Herb Ritts, the fashion photographer who rose to fame in the 80s and 90s, was known for his work in black and white, and for making humans look like classic sculpture. He became more popular in pop culture circles after he famously shot videos for Madonna (“Cherish,” one of the best videos ever), Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson. NOWNESS has some newly-revealed and never-before-seen shots from the photographer, who died in 2002. They feature a young Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Johnny Depp, David Bowie and Karl Lagerfeld (when he still had dark hair). NOWNESS also chatted with some notables (like Anna Wintour) who knew Ritts back in the day. Here’s what a few of them said about him: Read more »

Former Russian Vogue editrix Aliona Doletskaya was once rumored to be replacing Anna Wintour at Vogue. After she resigned as EIC of Vogue Russia in July 2010, the fashion world buzzed that she’d replace her comrade Dasha Zhukova at POP. Well, neither of those things turned out to be true, but Doletskaya has resurfaced in the world of glossies. She’s the international editor of Interview’s first two international editions: Interview Russia and Interview Germany.

The annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which is now in its 16th year, has come a long way since the first one in 1995, which wasn’t even broadcast. The 2011 show, which will be filmed tomorrow and air on November 29, promises to be the most extravagant yet with 38 big-name models, three huge musical performances and a $12 million budget. However, did you know that they started out with a budget of only $120,000? That’s a fraction of what some of their bras cost these days.

Click through to see how the shows transformed from normal girls in a normal fashion show to the celeb-filled over-produced extravaganzas they are now, including a video of the first ever show in 1995!

The backstage world before a fashion show can be a weird and wonderful place. My experience at Topshop Unique was especially so on Saturday, not for any specific lightning bolt reason, but more because of a culmination of many small experiences.

I gathered a lot of information that afternoon (and a lot of poor quality pictures) and decided it was worth a re-telling. So, put on your special all-access wristband and follow me:
