Nicola Formichetti

Richard Chai -- Love - Front Row - Fall 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

We’re still waiting for our favorite up-and-coming rapper/fashion muse Azealia Banks to make her fashion week debut, but yesterday morning we got one step closer to her via her new fashion pal Nicola Formichetti, with whom she shares a birthday.

Formichetti is perhaps best known for his roles as Mugler‘s creative director and Lady Gaga’s stylist, but over the past few weeks, he seems to have also taken the “212″ singer under his wing. As we’ve ascertained through Twitter, he styled her for a V shoot and her forthcoming video for “Liquorice.” Banks also provided the soundtrack for his menswear show in Paris.

We chatted with Formichetti backstage at his friend Richard Chai’s show yesterday. Here’s what he had to say about how he and Azealia ended up working together, why it was meant to be, what to expect from the ‘Liquorice’ video and whether or not their collaboration will be ongoing. He seemed to really enjoy talking about her.

Lady Gaga to Launch Social Networking Site: So her stans have a safe haven to pay due homage to their Mother Monster, Lady Gaga is developing a new “community” website. Littlemonsters.com isn’t operational yet, but you can submit your name and e-mail address to the site so you may be among the first to have access to the site once it’s up. {AOL Music}

It’s becoming pretty clear to us that Azealia Banks, the 20-year-old Laguardia HS grad whose dirty lyrics (and genuine talent) have everyone’s attention, is poised to take the fashion world by storm as well. In fact, in a remarkably short time (basically one trip to Paris), she already has. When Nicola Formichetti tweeted at her a couple of weeks ago (and made us wonder if she was the next Lady Gaga), that was just the tip of the iceberg. Read more »

Mugler m RF12 0263

PARIS–There is simply no doubt that Mugler creative director Nicola Formichetti is very much a man of the now and thus, the future. Since his appointment to Mugler back in September 2010 to work with in-house designers Romain Kremer and Sébastien Peigné for the men’s and women’s collections respectively, Mr. Formichetti has brought the real-time technology of social media to the service of fashion. He calls it ‘Fashion Without Borders.’ With Formichetti at the helm there is hype before the collection showings like a Gaga pre-release soundtrack, or a fashionable porn released on XTube.

Tonight’s show in a loft with a simple black sparking panel as a backdrop near the Gare de L’Est was low key compared to recent Mugler outings. In lieu of new music or video teases, he opted for a net broadcast of the preparation and mood boards of the men’s fall collection. That meant a virtual design atelier studio accessible for those obsessed with behind-the-scenes action. “Fashion seemed a bit ‘warmer’ in the past, more personal and not so removed,” Mr. Formichetti explained.

Azealia Banks is getting a lot of buzz lately, and we can see why: Take an adorable girl, add serious talent and completely filthy lyrics and you’re bound to cause a sensation.

But while her music sensibility (and the fact that they went to the same high school) has prompted loads of Nicki Minaj comparisons, Banks is actually following in the footsteps of another mega-star: Lady Gaga. Or, at least when it comes to fashion anyway. The up-and-comer recently tweeted, “Shooting the video for Liquorice in Paris. Going to be epic!! @formichetti,” and it does indeed seem that Banks has tapped Gaga stylist/Mugler creative director Nicola Formichetti to help style/creative direct her new video, reports Oh No They Didn’t. After a little Twitter sleuthing, there may be even bigger things in store (like a V editorial or cover, perhaps?):

We first heard back in August about Lady Gaga‘s upcoming holiday collaboration with Barneys, in which a floor at the legendary Madison Avenue store will be turned into Gaga’s Workshop. A lot more details have finally been released, and it’s going to be like a modern day rendering of The Nightmare Before Christmas, with a large dose of Gaga kitsch and drama mixed in.

Gaga’s Workshop at Barneys will officially open at 11:59pm on November 21 and will be open through January 2.

The past four days have been a non-stop party for a lot of fashion people here in New York. And those Halloween parties have been well-documented. The Tribeca Grand’s Overlook Hotel party, the Boom Boom Room’s fete and last night’s V party hosted by Terry Richardson drew the most fashion-heavy crowds and, as we all know, fashion people like to dress up. They also seem to like obscure references–many of their costumes were tough to identify, but still fun to look at. So, from Alexa Chung to Joan Smalls to Marc Jacobs, here are a bunch of fashion people in their Halloween best!

Lady Gaga has been the face of MAC‘s Viva Glam campaign for the past year–her lipstick is a pale nude color–and she’s been working on a fashion project with Nicola Formichetti for the cosmetics brand. Back in March, Gaga put out a call for fans to submit head shots of themselves which would be incorporated into a “masterpiece” of a dress. (In a fit of Manic Panic-induced craziness, I actually submitted a picture of myself with pink hair. Not sure I made the cut, though.)

Watch Gaga float and stare dreamily, and then release a tiny version of herself which flies away. All while wearing the tallest shoes I think she’s worn to date. Read more »

As you may have heard (or undoubtedly noticed if you’ve ever passed by the main drags of Fifth Avenue or West 34th in the past year), Uniqlo is preparing to open two new stores in Manhattan. An 89,000 square foot global flagship on Fifth Avenue and 53rd St. opens this Friday, followed by a slightly more modest 65,000 square foot flagship on 34th between Fifth and Sixth Aves. next Friday.

I chatted briefly with U.S. CEO Shin Odake, who had flown in from Japan for the launch. With the economy where it is, now may seem like an unlikely time to open the company’s biggest store ever. Odake disagrees. “We don’t focus on the fact that the economy is struggling; we are more focused on the fact that the U.S. is the biggest market in the world so since we came across this real estate, we felt this was great timing.” In addition to the 34th street store, Odake is currently looking to expand into other cities in the U.S. “Our vision is to be the number one retailer in the world and by 2020, we want to do 50 million U.S. dollars worldwide. Eventually, we want to open a store in every city.”

In terms of merchandise, having successfully made a name for themselves with cashmere sweaters and designer collabs, Uniqlo’s current focus is innovative fabrics, like Heattech, which they are promoting for the launch ($12.90 down from $19.90 for a long-sleeve tee). To develop the fabrics, they partner with select manufacturers, like Japan-based Toray Industries, who actually have a team of people working out of Uniqlo’s offices. “We don’t buy fabric just because that’s a trendy fabric for the season or the prices are attractive; we want to create a long-term partnership with fabric brands.” And of course, what’s on everyone’s minds: what, if anything, will replace Jil Sander’s +J collaboration?

Mischa Gets Beefy: Literally. Mischa Barton posed with raw steaks for photographer Tyler Shields. We don’t know why. It’s weird. {Tyler Shields}

How’s this for a mind fuck: Nicola Formichetti has designed virtual clothes for a three-dimensional avatar, based on Mugler model Rico Genest, for a video game called Eve. Says the designer: “I mean if you could make your own avatar, and if you could dress yourself up, I think people will be buying virtual goods.” So now we’ll be expected to drop wads of cash on garments that don’t actually exist? {Dazed Digital}

Here it is: Lady Gaga’s short film for Mugler (or at least part of it), which debuted at Nicola Formichetti‘s show in Paris yesterday. We’ll have our review and images up shortly, but for now, check out a gap-toothed Gaga swinging her multi-colored hair around while talking about how her heart sometimes feels black, but also sometimes rainbow. Then, she warns us not to anger the Mugler woman because she will eat you. With shiny, gapped teeth. Read more »
