Made Fashion Week’s Futuristic New App is Like Shazam For Fashion Shows

You know how it can be virtually impossible to get a good shot of a look during a runway show with your phone and then you end up tweeting disappointing blurry photos of nothing? Not anymore, thanks to a genius (seriously) new app just launched by Made (formerly MAC & Milk). The Made Fashion app, which I got to try out this morning at a blogger breakfast at Milk Studios, uses technology developed with Sonicnotify (more on that in a sec) to streamline the way designers, editors, buyers and consumers experience fashion shows and presentations. Here’s what it does, in bullet points because technology is confusing:

• While you’re at a Made fashion show, the app somehow recognizes sound waves that are inaudible to the human ear and automatically syncs your phone/iPad to what show you’re at. Seriously.

Fashion News Roundup: Models On The Big Screen, Buy H&M Online Today Only, and McQueen: Savage Beauty In London Rumor

Rumor: McQueen: Savage Beauty Going To London? A McQueen spokesperson said there have been tentative talks with some London venues but an official announcement will be made if/when they reach a decision. Though there’s no comment from the Met, this sounds like something, if not the exact exhibit, is in the works! {Telegraph}

Elle and H&M One-Day-Only E-Commerce: Starting at noon today you can buy four looks from H&M’s fall collection on Elle’s website. An H&M spokesperson said it’s a preview of their full e-commerce launching next spring. Don’t worry if it sells out though–the full fall collection hit stores in two days. {WWD}

Models In Film: Gemma Ward and Dree Hemingway Cast In Films: Ward was recently cast in the upcoming production of The Great Gatsby (fingers crossed for her as Jordan), and now there are reports that Hemingway will star in the film adaptation of Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You alongside Lucy Liu. The fall cinema lineup is looking good! {Modelinia}

Rei Kawakubo Isn’t Excited About Fashion Anymore: She told the Wall Street Journal that “there are not enough of us believing in the same thing, that there is a kind of burnout, that people just want cheap fast clothes and are happy to look like everyone else.” I somewhat agree. {The Cut}

Behind-The-Scenes Of A Vogue Nippon Photo Shoot: Editor Anna Dello Russo posted a great series of photos from a very Dolce and Gabbana-heavy shoot. Sequined pants, anyone? {Anna Dello Russo}

Rankin Told Me to Smize
Fashion Is Fun

Rankin Told Me to Smize

I’ve been on a couple photo shoots in the past, but nothing as crazy-glamorous as yesterday’s at Milk Studios. Not only did I get my makeup done and my hair blown out, but Rankin–yes, the Rankin–took my photo. You see, the legendary photographer has an exhibit opening at Milk today, as well as a new project where he’s photographing 100 people for $100 a pop from June 1-5. As a nice little perk, Milk and Rankin’s team invited editors over yesterday to get their portraits done.

Imitation Fall 2011: Tara Subkoff’s Imitation is the Real Deal

Full disclosure: we didn’t quite make it into Imitation’s show yesterday at MAC & Milk, due, once again, to the venue’s crushing methods of crowd control. After ten minutes’ worth of polite begging and pleading with the staff, who assured us that the studio’s penthouse couldn’t fit even one more person without becoming a fire hazard, we gave up hope and chose to wait for photos to pop up online.

It looks as though designer Tara Subkoff, who launched Imitation a decade ago as a concept line crafted from vintage and secondhand finds, was in a minimalist mood this season.

Fashion News Roundup: Shoulder Dysmorphia, Taylor Momsen Goes Too Far, and A Peek Inside Gilt Groupe’s Warehouse

Suffer for Fashion: Dis Magazine gets a little dis-turbing. Here’s a hypothetical look at what women would look like if we surgically “enhanced” our shoulders and collarbones to adapt to the increasing popularity of dramatic shoulders a la McQueen and Lanvin. It’s funny, creepy and sort-of NSFW. {Dis Magazine}

Gilt Groupe’s Offices Less Glamorous Than Their Image: A tour of Gilt’s gritty warehouse, located at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. {Business Insider}

How Much For the Kate Moss?: Eighteen Testino-shot photographs of the supermodel will be exhibited and up for sale next week at Phillips de Pury & Co’ s London headquarters in Victoria next week. The best part? The photos have been blown up to life-size proportions. {Telegraph}

LVMH Gets Crafty With Parsons Students

While the luxury industry keeps growing, the league of craftsmen who sew the garments, cobble the shoes and work the leather keeps shrinking. Elise & Jen Embrace the Runway

The official Fashion Week calendar just dropped and so far we’ve learned that a lot of the big guys – Ralph, Oscar, Calvin – are throwing multiple shows. But it’s the little ones we’re more interested in; it’s a very good sign when they take the plunge from presentation to runway. As of now, both Read more →
