Remember Angelina Jolie’s right leg on Oscar night? Of course you do. She thrust it out of the thigh-high slit on her Versace gown all the way down the red carpet, and then on stage while presenting an award. It was so obviously weird that the winners of said award–the writers of The Descendants who won for best adapted screenplay–all mocked her immediately during their acceptance speech. Following the Oscars, Jolie’s right leg went viral, and spawned a Twitter account, countless Tumblrs, and fun games like Jolie legbombing–pasting Jolie’s right leg in a photo.
Jolie has finally addressed the phenomenon of her right leg, and in typically Jolie-fashion, she kind of makes you feel bad about yourself for even thinking it was a thing.
“I honestly didn’t pay attention to it,” she told the Huffington Post. “You know what I mean? I don’t watch those TV shows and if I go online and see something about myself, I don’t click on it. And the people I surround myself with don’t really talk about that kind of stuff. [Laughs]. I heard something, but I didn’t pay any attention. It’s as simple as being a woman picking a dress you like and having a night, and not really thinking about anything else.”

For most people getting ready for an event takes a few hours at most. But when you’re a star on the magnitude of Gwyneth Paltrow, and the event is the Oscars, months of time, effort and politics can go into picking the right dress and ensuring the night goes off without a sartorial hitch. Today on Goop, Gwynnie gives us a glimpse at the months-long process that went into her looking fab in Tom Ford at the Oscars.
Of course, the journey to the Best Dressed List begins with a dress. For Gwyneth, the responsibility of finding the perfect Oscars gown falls squarely on the shoulders of her stylist Elizabeth Saltzman, who says the job is a “long process that begins the moment when the nominees are announced and doesn’t end until the moment she steps onto the red carpet.” Saltzman starts by calling certain designers (she usually works with two or three) and seeing if they have anything special in mind for the big event and making sure they aren’t dressing anyone else too similarly. The designer, in turn, will send over sketches of possible gown options and Saltzman will “gently try to make tweaks that [she knows] will work for [her] particular client,” keeping in mind her client’s body, coloring, and confidence level.
The red carpet is a big deal.
No, really! For us, it’s a big deal because we love the clothes, the celebs, and any chance for a sartorial train wreck. But what we really mean by “big deal” is that for the designers, having a starlet wear your frock on the red carpet and spouting your name to every news outlet that asks “who are you wearing?” is major. The amount of publicity that a designer gets from such high-wattage stars wearing their creations is priceless–so priceless that sometimes they pay big bucks for deals with the lovely ladies, as the New York Post reported last week. Jennifer Lopez and the Nip Slip That Wasn’t: Despite Twitter buzz to the contrary, Jennifer Lopez’s stylist Mariel Haenn insists that a nip slip Sunday night just wasn’t possible for J. Lo. “While the dress did give the illusion of sheer-ness, joke’s on everyone who wishes they saw something!” scoffs the stylist, adding that the gown had “special cups” to prevent any slips. {People}
