Statues and the Statuesque: A Model’s Favorite Accessory

Statues and the Statuesque: A Model’s Favorite Accessory

Fendi‘s recent resort campaign may technically be listed with only one model credit (the lovely Natasha Poly), but what about her elaborate leaning post? It may not be selling the clothes, but you can’t miss the statue which Natasha seems to be hanging off of in every shot. Statues and mannequins are not an uncommon prop in fashion photography. They do amplify qualities which are valued for the long hours of a fashion shoot. They’re consistent, they don’t tire easily, and you always know what to expect of them. On top of which, models seem to be able (and keen) to poke, prod and occasionally grope the figures at their whim. How Pygmalion. The statues don’t seem to mind too much.

Click through for a look at some of our favorite interplay between the living, breathing model and their statue playthings. They’re a better match than you’d think. The French word for model is “mannequin,” after all.

Versace for H&M: From the Runway to the Red Carpet to Mother Effing Prince, Here’s All You Need to Know About Last Night’s Spectacular

Versace for H&M: From the Runway to the Red Carpet to Mother Effing Prince, Here’s All You Need to Know About Last Night’s Spectacular

Last night Versace and H&M pulled out all the stops–and we mean all of them–to put on a runway show and party to celebrate their collaboration, which hits stores on November 19. Pier 57 was transformed into “Versace Hall” complete with a mirror-walled cocktail lounge (made to resemble Versace’s show space in Milan) and a wood paneled runway in a pattern that seemed to mimic Versace’s Greek fret motif (and also ensured everyone got a front row seat).

Everyone except Anna Wintour was there (and maybe she was and we just didn’t see her?): performers Prince and Nicki Minaj (wearing an enormous green wig and sequined Versace for H&M) sat to watch the show; celebs, all dressed in h-to-t Versace for H&M, included Blake Lively, Uma Thurman, Jessica Alba, Chace Crawford, Chloe Moretz, Jennifer Hudson and Alan Cumming; there were designers aplenty from Joseph Altuzarra to Alexander Wang to Christopher Kane; in keeping with the collection’s ’90s theme, ’90s supermodels Linda Evangelista and Helena Christensen were there; and there were too many stylists and editors and socialites to count.

“It looks good,” Minaj told us about the collection as she walked the red carpet. “All the stuff they brought to my room today I was like, ‘I’m keeping that!’ Minaj confessed that she fell in her platform Versaces during the filming for her Superbass video but she said, “I’m not taking them off, fashion is pain, and I’m keeping them on, and Superbass went on to be such a big song, so maybe Versace’s good luck.”

Carine Roitfeld’s Full Fall Campaign For Barneys Revealed

Well here you go: Barneys‘ full fall campaign starring Carine Roitfeld has been released on WWD. And we didn’t even have to wait a whole day to see it! Carine isn’t the only Roitfeld in the campaign. Her progeny Vladmir and Julia also share the spotlight, along with model Natasha Poly.

Of course, the whole clan looks gorgeous and very Carine-ified, decked out in nearly all black Rick Owens, Givenchy and The Row and shot by Mario Sorrenti. Nice work, Miss Roitfeld!

Before They Were Supermodels They Were Super Adorable Kids
Fashion Is Fun

Before They Were Supermodels They Were Super Adorable Kids

There’s just something inherently enjoyable about looking at old baby photos. It’s fun to see what people looked like when they were littler people. I saw this fancy gif on Fashin of all these supermodels morphing into their little kid selves and thought I’d troll the fashion webz for photos of today’s top models before they were catwalk-strutting, glossy-page gracing, campaign-landing beauties.

Take a look.
