Now There’s a Backlash Against the Ralph Lauren ‘Made in China’ Olympic Uniform Backlash

Last week Ralph Lauren upset politicians across the country when it came to light that the Olympic opening ceremony uniforms donated by the brand were made in China; at the apex of the outrage was Senator Harry Reid, who declared that they should be burned. There’s been a cooling off period over the weekend with writers coming out to defend Ralph Lauren and also uncovering many other brands who are providing Olympic gear that isn’t manufactured in the country whose athletes will be wearing it.

Olympic Legends Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Jackie Joyner Kersee Unveil Nike’s Team USA Track and Field Uniforms

On June 14 in the West Village, despite the fact the entire neighborhood was on lockdown due to Sarah Jessica Parker and Anna Wintour’s Obama fundraiser nearby, Nike unveiled their new track and field uniforms for Team USA with the help of some marquis names of their own: Olympic legends Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner Kersee and Michael Johnson (he of the golden shoes).
The new uniforms are red, a departure from the traditional blue, a color that says power, according to Kersee. “Whatever lane we’re in we’re going to pop, we’re going to power off those blocks and hey, here we come team USA,” she said. Lewis added that the color will pop on TV, especially in high definition.

There are lots of new changes to the uniform in addition to the shift to red.

Kanye West’s Nike Sneakers Sell on eBay for Nearly $90,000

His designs may not be such a hit with the fashion crowd but Kanye West‘s name can still command a huge price tag–when it comes to sneakers, anyway.

Kanye’s new kicks for Nike, the Air Yeezy 2, don’t come out until Saturday but some resourceful people have somehow gotten their hands on the much-hyped shoes and already listed them on eBay—for a lot of money.

Most of the sneaks are being listed for anywhere between $2,000-$7,000, but one pair–yes, one pair–fetched the mindblowingly high price of $89,100, TMZ is reporting.

Classic Sneaker Brands Get a Fashion Makeover: Here are 7 Cute New Collabs to Shop Now

Sneakers are having a moment–and not just in wedge form. Classic sneaker brands like Keds, Bensimon, Nike and others are infiltrating the fashion world via collaborations with hip designers, brands, retailers and people.

These collabs have succeeded in doing what collaborations do best–bringing a little more relevance to brands who’ve been around for a while and in many cases opening them up to new audiences. Just yesterday, PF Flyers launched the latest video in their Authentic American Style series, in which NYC fashiony photographer/it girl Rachel Chandler talks about her style and shows us how cool she looks in shoes from the heritage athletic footwear brand, which has been around since the ’30s. The day before that, J. Crew and Madewell debuted their latest casual sneaker collabs with Soludos and Bensimon, respectively, in cute, springy colors.

The 25 Richest Billionaires in Fashion & Retail: Who Made the Cut?

Every year Forbes puts out a list of the world’s wealthiest billionaires to make us all realize just how poor we really are.

This year’s list is topped by Carlos Slim Helu & family, followed closely by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. But who in the fashion and retail industry made the cut? Some of the rankings may surprise you–Zara‘s founder and part-owner Amancio Ortega is the world’s fifth richest man across all industries, outpacing H&M’s Stefan Persson by over $10 billion, and luxury label magnates like Miuccia Prada, Giorgio Armani and Chanel’s Alain & Gerard Wertheimer by over $20 billion. (See what we mean about feeling poorer already?)

While some of the rankings are no surprise at all–for the second year in a row LVMH’s Bernard Arnault is the richest man in the fashion industry with a net worth of $41 billion, making him the fourth richest man in the world, and the #1 richest guy in Europe.

Read on for the full list of the 25 richest billionaires in the fashion and retail industry:

Sneaker Fanatics Camp Out for a Week To Score Nike’s New Shoe

Would you sleep on the street for a week to score one of these shoes? Well, about 80 sneaker fanatics plan to do just that, setting up camp outside a Manhattan Foot Locker on W. 33, reports the New York Daily News.

Apparently, the motley crew of sneaker freaks arrived on Saturday, and have been waiting outside ever since, in order to snap up one of Nike‘s new Foamposite Galaxy shoe. To be clear, the shoe does not arrive stores until Friday. Yep, as in almost a week away from when they began camping out. Whoa.

Check Out Nike’s Full ‘Make Yourself’ Ad Campaign Shot by Annie Leibovitz

Reports surfaced in June that Nike had chosen Annie Leibovitz to photograph the fall 2011 ad campaign and we just got a hold of all the images. The campaign stars seven elite female athletes–Nike’s “Make Yourself” team. Nike launched “Make Yourself” last year with the intention of inspiring and motivating women to “achieve their goals and become the best ‘versions’ of themselves.” It would basically be difficult not to feel motivated by these images of impossibly physically fit ladies working out in sports bras, including USA track and field Olympian Allyson Felix, Chinese tennis player Li Na, Algerian-French dancer Sofia Boutella, British hurdler Perri Shakes-Drayton, Russian-born tennis star Maria Sharapova, USA goalkeeper Hope Solo and Australian surfer Laura Enever. Like, if I had a membership to a gym, I would definitely go work out at it right now. Maybe I’ll just download one of Nike’s iPhone workouts instead. Click through for all the images.
