Vogue may have gotten snubbed at last year’s National Magazine awards–but this year the mag took home top honors.
Vogue may have gotten snubbed at last year’s National Magazine awards–but this year the mag took home top honors.
Last night’s red carpet at the New York premiere for The Great Gastby brought some industry heavy-hitters like Anna Wintour and Jenna Lyons, as well as the megawatt stars of the film like Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio. Of course, they all brought their sartorial A-game. And Martha Stewart brought her gold sequin capris.
J.C. Penney CEO Ron Johnson is out, according to a press release sent out by the company. The store’s former CEO, Mike Ullman, will replace him. This news should not come as a surprise to anyone who’s been watching the Penney saga unfold. Johnson, a former Apple and Target exec who joined J.C. Penney in November 2011, tried to bring the long-struggling store into the 21st Century with an updated design, tons of designer collaborations, lower prices, and the elimination of discounts. (Each of these tactics, particularly the last one, alienated what’s left of Penney’s loyal customers. People are creatures of habit. They’re used to markdowns. Even if a product is cheaper in the first place, they can’t help but want to see it discounted.)
Anyway, Johnson also brought in some great brands to Penney, including Martha Stewart (whoops, that resulted in a lawsuit), Michelle Obama favorite Duro Olowu, MNG by Mango and Joe Fresh. These were all great prospects. But no matter how hard Johnson tried, no matter how good his strategy was, it was never going work. Here’s why.

Whatever fun you think you’ve engaged in this past week, it’s basically a fact that it hasn’t been as awesome as the fun Demi Moore’s been having at Art Basel. Unless, maybe, you’re Martha Stewart…
The tented setting at last night’s Chanel Art Basel party gave the whole evening a wedding vibe (albeit a very fashionable one)–as did the evening’s soundtrack, which tended towards songs like “Son of a Preacher Man,” “Satisfaction,” and “Shout,” and packed the dance floor. Adriana Lima was there, looking as gorgeous as if she’d just stepped off the Victoria’s Secret runway. So was Naomi Campbell, and Martha Stewart, and Demi Moore–who looked like she was having a really good time getting cozy with Lenny Kravitz and grooving in her seat in the VIP section. At some point she even found a cat to cuddle, which would obviously enhance anyone’s night.

On the left is Martha Stewart on the cover of her latest Halloween issue. On the right is the late style icon Isabella Blow, whom we’re sure needs no introduction.
While we appreciate Martha breaking out of her conservative Connecticut Mom image and, ahem, spreading her wings, we have to call her out for cribbing a bit too much from Blow, who wore the artsy style in 2006, when it was actually original. Furthermore, Blow’s butterfly mask was created by milliner master Philip Treacy, while Martha’s kind of looks like she hot-gunned some poor butterfly’s remains together and stuck them to her face.
Elie Tahari has seen success in the fashion biz for over 40 years. So to ensure his success for the next 40, this week he’s relaunched his website, elietahari.com. The revamped site features an enhanced e-commerce experience, a “social media” component, and a bulked up editorial component that sees Elie himself interviewing celebrities and curating pages.
We chatted with the Israeli-born fashion mogul about his new editorial role, the celebrity interviews he’d like to score, and the point of view he’ll bring to his new site. We can only hope it’s as honest, charming, and hilarious as Elie is in conversation.
