Are Brands Overusing the Word Heritage?

Leah’s at the Pitti Uomo tradeshow in Florence this week, and undoubtedly she’s come across several “heritage” brands at the hundreds of booths shilling their earnestly designed shoes, jackets and jeans to the world’s top menswear buyers and editors.

The term “heritage” is commonplace in menswear—and beyond—thanks to the fashionable revival of traditional English brands (Barbour, Belstaff) and Made-in-America labels (Alden, Carhartt).

But with the introduction of Portland, Oregon-based Pendleton Woolen Mills’ new “heritage collection” last week, we wondered: has the use of the word “heritage” reached a saturation point?

Pendleton To Design New Line: Pendleton is tapping into their young hipster fanbase and creating a new line called Pendleton, The Portland Collection. It will be unveiled next month to launch for Fall 2011. {WWD subscription required}

Is Elle Moving to New Jersey?: Apparently Lagardère, who owns Elle, is considering two offers for the mag: one from Hearst and one from German publisher, Bauer. While Bauer publishes several mags overseas, they also publish titles in the US, namely tabloid weeklies In Touch and Life & Style, out of their US headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey (we know this because one time we worked at Bauer for three weeks–and that commute sucks so much). So if Bauer buys Elle, they might end up, gasp, in New Jersey! {WWD subscription required}

­Aishwarya Rai Bachchan May Sue Elle For Lightening Her Skin: There’s some controversy brewing as to whether Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s skin was lightened in her Elle India cover and now the Hindustan Times is reporting that she is “in disbelief” and may “take action.” {Hindustan Times}

This Weekend’s Top Weekender Bags

I’m a sucker for a good weekender bag. There are so many excellent ones out there–from the preppy to the minimalist to the, dare I say, directional. (As directional as a weekender can get.)

Given that it’s a holiday weekend, I’m assuming plenty of you are heading off to a family barbecue, a country cabin, or most likely, the beach. Maybe a combination of all three. I, for one, am writing this on a plane to Chicago. (Yes, American Airlines has Wi-Fi at every altitude!)

One thing’s for sure: Whether you want to spend $10 or $10,000, no one should be without a sturdy, good-looking weekender. Now, for some options:
