A Closer Look at Mass Retailer Collabs: How Much Designers Actually Make From Them and How Success Is Measured

A Closer Look at Mass Retailer Collabs: How Much Designers Actually Make From Them and How Success Is Measured

As you’re probably aware, a fairly absurd amount of media attention has been focused on Versace’s H&M collaboration over the past few weeks, which is set to hit stores this Saturday. As it turns out, media attention, rather than profits, is often the chief benefit for H&M and other mass retailers who choose to collaborate with designers. In today’s Times, Eric Wilson takes an in-depth look at what exactly designers and retailers get out of these collaborations–from Alexander McQueen’s Target collab to Christian Siriano’s line for Payless.

In theory, and as this article tries to show, designer collaborations are mutually beneficial for the designer and the retailer. The designer gets a hefty amount of money to put towards his or her own collection, as well as increased publicity and awareness among consumers; the retailer gets publicity, profits and raises its cool factor by attaching itself to names like Rodarte and Proenza Schouler.

Did Material Girl Make You Feel Left Out? Madonna’s Launching Her Own Line For Grown Ups Called ‘Truth or Dare’

Madonna is finally launching her own brand for grown-ups. Following the success of Material Girl, the junior’s line she does with her daughter Lola, Madonna is launching Truth or Dare by Madonna, starting with a fragrance deal with Coty. After that will come footwear, handbags and intimates. According to PR Newswire, Truth or Dare is aimed at women ages 27-50 “who have a timeless style and an innate sex appeal.”

If that sounds like you, the collection will reportedly be available exclusively at Macy’s (like Material Girl) for the initial launch in 2012, but the fragrance will get a wider distribution in 2013.

But why now?

Missoni Wants to Do Another Lower-Priced Line, Possibly With Macy’s

Are you one of the many who missed out Missoni for Target? If so, don’t fret: It probably won’t be long before you’ll have another chance to snag some affordable Missoni. In news that should surprise no one, the Missonis say they plan to follow the wildly successful Target collaboration with another lower-priced line. And they may go the route that many high-end designers have been going of late: Macy’s.

The Los Angeles Times‘s Booth Moore interviewed three generations of Missoni (Angela, Rosita and Margherita) to chat about the phenomenon that was their internet-crashing collaboration with Target as well as tentative plans to do another low-priced collaboration.

The fashion industry has teamed up with New York City for some serious job recruiting efforts: If you have a passion for the business of fashion (and you’re a graduating college senior), start dusting off your resume and choosing your interview outfits.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and Parsons the New School for Design just launched a program called Fashion Draft NYC. The goal of the program is to put exceptional candidates in front of some of the biggest fashion companies around, with the goal of hiring and keeping the industry in NYC viable and vibrant.

If you’re one of the 25 to 30 applicants chosen for the program, you’ll be flown to NYC from February 16-18 (room and board included) and will have the opportunity to meet with reps from companies like Macy’s, Theory, Bloomingdale’s, LF USA, and Gilt. Watch: Madonna and Daughter Lola Make Fun of Themselves and Each Other as They Search for the Next Face of Material Girl

Madonna is nothing if not self-aware–after all, she manipulated her own image successfully for several decades. In this new promotional video for her Macy’s Material Girl line, she pokes a lot of fun at herself–her image, her diva reputation, her age, her uncool mom-speak (“Whatevs” is “Timeless”)–while daughter Lola plays the annoyed teenager role perfectly. Giambattista Valli Celebrates Macy’s Line, Says It Was ‘Identical’ to Designing Couture

Giambattista Valli Celebrates Macy’s Line, Says It Was ‘Identical’ to Designing Couture

Last night, we stopped by Macy’s Herald Square to celebrate the launch of Giambattista Valli for Macy’s, the latest in the department store’s string of high-profile designer collaborations. Yes, the ultra-feminine, cocktail dress-filled collection is now available to buy in stores and online.

The launch event in Macy’s Impulse section was quite a scene. It began with a brief speech from Macy’s President and CEO Terry Lundgren followed by a photo op with Giambattista himself, flanked by Giambattista for Macy’s-clad models Jessica Stam, Chanel Iman and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem. All of this was surrounded by curious cluster of Macy’s shoppers wondering what was going on.

It’s been a big year for Giambattista, having launched this Macy’s collab as well as his first ever couture collection within a few months of each other.

Fashion News Roundup: Chanel Replaces Freja Beha Erichsen, a New Dior Photo Book, and Paula Deen Gets a Clothing Line

Frances Bean Marrying a Kurt Cobain Doppelganger?: Rumors are swirling that our fair Frances Bean is engaged to Isaiah Silva, a guy with longish hair and a beard who plays in a band and wears flannel shirts– a description that fits basically every male I went to college with, the entire neighborhood of Williamsburg, and my own brother. Yup, serious daddy complex there. {Gawker}

Chanel Replaces Freja Beha Erichsen in Carine Roitfeld-Styled Spring Ads: After five consecutive campaigns, Freja is being replaced in Chanel’s ads. Karl Lagerfeld said the new campaign, featuring Joan Smalls and Saskia de Brauw (and styled by Carine Roitfeld), will focus on “athletics and the sea.” Freja… forever in our hearts. {Fashionologie}

Doo-Ri Chung Is the Next Guest Designer at Macy’s

Doo-Ri Chung Is the Next Guest Designer at Macy’s

We haven’t even had a chance to try on the Giambattista Valli for Macy’s collection yet–which hits stores next week–but the retailer has already announced its next collaboration. Doo-Ri Chung, who just made headlines after dressing Michelle Obama for a state dinner in South Korea, is the next to design a line for the mass retailer’s Impulse line, WWD is reporting.

