Cosmoprof Report: The Seedy Underbelly of the Feather Hair Extension Industry Exposed, Plus What You’ll be Sticking in your Hair this Fall

I spent last weekend in Las Vegas at Cosmoprof, which is an industry conference where small beauty brands can get hooked up with buyers, distributors, and salon owners. Meeting and talking to entrepreneurs is one of the best parts of my job, and I was eager to speak to them about their impressions of the industry and to scout out trends-in-the-making. There was tons of great stuff, which I’ll be reporting on all week.

I came upon the booth for Hair Flairs, a small company that sells feather and tinsel hair extensions. The creative director, Trina Marr, was more than willing to dish about all the controversy in the hair feathering industry. Turns out there’s a lot.

L’Wren Scott Launches Handbags While Getting Acquainted With Some Bloggers

L’Wren Scott is all about the details: the placement of a hemline, the click of a handbag. The stylist-turned-designer doesn’t do anything haphazardly, so it was no surprise that she decided to launch her handbag line by introducing it to a group of 20 or so bloggers on Wednesday morning. (Barneys, who has the exclusive on the bags this season, hosted the breakfast.) Because as everyone from Proenza Schouler to Reed Krakoff knows, it’s really The Bag Snob–the be-all-end-all of accessories blogs–who makes or breaks your collection.

Along with the opportunity to get to know the Lula–Scott‘s introductory piece, available in three practical sizes and a variety of colors and skins–we were lucky enough to get to know Scott, who not only did a Q&A with O creative director Adam Glassman, but also answered questions from the audience. Given that her runway show is as exclusive as Tom Ford‘s–seriously, like, less than a hundred people are invited–this was a real treat. Especially since she’s such a charismatic and sincere person. The big takeaways:

Fashion News Roundup: Andrej Pejic On His Censored Dossier Cover, the Total Cost of Oprah’s Favs, and a Chanel Bag Made of Beef Jerky

Andrej Pejic Speaks Out About His Dossier Cover Controversy: “I think the question really isn’t the gender of the person on the cover, it’s whether it’s porn or it’s art. And clearly, it’s art, so art really should not be censored in a democratic society…But, you know, I have just been named the 98th sexiest woman in the world, so it makes the situation a little bit confusing for them.” {The Cut}

Adding Up Oprah’s Favorite Things: Tracie Egan Morrissey had the genius idea to tally up the total cost of Oprah’s Favorite Things, the prizes she gives away during her holiday bonanza. The price tag? A whopping $23.8 million. {Jezebel}

Prada Is Worth $15 Billion: The company had record sales in 2010 with a 150.4% surge in profits, and have totaled up its estimated worth in preparation for their stock exchange debut–they will make the list in Hong Kong on June 17, followed by London, Milan, and New York. {WWD subscription required}

Beef Jerky Chanel: Someone made a Chanel 2.55 out of beef jerky and it actually looks really good. {Racked}

Oprah’s Other Magazine Covers

Oprah Winfrey might be known for gracing every single cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, but over the years she’s lent her likeness to several publications, from Vogue (“If you want to be on the cover of Vogue and [editor-in-chief] Anna Wintour says you have to be down to 150 lbs. – that’s what you gotta do,” she told People once) to Jet (a still from the “wagon of fat” episode). Click through for a round-up of our favorite non-O Oprah covers.

It will stock special collaboration items from Pamela Love, Nasir Mazhar, Meadham Kirchhoff, and Ann-Sofie Back and will be located…somewhere near a florist? {Racked}

Oprah’s Favorite Fashion Things, Then and Now

Oprah’s Favorite Fashion Things, Then and Now

Oprah‘s final “Favorite Things” episode aired this past week. If you haven’t watched the crowd reactions already, you should (or check out audience reactions from the whole last season on this awesome tumblr). Everyone went nuts. Of course, if I was being gifted a 2012 Volkswagon Beetle, an iPad, and some Le Creuset cookware, I’d be doing a happy dance too.

Having your product on Oprah‘s “Favorite Things” things list is akin to having your book chosen for her book club–meaning it will sell. And often, Oprah’s favorite stuff is beauty and fashion-related (but the fashion tends to be on the comfort-end–nothing wrong with that). Previously Oprah-endorsed favorite things like Spanx and Uggs became ubiquitous best-sellers after earning a spot on the “Favorite Things” list, according to AOL’s Small Business site. Her “Favorite Things” episode has even saved some companies from the brink of bankruptcy.

So we decided to take a look at this year’s fashion and beauty-related “favorite things” as well as “favorite things” of years past (yes, J.Lo’s velour sweatsuit was on the list in ’02). Are any of them your favorite things too?

Fashion News Roundup: Courtney Love is Being Sued, Lea T. on Oprah and Karl Shot a Calendar

Jacob the Jeweler is suing Courtney Love: Celebrities failing to return borrowed goods to designers is a pretty common occurrence, but rarely are those celebrities sued. Granted, it probably isn’t usually $114,000 worth of jewelry. Love‘s excuse? She lost ‘em. {Huffington Post}

Karl’s Calendar: Another fashion-y calendar will soon be released for 2011. It was shot by Karl Lagerfeld and stars Isabeli Fontana, Heidi Mount, Natasha Poly and others. One photo leaked from the Greek and Roman mythology-inspired shoot and it appears to be clothing optional. {Fashionologie}

Oprah Books a Model: Lea T., transgendered model and muse to Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, is scheduled to film a segment on Oprah to air in February. We’re not sure what the segment is about, but we’ll be setting our DVRs. {Elle.com}

Fashion News Roundup: Thom Browne Womenswear Revealed, Barney’s Holiday Windows Will Be Food-Themed and Oprah’s Giving Carson Kressley a Show

I want to be a Thom Browne girl: Surprise?! As far as we know, this is the first look at Thom Browne’s upcoming line for women. It of course it’s amazing. {Jak & Jil}

Google’s Trend Tracker: You can now track consumer interest in trends or brands on Google. The company, which has become increasingly fashion-conscious, demonstrates in their retail advertising blog how search queries can be traced and graphed over time and based on location. For example, most fashion trend-related searches grow in places like New York and Los Angeles and then spread throughout the rest of the country. Pretty cool. {Google via Blackbook}

Kate Moss is just like us: She got bored and cut her own bangs–with kitchen scissors. {Fashionologie}
