Fashion News Roundup: Annie Leibovitz for Nike, FHM Apologizes to Andrej Pejic and a Dry Shampoo Website

Annie Leibovitz Shoots Nike Women’s Ad: The Nike Make Yourself campaign started last year as a girl power type promotion for women’s athleticism and sportswear; this year, they tapped Leibovitz’s recognizable epic photography for the ads, which star several female athletes including Maria Shirapova, dancer Sofia Boutella, and surfer Laura Enever. {WWD}

Jill Abramson Named New York Times Executive Editor: Abramson has been managing editor since 2003 and is now, with today’s replacement of Bill Keller, the first ever female executive editor of the newspaper. {NYTimes}

FHM Apologizes to Andrej Pejic: The men’s mag named the gender bending model the 98th Sexiest Woman… but also called him ‘thing’ in a truly insensitive bit of copy. The piece has since been taken down and an apology was issued, although it’s honestly a little pathetic given the offense. {Styleite}

Last Night’s Party: Nike for Liberty of London Launch Party

LONDON–We showed you the styles, now it was time to toast their anticipated arrival.

Last night, Liberty designated their 2nd floor to an elaborate installation space, marking Nike’s third collaboration with its signature house prints. The soirée kicked off with cocktails and a nineties hip-hop soundtrack, as industry sportswear enthusiasts and the like gathered around a gigantic basketball hoop chandelier in the store’s central atrium. Displaying the three styles–Air Force 1, Blazers and Dunks–in five different print stories derived from Liberty of London’s extensive print archives, some also hung in golden orbits above decadent purple carpets.

Nike Kicked My Ass With Its New iPhone Workout–But I Looked Good Doing It

I love working out. There have been times in my life where I’ve been at the gym six days per week. Right now, it’s more like three days, if I’m lucky.

But I’m not very coordinated, and I don’t typically take group classes. (Although Core Fusion at Exhale Spa has won my heart.) Yet when the sneaker behemoth invited me to test out their new Nike Training Club iPhone app in a session led by Nike Master Trainer Marie Purvis and US soccer goalie Hope Solo, I was game. Mostly because I’m getting married in three months and want to look my best. Also because I had a feeling we’d be outfitted in some pretty nice kit, and I was right.

As we entered Nike’s space at Chelsea Piers, each session participant was given an iPod Touch, which we used to scan bar codes on the gallery-like walls. The bar codes transformed into short videos on the screen of the iPod, promoting the Nike 360 concept. Of course, the woman in the film looked incredible–amazing body, beautiful hair and skin–but it was her clothes and shoes that I couldn’t help but coveting.

Fashion News Roundup: Karl’s Crazy Fashion Island, ADR’s Rules to Wearing Fruit on Your Head and Fashion’s Night In

A Women’s Right To Headpieces: This fantastic blog post by Vogue Nippon editor Anna Dello Russo includes a photo montage of the fruit-inspired headwear she’s been sporting lately, the frenzy around which has inspired her to explain her 10 RULES to wearing headpieces. Our favorite pieces of advice: “4. Try the LOOK! At the end you have to look pretty in your face.

” and “9. Don’t take off the hat when you get inside,
it’s part of your LOOK!

” {ADR}

Matthew Williamson Diffuses: Diffusion lines are all the rage these days and now British designer Matthew Williamson is no exception. The collection, which will sit next to the likes of Marc by Marc and See by Chloe, is set to debut next Februrary. “It will carry all the essence of the Williamson woman but it’ll be for her younger sister and at a lower price point,” said Williamson. Sounds good to us. {Vogue UK}

Fashion Island: It looks like Karl Lagerfeld and his fabulous friends will have somewhere other than Saint-Tropez to take fabulous breaks from their fabulous lives. Check out Isla Moda (yes that’s really what it’s called), a man-made fashion-centric island off the coast of Dubai that Karl himself is helping design. There are now renderings of the island and s*** looks crazy. {NY Mag}

Teenage Dream: Katy Perry will be performing live at this year’s Victoria’s Secret Angels fashion show. The show, which airs November 30 at 10pm on CBS, will be a whole to do including a red carpet, model profiles and behind-the-scenes exclusives. There will also of course be a $2 million bra worn by Adriana Lima. We hope the show also includes those Victoria’s Secret “halloween” costumes and that Katy Perry wears something ridiculous. {Victoria’s Secret}

Fashion News Roundup: Bedbugs Hit Fifth Ave, Taylor Momsen Is In Her Underwear (Again) and On Fire, and Giles Deacon to NYFW

Bedbugs Swoosh: The bed bugs are back (were they every really gone?). Their latest victim? The 95,000 square-foot Nike store on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. While Nike has released a press release addressing the bedbug problem, none of the signs outside let passersby know that the store has been infested with bedbugs. Sneaky. {The Cut}

Taylor Momsen Is on Fire, Literally: Taylor Momsen and her band The Pretty Reckless have released their new video for ‘Makes Me Wanna Die.’ In it, Momsen strips down to her underwear while walking through bits of burning debris and leaping flames. Shocking. {Huffington Post}

Giles Comes To NYFW: Maybe. Following the steps of other UK designers such as Preen and William Tempest, Giles Deacon wants to show his eponymous label in New York next season rather than London. {Fashionologie}

Long Nguyen Likens Nike’s Sneakers to Lanvin’s Dresses, and Means It

Long Nguyen Likens Nike’s Sneakers to Lanvin’s Dresses, and Means It

Fashionista contributor Long Nguyen is the co-founder/style director of Flaunt.

It was just another mid-August weekend, when most New Yorkers seek refuge in the Hamptons, Fire Island or upstate along the Hudson, where the sea, sun and cool breeze surely beat the persistent humidity. Yet for the city’s basketball fans, Manhattan was the place to be these past few days.

That’s because the Global Community Cup visited New York. A bit like the World Cup of basketball, GCC held games at Madison Square Garden–the USA team played France and China played Puerto Rico at Madison Square Garden.

Next the GCC will head to Madrid, where the USA will take on Spain.

But what’s this got to do with fashion?

Liberty of London is Doing Just Fine

Everyone’s mad for Liberty of London these days, from Target shoppers to Nike collectors. While 2008 was a rough year–the company lost about $5 million, it actually earned around $150,000 in 2009. That’s according to the Brit department store’s annual report, which was released today. That might sound like a measley sum, but remember, that’s Read more →

Match Point

Fashion and tennis have always shared a special bond: Coco Chanel, Lacoste, Anna and Roger. Today marks the beginning of the most fashionable, in our opinion, of all the Grand Slams – Wimbledon. It must be noted that I am a huge tennis fan and much like Ms. Wintour, I have much affection for Mr. Read more →
