Plus-Size Model Editorial Says Runway Models ‘Meet the Physical Criteria for Anorexia’

Models–their size, their age, even their gender–are provoking a lot of polarizing discussion lately. And plus-size model advocates (and their “real-woman” counterparts) are adding food for thought–or fuel to the fire, depending on your perspective. In its January issue, Plus Model Magazine just published an editorial lensed by Victoria Janashvili and featuring plus-size model Katya Read more →

It’s Here! Kate Moss, Lara Stone, Joan Smalls and More Get Naked for the 2012 Pirelli Calendar, Shot by Mario Sorrenti

The Pirelli calendar–otherwise known as the classiest pin-up girly calendar ever–is an annual tradition for those lucky few VIPs who find it in their mailboxes. It’s traditionally shot by world-renowned fashion photographers (Karl Lagerfeld last year, Mario Testino, Annie Leibovitz, Bruce Weber, Terry Richardson…the list goes on and on) and features A-list models and actresses. This morning we attended a press conference to preview the 2012 Pirelli calendar, and it left us feeling very warm and um, tingly.

First of all, the calendar was shot in Corsica by Mario Sorrenti, who was in attendance and who is exceptionally easy on the eyes (he’s a former model). Second of all, every single model in the calendar is as naked as the day she was born, and we were treated to a 20-minute long behind-the-scenes video documenting the shoots of all 12 models. Suffice it to say there was a lot of glistening flesh (in almost every scene an assistant is seen spritzing down the models), and a lot of come-hither looks. Here are the ladies who the lucky recipients will get to ogle in 2012: Isabeli Fontana, Natasha Poly, Saskia de Brauw, Lara Stone, Joan Smalls, Guinevere Van Seenus, Malgosia, Edita Vilkevicute, Kate Moss, Milla Jovovich, Margareth Made, and Rinko Kikuchi.

Paulina Porizkova on Sexual Harassment in Modeling: “When a 16-Y-O Girl is Flattered by a Man Pulling out His Penis, That’s Noteworthy’

Modeling has always been a profession that elicits curiosity and courts controversy. A new documentary, called About Face, is going to give us a glimpse into the experiences of a group of supermodels from the 70s and 80s, and it sure doesn’t sound like it’s going to be pretty.

The film, which premieres at Sundance in January, will be available to the masses on HBO in the summer, WWD is reporting. The movie is definitely not a shiny, happy portrayal of modeling. Vanity Fair photog Timothy Greeenfield-Sanders shot the film to take a look at the “models as survivors, blessed with beauty, yet condemned by society’s less-than-tolerant view of aging and its relentless celebration of youth.”

American Apparel is At It Again, Reveals Topless Ads for Swimwear

American Apparel is At It Again, Reveals Topless Ads for Swimwear

Oh, American Apparel. You are such a tease. One minute your models are bearing all, the next they’re covered up. You give us a topless model on horseback, or a girl with her pubes showing through lace panties, and then a photo of founder Dov Charney’s childhood darkroom and a story about his struggle with dyslexia. Aw. You keep us on our toes! And we like that.

But what most folks seem to love (or love to hate) are American Apparel’s more provocative, more gratuitously naked ads, like this one. It fits nicely into the brand’s canon of provocative ads, which dates back to 1995.

Another important question: how does one wear this bathing suit without flashing everyone?

Check out the full ad, out today. Apparently there are many topless poses one can assume in this bathing suit.

American Apparel’s Most Provocative Ads from 1995 to the Present: An Evolution

American Apparel’s Most Provocative Ads from 1995 to the Present: An Evolution

American Apparel’s ads have always been provocative but lately they’ve been grabbing headlines. Namely, the ad for sheer lace panties that showed the model’s pubic hair seemed to generate a lot of buzz. And then it seemed Dov Charney and crew did an about face–the next ad out showed none of the “t” and “a” that we’ve come to expect from American Apparel and instead featured some photos of founder Dov Charney‘s childhood darkroom and a story about his struggle with dyslexia.

When we asked which American Apparel you preferred–modest and personal or unabashedly naked and provocative–the response was clearly in favor of American Apparel’s porn-ier side. Or as one commenter wrote, “I don’t really care about this guy’s childhood, just give me more pubes…”

So we listened and we’re giving you what you want. A look back at American Apparel’s most provocative ads through the years. Unsurprisingly, last month wasn’t the first time the hipster retailer released an ad showing pubic hair.

Can Pubes Save American Apparel From Bankruptcy? The Hipster Retailer Backs Away From More Conservative Advertising

Remember when it seemed like American Apparel was toning down their notoriously porn-y ads? There was that ad that featured Dov Charney working on his laptop in bed flanked by his creative directors. Then there were those illustrated ads, that showed frontal nudity and pubes galore, but the girls were, you know, CARTOONS. We figured Read more →
