Hearst Fashion Titles Set September Issue Records–But How Will Condé Nast Fare?

We alread know the covers, but how thick are this year’s all-important September issues going to be?

Pretty thick. Just when we thought print was dying, magazines are seeing an increase in ad pages, especially in fashion and beauty. Things are looking particularly good for Hearst, whose relatively recent acquisition, Elle, will debut Hearst’s largest September issue of all time. The fashion title will have 400 ad pages (annoying for us, but good for publishing!), up 14% from last year.

Clearly Elle‘s doing well over at Hearst–this news comes on the heels of four consecutive record-breaking issues in terms of ad pages. Fellow Hearst titles Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire were not exempt from the fashion and beauty ad page increase: the former increased by 16.6% to 360 pages, while the latter went up 23% to 237 pages. It’s Marie Claire’s largest issue ever.

Who’s Covering What: All the September Issue Cover Stars Revealed

It’s that time of year again. Nope, we don’t mean Comic Con–we’re talking about September glossy cover reveals. September issues are traditionally the cash cows for any fashion mag, and whoever graces the cover can make or break that month’s sales. Today WWD revealed a slew of covers–and we’ve added some reveals of our own.

Overall it’s not a very surprising list.

Fashion News Roundup: Erin Wasson Models for Rockport Shoes, a New Balenciaga Exhibit Debuts, and Ralph Rucci Gets Lifetime Achievement Award

Erin Wasson to front Rockport Campaign: The model-turned-jewelry designer is going back in front of the camera as the face of Rockport’s Fall 2012 campaign. The shoe brand hopes that Wasson will help emphasize the “stylish” aspect of these shoes, which are worn mostly for comfort. {WWD subscription required}

Beard and Mustache Accessories Are a Thing?: It seems hipster girls are always trying to (ironically) look as unattractive as possible, thus making them more attractive to male hipsters. Refinery 29 found some chained accessories that attach to sunglasses, and hang down to create a “beard.” Weird. {Refinery 29}

Paris’ Galleria to Unveil Balenciaga Exhibit: To honor the 40th anniversary of the designer’s death, the Galleria in Paris will debut a Balenciaga tribute this Friday. The show, “Cristóbal Balenciaga, Collectionneur de Modes” (“Cristóbal Balenciaga, Collector of Fashion”) features a wealth of 18-20th century Spanish clothing, which was a great inspiration for the designer. {WWD subscription required}

YouTube Paid Hearst $10 Million to Launch New YouTube TV Shows Like ‘Sexy vs. Skanky’ and ‘Big Girl in a Skinny World’

Your favorite magazine features might soon become digital television shows if YouTube’s latest expansion plan takes off. According to AdWeek, a new YouTube channel called Hello Style is set to launch April 15 and will feature high-quality television content from Hearst‘s lady publications: Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar. (What about Elle?) In addition to providing the platform, YouTube also provided money–a lot of it.

What Fashion Internships are Really Like at Conde Nast and Hearst

Most of what we know about the nature of fashion internships comes from our own experiences, friends’ experiences, articles like these and unrealistic portrayals on shows like The Hills and Gossip Girl. However, there are other resources that we didn’t know existed until recently–websites where people can go to anonymously rate and/or review their internship experiences. They’re sort of like RateMyProfessor, but for internships.

Unfortunately, there isn’t one that’s overwhelmingly comprehensive, but after perusing a few, we found some good (or really bad depending on how you look at it) evaluations of internships at companies like Condé Nast, Hearst, PR Consulting and more.

Most (not all) of them are negative and filled with horror stories–mainly because people seem more interested in writing negative things on the internet than positive ones. We’re sure plenty of people had positive experiences at these companies as well. Regardless, many of them do offer good insight into what people do during fashion internships. Read and learn.

Fashion News Roundup: People Are Already Returning Marni x H&M, Jimmy Choo Designed a Shoe Inspired by Iris Apfel, and Gisele Models for Esprit

Marni at H&M Is Already Being Returned: The folks over at Madison Avenue Spy found a bevy of returned items from the Marni collaboration at their local H&M store. We wonder: with all the money to potentially be made from selling your unwanted Marni at H&M wares on eBay, why bother returning anything at all? {Madison Avenue Spy}

Is Azealia Banks Playing The Chanel Show in Japan? The rapper took to her beloved Twitter account to announce an upcoming gig with the label, apparently playing their Japan fashion show. The tweet has since been deleted, maybe because it was supposed to be a secret? Anyhoo, if you’re headed to the Chanel show in Japan, you might be treated to a live performance from Ms. Banks. {Fashin}

Jimmy Choo Designs ‘Iris’ Shoe: The folks over at Jimmy Choo have designed a woven leather sandal with a five-inch heel named after 90-year-old style icon Iris Apfel. While it must be a great honor to have a shoe named after you, we wonder which 90-year-old woman is still wearing five-inch heels? Wouldn’t flats have been a more appropriate choice? {Telegraph}

Fashionista Turns Five! Fashionista’s Third Editor, Abby Gardner, Reminisces with a Top 10 List

Fashionista Turns Five! Fashionista’s Third Editor, Abby Gardner, Reminisces with a Top 10 List

Believe it or not, Fashionista turns five years old this month. Which is, you know, pretty old in blog years. To celebrate our big bday, we’ve asked all of Fashionista’s former editors (in chronological order that’s Faran Krentcil, Natalie Hormilla, Abby Gardner, Britt Aboutaleb, and Lauren Sherman) to reflect back on their time at Fashionista from the highs (seeing a Chanel show) to the lows (being chewed out by Arianne Phillips for leaking her fashion week plans and costing her a client).

First, Fashionista’s founding editor, Faran Krentcil, hilariously and poignantly recalled her first year at the helm. Then Natalie Hormilla, took a wistful walk down memory lane. Next up, Abby Gardner, Fashionista’s third editor, who is now the Site Director at Marie Claire presents her Top 10 list.

My time at Fashionista (2009 through early 2010) was a fun one. It was just me, Britt, our fantastic interns and our shared love of all things Gwyneth. Looking back on it now I could go on and on about so many things, but I decided I’d go all Letterman (we’re from the same hometown after all) and narrow it down to a Top 10 list. Though really these are in no particular order.
