Pat McGrath

Jessica Stam is the new face of the CoverGirl LipPerfection print ads, and a few weeks ago we got to sit at a spring trend mini-seminar with makeup guru Pat McGrath and Stam. McGrath is fresh off her first-ever movie gig, helping to transform Rooney Mara into Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And now she’s prepping to do the makeup looks for 24 fashion shows in New York and Milan, but we got to catch up with her before the madness starts.

CoverGirl is releasing some videos highlighting their new spring beauty launches which feature McGrath giving some how-tos, with Jessica Stam as muse. Fashionista has the second such video exclusively today, and we also had the opportunity to ask McGrath all our pressing lipstick application questions. Check out Stam’s transformation below, and also get answers to such complicated issues as: When should you use a lip brush?

Harry Brant is a 15-year-old fashion lover and man about town. You might know him as the son of supermodel Stephanie Seymour and publisher Peter Brant. We first met him at a Miu Miu Musing last year, wherein he and his older brother Peter (II) nearly upstaged host Andre Leon Talley. We were smitten. He’s only 15 but he knows his shit. And he’s hilarious. We asked him to regale us with his tales from last week’s couture shows (when he’s there he stays with Alaïa). Enjoy.

I launched my couture journey in the most glamour appropriate way I could think of: Dinner with Pat McGrath. We went to the uber chic Vietnamese restaurant Tong Yen (a Paris must). Firstly, I would just like to apologize to the other diners at the restaurant. Our dinner involved tears from laughter, fake engagement rings, and of course, dual personalities. It was DIVINE, like all outings with the make up goddess.

The next day I got up and went to the Versace show. I am using the term got up very loosely because I never actually went to sleep. I got a text from Pat at 5am (she’s a 5am-9pm kind of girl) inviting me to go hang out backstage at Versace. I don’t care what time of day is–if someone invites you to hang out at Versace couture backstage, you go!

Did model-of-the-moment Karlie Kloss suddenly become the new face of CoverGirl over the weekend? Or is there yet another fake ad campaign swirling the internets. This image was posted on Fashin today and, at first glance, is pretty convincing as a CoverGirl print ad, with a glammed-up Karlie and black-and-white shots of Pat McGrath doing her makeup. Still, we were skeptical. Read more »

Karlie Kloss has had a stellar year–she walked in a gazillion shows in September (including closing Dior in that bum-revealing look), covered many magazines, and took her first bow as a Victoria’s Secret Angel. She’s capping off her year with yet another Vogue cover, this time on Vogue Italia’s December issue. Read more »

Jessica Stam for Covergirl

Considering that Pat McGrath is the originator of a lot of runway makeup trends, you definitely sit up and listen when she decides to talk about those trends. (She was responsible for the looks at Givenchy, Prada, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and Balenciaga this past season, to name just a few.) On Friday afternoon, CoverGirl held an event featuring Pat McGrath (CoverGirl’s Global Creative Design Director) and the brand’s new face, model Jessica Stam, who was perfection in a lace dress and a full-on face of glamorous makeup. The purpose of the gathering? To discuss the beauty trends from the recent spring 2012 runways and how mere mortals can recreate these looks and make them work for real life.

Here are ten tips we picked up, from Pat’s secret for perfect brows, to how to do a metallic lip:

We got a blurry look at Rooney Mara’s Vogue cover this weekend, and we told you it was coming last month. Now Vogue.com‘s posted the real actual cover, as well as Mara’s accompanying editorial and profile. Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott shot the editorial and Jonathan Van Meter traveled to Sweden to profile the upcoming star of the hotly anticipated Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, in a piece that’s as much about breakout star Rooney Mara as it is about her relationship with her director, David Fincher.

It’s a good juicy profile, with lots of telling observations.

Rooney Mara (and David Fincher) on dropping weight to play Lisbeth Salander:

When a waiter appears to take our order, we are all looking at our menus, but I see out of the corner of my eye Fincher nudging Mara. He says with quiet seriousness, “You can eat.” I look up to see her reaction. Mara rolls her eyes, and Fincher laughs. “You can have lettuce and a grape. A raisin if you must.” She orders a piece of fish and barely touches it. In the book, Salander is described as boyish and awkward, “a pale, anorexic young woman who has hair as short as a fuse. . . .” Noomi Rapace, the magnetic star of the Swedish versions, looked more like Joan Jett. “One of the things that make our version that much more heartbreaking,” says Mara, “is that even though I am playing a 24-year-old, I look much younger. I look like a child.” I ask if she had to get unhealthily skinny for the role. She says, “Umm . . . not really.”
“It hasn’t been too hard for her,” Fincher quickly adds.

Mara on that controversial movie poster that shows Mara’s exposed breasts, plus a nipple piercing:

New York Spring 2012 Beauty Trend Alert: Slicked Back Faux Mullet

Monday, Sep 12, 2011 / 4:45 PM

OK, so maybe we were getting tired of seeing easy, beachy waves and braids on runways, but we never dreamed this would be the alternative. We’ve seen an alarming number of designers giving their girls wet, slick hair, but leaving it dry in the back. The resulting look is decidedly mullet-like. And also screams, “I just went to the gym, didn’t shower, slicked my hair back, and ran to this fashion show.” Read more »

Makeup tutorials have become a bit of an internet phenomenon. YouTube is flooded with how-to guides on everything from getting the perfect cat eye to emulating the look of [insert famous person here]. And despite the fact that most of them are done amateur-style, uploaded by non-professionals with nothing but a mirror and a MacBook, they are ridiculously popular.

Apparently CoverGirl wants in on the phenomenon–they’ve tapped legendary makeup artist (and CoverGirl Global Creative Design Director) Pat McGrath and ultimate makeup canvas Jessica Stam to shoot “major how-to videos.” A shoot took place yesterday, as did a @COVERGIRL / @Jess_Stam / @patmcgrathreal Twitter love fest, which is where the above behind-the-scenes photograph came from. Also, there were some indications that this collaboration will extend beyond just how-to videos.

There are very few things that can make me blow off my Saturday morning kickboxing class (Omar teaches it. Omar is hot.) Pat McGrath demonstrating Dolce & Gabbana’s summer makeup line at Saks was an exception, so instead of pretending to kick someone’s ass this past Saturday morning, I drank coffee and watched the makeup master work her magic.

Dolce & Gabbana introduced two lines for summer, with two distinctly different feelings that are nonetheless compatible.

We know the holidays aren’t about the getting or the spending, but if there was ever a time to wish for that bespoke Tom Ford, this is it.

From the windows at Saks and Barneys to the Christmas displays in Opening Ceremony, stores are transformed into wonderlands where even the most Scrooge-hearted of shoppers can’t help wistfully picking up that Céline tote.

In honor of Christmas fantasies, we’ve picked out the gifts we dream of receiving one day. Let’s hope Santa Karl is in a giving mood this year.

LeSportSac confirmed that Anna Wintour recently gifted her Vogue staff the brand’s totes in platinum ($98) and patent leather ($88).

So it’s no ten grand plus an iPad (Hi Oprah! We love you too! Winkface), but it’s something.

Why LeSportSac?