The collection will drop February 15 and be available for about eight weeks; prices will range from $39 to $159. So what the collection will look like? You can expect to see the draping, color-blocking and prints that Doo-Ri is known for on mini and maxi dresses, leggings, blouses, and trenches, another Chung signature. As for designing at a lower price point, Doo-Ri says it wasn’t much of a challenge.

Here It Is: Giambattista Valli for Macy’s, the Entire Collection

Macy’s previewed the latest installment in their designer collaboration series last night at a private space in the Meatpacking district. Next up, as you know, is Giambattista Valli, whose fun over-the-top flirty Paris show this season was attended by brand devotees like Inès de La Fressange, Lee Radziwill and Olivia Palermo. Valli’s mod multi-textured color-blocked shifts have a fashionista following for good reason, so we were excited to see what his lower priced collection for Macy’s contemporary division “Impulse” would look like.

Valli is all about cocktail dresses, so there were plenty of those–our favorite was the black shift with leopard blocks and a bold red stripe that recalls his spring 2011 collection. The all-over leopard pieces–a chic day coat and matching tuxedo pants–should fly off the shelves, too. It’s a small-ish collection, just 30 pieces compared with Karl Lagerfeld’s 45 piece collection for the retailer, but there are plenty of perfect party frocks, skirts embellished with petals, and cute sequined tees to outfit you for the holiday season.

Betsey Johnson on Her Classic Grandma Style, And Why She Doesn’t Want to Cartwheel Anymore

Betsey Johnson on Her Classic Grandma Style, And Why She Doesn’t Want to Cartwheel Anymore

Last night, I popped over to Macy’s flagship for a meet-and-greet with Betsey Johnson who is launching her new timepiece line at the famed department store. And, I have to say, interviewing the kooky Betsey Johnson is kind of exactly like how it sounds.

After being ushered into a room filled with a couple of Betsey‘s handlers, I was welcomed to take a seat next to the famed designer, while another employee spread Betsey’s just-launched watch collection on the table. I introduced myself to Johnson, who gave me a warm welcome and motioned a hello with one hand–the other hand was otherwise occupied, getting a manicure. “I need my quick dry…where’s the quick dry?” she rasped, turning to her manicurist. “I have to fix the tips on my nails, if anyone takes pictures…” she trailed off, giving me a knowing look.

Once Betsey settled in a bit, we got down to business: The watches. “I hate to say it,” said Johnson, picking up a classic-looking round watch with leather strap, “But after the digital space cadet one, this one is my favorite because I’m grandma classic.”

Anna Dello Russo On Her Collaboration With Macy’s, Why Web is More Relevant than Print and Confirms Marc Jacobs at Dior

Yesterday the Anna Dello Russo was on hand in New York to talk about her latest role as “guest editor at large” for Macy’s INC line. Though the Vogue Japan editor and OG street style star is known for wearing head-to-toe runway looks, styling for Macy’s wasn’t as much of a stretch as you’d think.

“Having followed Anna and her past and her present and the huge following that she has in both the fashion community as well as the millennial customer, we thought she would bring just a tremendous amount of creativity and experience and a creative voice to our campaign,” said Nancy Slavin, SVP of Marketing at MMG. We’d have to agree. In her role as “editor at large” she styled the campaign (lots of yellow and gold) using her deep fashion connections to snag supermodel Karolina Kurkova (and herself) and photographer Inez van Lamsweerde. Well played, Macy’s.

We sat down with ADR, who looked stunning as ever in a tight ruched black INC mini (note to self: do some yoga), to talk about her work with Macy’s, her appeal to the “younger generation,” why fashion is too serious, and finally, Marc Jacobs at Dior.

Fashionista’s FNO Guide #1: Where to Find the Celebrities
Fashion Is Fun

Fashionista’s FNO Guide #1: Where to Find the Celebrities

We can’t believe Fashion’s Night Out (and, thus, fashion week) is only a week away. As anyone who has ever been to a Fashion’s Night Out is probably aware, they pack enough events to fill an entire week into just a few hours, so pre-FNO planning is key. While Vogue‘s interactive map is quite handy, that is still a lot of stores to go through. So, we’re preparing a few of our own Fashion’s Night Out guides.

This one is for those of you who just want to see some famous people. We don’t blame you! Fashion’s Night Out offers rare opportunities to get up close and personal with real Hollywood stars. Maybe Tilda Swinton and Ne-Yo will become friends or Daniel Radcliffe will get wasted or Alexa Chung will debut a new haircut or Seth Meyers will screw up your drink or the Real Housewives of New York will be insane (that last one is the most likely)! Here’s our guide to where all your favorite celebs will be.
