It was a long evening of red carpet analysis last night, but some actresses made it worth the wait. From Gwyneth in that fall 2012 Tom Ford white cape ensemble to Jessica Chastain in regal McQueen, we’re happy some ladies took risks. While we had plenty of opinions about everyone on the runway, following along Read more →
The relationship between fashion and film is a bit incestuous. Fashion on the red carpet is always (always) a hot topic, actors are not only starring in campaigns (has anyone seen Edward Norton for Prada yet?) but walking down the runways–and then, of course, there’s the fashion that actually appears in films. So we are less than shocked when designers are inspired by Hollywood (or vice versa).
To wit, the roaring 20s were paraded down more than a few catwalks during the spring 2012 shows, and even a few pre-fall outings, proving that this inspirational era was not just an isolated incident. While this may disappoint some critics, the style remains, and it does raise the question–did the releases (looming or otherwise) of period pieces like W.E. and The Great Gatsby inspire this turn towards the flapper, or would designers have found themselves inspired by the decade anyway? To be honest, the question hardly seems the point considering how fashion and film are practically bed buddies.
The jazz age isn’t the only recent evidence of this symbiotic relationship. Consider The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, or even My Week With Marilyn. Or just let us. With the Oscars upon us tonight, we thought it was a good time to look back and the films inspiring fashion now.
While Oscar nominees probably start preparing their outfits the day they’re nominated, we pulled some dress options straight from the Fall 2012 collections just in case any nominees have been procrastinating.
Luckily for us, tons of gorgeous, Oscar-worthy dresses hit the runway for Fall 2012, from some moody options at Gucci to slinky and sexy looks from Michael Kors, Prabal Gurung, and Zac Posen. Oh, and there’s Marchesa of course.
Click through our gallery to see what dresses we’d love to see on Rooney Mara, Jessica Chastain, Meryl Streep, and all the other nominees. And be sure to tune in to the Academy Awards red carpet Sunday night to see what the nominees actually wear. You know we’ll have lots of thoughts on those come Monday morning…
LONDON-Mulberry really knows how to put on a show–from the invitation, to the decor, to the little extras they provide during the show–and this season was no exception. Held again at the Claridges ball room, the foyer and various entrance rooms were filled with floor to ceiling golden balloons in the shape of Mulberry bags, Read more →
Ever wonder what it’s like to be a professional stylist, a powerful editor or a Hollywood heavyweight? Every Friday Sunday [fashion week exception], Fashionista will ask an inspirational industry professional to fill in the blanks with their own words and photos.
Is there a career more dynamic than Kate Young‘s? From styling Teen Vogue‘s very first cover (a young Jessica Simpson cradled in the arms of then-boyfriend Nick Lachey) to dressing A-listers including Michelle Williams and Natalie Portman, the Brooklyn-based stylist has seen it all.
When I checked in with Kate early last Friday morning, our chat was nearly thwarted by my long distance phone number. “Sorry,” she apologized airily when we finally connected. “I thought you were calling from the Democratic Party to collect money.” Remind me to ditch those DC digits ASAP.
From behind the scenes as Macy’s INC’s Editor at Large to receiving personal tokens from Giambattista Valli himself, Kate filled us in on a typical week spent in her industrial Givenchy boots.

For Boy. by Band of Outsiders’ spring look book, Scott Sternberg took yet another one of our favorite actresses on a dreamy, well-dressed Los Angeles adventure and documented it with a Polaroid. We can’t think of a better subject than Michelle Williams, or a better representation of this collection or this brand.
A-Listers Reportedly Want to Wear Victoria Beckham to the Oscars: Oh Posh, you’ve come a long way from being that one Spice Girl who barely sings. Michelle Williams recently walked the red carpet in a piece from the new Victoria by Victoria Beckham line, and now it’s rumored that A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, and Cameron Diaz are eyeing the designer to outfit them for the biggest night in Hollywood. {Fashion Magazine}
Lady Gaga to Launch Social Networking Site: So her stans have a safe haven to pay due homage to their Mother Monster, Lady Gaga is developing a new “community” website. Littlemonsters.com isn’t operational yet, but you can submit your name and e-mail address to the site so you may be among the first to have access to the site once it’s up. {AOL Music}
John Galliano Out and About: Beyoncé isn’t the only celeb to re-emerge from the depths. John Galliano was spotted at his friend DJ Jeremy Healy’s 50th birthday in London. Sources say the designer was “quiet” and “reserved.” {Page Six}
There were some really memorable dresses on the red carpet at the SAG Awards last night, and we finally saw some risk-taking. Rose Byrne was amazing in her Elie Saab jumpsuit and Anna Wintour hair. And Emily Blunt made bright, almost neon green, look fresh and classy. Zoe Saldana arguably looked better than the model in her less-than-a-week-old Givenchy couture gown (and good choice to skip the nose ring). And it seems like Angelina Jolie is incapable of making bad red carpet choices. Our only question: Where was Rooney Mara last night? Does she not have a SAG card yet?

Another Sunday, another red carpet event. Click through to see all the looks from tonight’s Screen Actor’s Guild awards. We’ll keep updating as pix come in. So far our faves are Emma Stone in McQueen, Zoe Saldana in just-off-the-runway Givenchy Couture, Daenerys Targaryen Emilia Clarke (wearing ? help us out!) in Chanel (thanks @VF Fashion), Michelle Williams in Valentino (flawless), and Rose Byrne in that Elie Saab jumpsuit. Who are your favorites from the night?
We’ll have our best dressed list up in the morning. Stay tuned.
Kate Young was recently named one of “Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylists” by the Hollywood Reporter and after one look at her celebrity clientele, it’s easy to see why. She dresses Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz, to name a few, all people on whom we’ve come to rely for spot-on perfect red carpet looks. This also means that, considering it’s awards season and two of her clients are very much a part of that, Kate is super busy. Still, she found time for another new project.
She’s the latest INC Editor at Large for Spring/Summer 2012 at Macy’s. She follows inaugural INC Editor at Large Anna Dello Russo and her duties are a bit vague, as those of an ‘Editor at Large’ tend to be. What we know for sure is that they include styling the new INC collection, which you can peruse below, and a hip party thrown in her honor, which took place yesterday evening at Le Bain. We stopped by to chat with the super stylist about that gig, plus the attention celebrity stylists have been getting lately, dressing Natalie and Michelle for the Oscars and other upcoming projects, like Natalie’s next Dior campaign (!).
