New York Will Probably Get a Men’s Fashion Week
Yay, more fashion weeks!
Yay, more fashion weeks!
The traveling menswear circus kicked off last week in London for the city’s inaugural men’s fashion week, moved to Florence for prestigious menswear tradeshow Pitti Uomo, then on to Milan, and is currently wrapping up in Paris. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from covering Pitti Uomo and perusing Tommy Ton’s street style shots for GQ during the men’s shows, it’s that the boys love to preen and peacock outside the show venues just as much as the girls.
But what we like about taking in men’s street style is that there seems to be more of an emphasis on styling rather than the “it-items” we see proudly paraded around during the womenswear shows. It’s a cuff rolled just-so with crazy colored socks showing underneath. Or a double-breasted blazer tailored to perfection with gloves hanging out of the breast pocket. Or sneakers and a Supreme hat worn with a more tailored look. More often than not, we get styling tips for ourselves.
The only thing more awkward and uncomfortable than spotting a man wearing leggings as pants in Manhattan? This article about men wearing leggings as pants in Manhattan, brought to us by the fine (and as you’d imagine, somewhat conservative) people at the Business Insider.
From the increasingly well-documented street style scene outside of Pitti Uomo (it’s starting to rival the scene outside any major fashion week venue) to the number of nattily dressed gents we see walking down the street in NYC, there’s no question that dudes have been stepping it up in the personal style department.
There’s even a burgeoning menswear (that’s #menswear if you’re scrolling through Twitter or Tumblr) clique, comprised of editors at print publications like GQ and Complex as well as bloggers at sites like Four Pins and Selectism and Hypebeast. They are the arbiters of men’s style, speakers of the language of #menswear. Yes, they have their own language and we dont’ understand at all. Cop some jawns? That dude is sprezzy? Say what?
We caught up with Kevin Burrows and Lawrence Schlossman, authors of the hilarious menswear phenomenon Fuck Yeah Menswear to chat about their blog, just-released book, and what half of the stuff they’re talking about actually means (because seriously, they speak a different language).
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that menswear is having a moment. And it’s not just the boys who are benefiting. Now, more than, ever is the time for ladies to start stealing from men’s closets. “I have to admit that I have always been a fan of women’s casual style–from Read more →

Real Men (Don’t) Wear Runway Menswear: Many of the menswear looks that are sent down runways are outrageous and unwearable, to say the least. We polled men on the streets of New York to see where, if ever, they would wear the codpieces, lace and lobster breastplates.
Introducing Team USA’s Glamourous Gymnasts: Gymnastics is one of our favorite Olympic events (we know we’re not alone!), so after the five girls representing the US were revealed, we took a closer look at who they are and how their make-up routines stack up to their uneven bar routines.
American Apparel’s Latest Controversy: On Monday, we got a hold of images of American Apparel’s latest ads starring a 60+ gray-haired woman named Jacky, complete with obligatory crotch shot and similarly suggestive poses. We talked to Jacky about how the whole modeling gig came about–you’ll love what she had to say!
Kate Upton’s Behind The Scenes Video: Banned from YouTube and Vimeo before finally calling GQ’s website home, a behind the scenes video from Kate Upton’s GQ feature by Terry Richardson made waves when it hit the web. Not surprisingly, her boobs are the star of the show.
Fashion Memes Promote Stylish Procrastination: We rounded up our ten favorite fashion-related memes for a good Friday LOL, and now we’re asking you to revisit them because, let’s face it, they’re still hilarious.
Menswear Trends For The Gals: A good suit or blazer is just as much a necessity for men as it is for women, but that’s not where the gender bending ends. We took a look at some of the top street style trends at menswear fashion week and made them work for the girls. We wouldn’t recommend that Nazi-inspired look that’s been trending, though…
Band of Outsiders, a brand beloved by cool boys and girls alike, just upped its awesomeness by staging the “Longest Show Ever” to showcase the 2013 spring menswear collection in Paris. Jil Sander, who famously left her eponymous label in 2000, returned in 2003, and then left again in 2004, is back. Again. While the industry was upset and shocked at Raf Simons’ abrupt ousting from the house, he’s since landed himself a plum gig over at Dior. Once that was done, everyone could heave a Read more →
One of the best parts (and my favorite part) of Florence’s famed menswear trade show Pitti Immagine Uomo is the incredible street style on display. If you thought preening and peacocking was purely a women’s fashion sport you are so, so wrong. The men of Pitti show the women of Paris fashion week up. And Read more →
