen Versace for H&M, Jason Wu for Target, and Missoni for Target work shoppers into a frenzy) Chung was still hesitant about doing a collaboration.

As you’re probably aware, a fairly absurd amount of media attention has been focused on Versace’s H&M collaboration over the past few weeks, which is set to hit stores this Saturday. As it turns out, media attention, rather than profits, is often the chief benefit for H&M and other mass retailers who choose to collaborate with designers. In today’s Times, Eric Wilson takes an in-depth look at what exactly designers and retailers get out of these collaborations–from Alexander McQueen’s Target collab to Christian Siriano’s line for Payless.
In theory, and as this article tries to show, designer collaborations are mutually beneficial for the designer and the retailer. The designer gets a hefty amount of money to put towards his or her own collection, as well as increased publicity and awareness among consumers; the retailer gets publicity, profits and raises its cool factor by attaching itself to names like Rodarte and Proenza Schouler.

Did Material Girl Make You Feel Left Out? Madonna’s Launching Her Own Line For Grown Ups Called ‘Truth or Dare’
Madonna is finally launching her own brand for grown-ups. Following the success of Material Girl, the junior’s line she does with her daughter Lola, Madonna is launching Truth or Dare by Madonna, starting with a fragrance deal with Coty. After that will come footwear, handbags and intimates. According to PR Newswire, Truth or Dare is aimed at women ages 27-50 “who have a timeless style and an innate sex appeal.”
If that sounds like you, the collection will reportedly be available exclusively at Macy’s (like Material Girl) for the initial launch in 2012, but the fragrance will get a wider distribution in 2013.
But why now?

Are you one of the many who missed out Missoni for Target? If so, don’t fret: It probably won’t be long before you’ll have another chance to snag some affordable Missoni. In news that should surprise no one, the Missonis say they plan to follow the wildly successful Target collaboration with another lower-priced line. And they may go the route that many high-end designers have been going of late: Macy’s.
The Los Angeles Times‘s Booth Moore interviewed three generations of Missoni (Angela, Rosita and Margherita) to chat about the phenomenon that was their internet-crashing collaboration with Target as well as tentative plans to do another low-priced collaboration.

Watch: Madonna and Daughter Lola Make Fun of Themselves and Each Other as They Search for the Next Face of Material Girl
By Cheryl WischhoverMadonna is nothing if not self-aware–after all, she manipulated her own image successfully for several decades. In this new promotional video for her Macy’s Material Girl line, she pokes a lot of fun at herself–her image, her diva reputation, her age, her uncool mom-speak (“Whatevs” is “Timeless”)–while daughter Lola plays the annoyed teenager role perfectly. (We suspect she may not have had to act very hard.)

Giambattista Valli Celebrates Macy’s Line, Says It Was ‘Identical’ to Designing Couture
Last night, we stopped by Macy’s Herald Square to celebrate the launch of Giambattista Valli for Macy’s, the latest in the department store’s string of high-profile designer collaborations. Yes, the ultra-feminine, cocktail dress-filled collection is now available to buy in stores and online.
The launch event in Macy’s Impulse section was quite a scene. It began with a brief speech from Macy’s President and CEO Terry Lundgren followed by a photo op with Giambattista himself, flanked by Giambattista for Macy’s-clad models Jessica Stam, Chanel Iman and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem. All of this was surrounded by curious cluster of Macy’s shoppers wondering what was going on.
It’s been a big year for Giambattista, having launched this Macy’s collab as well as his first ever couture collection within a few months of each other.

Frances Bean Marrying a Kurt Cobain Doppelganger?: Rumors are swirling that our fair Frances Bean is engaged to Isaiah Silva, a guy with longish hair and a beard who plays in a band and wears flannel shirts– a description that fits basically every male I went to college with, the entire neighborhood of Williamsburg, and my own brother. Yup, serious daddy complex there. {Gawker}

Karl Lagerfeld said the new campaign, featuring Joan Smalls and Saskia de Brauw (and styled by Carine Roitfeld), will focus on “athletics and the sea.” Freja… forever in our hearts. {Fashionologie}

We haven’t even had a chance to try on the Giambattista Valli for Macy’s collection yet–which hits stores next week–but the retailer has already announced its next collaboration. Doo-Ri Chung, who just made headlines after dressing Michelle Obama for a state dinner in South Korea, is the next to design a line for the mass retailer’s Impulse line, WWD is reporting.
The collection will drop February 15 and be available for about eight weeks; prices will range from $39 to $159. So what the collection will look like? You can expect to see the draping, color-blocking and prints that Doo-Ri is known for on mini and maxi dresses, leggings, blouses, and trenches, another Chung signature. As for designing at a lower price point, Doo-Ri says it wasn’t much of a challenge.
