Young London Designers Are Getting Stiffed by Stores

If you’re a young designer just starting out and you sell your collection to a reputable retailer, it’s reasonable to assume that you’d receive timely payment in return, right? Nope, not necessarily.

Business of Fashion talked to some London-based designers who have had some pretty appalling experiences with retailers–late payments, unfair payment plans, and even no payments, leaving them and their fledgling businesses in bad shape.

Two concept stores, London’s LN-CC and Milan’s Corso Como, were cited as major offenders.

Peter Pilotto Fall 2012: Fetish Vehicles

LONDON–Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos are another London design team known for their prints. Pretty soon all of London is going to be covered in digital prints. But we’re not complaining.

Their first point of reference was “Japanese fetishized light trucks,” which are vehicles decorated with thousands of lights–these were made into exaggerated prints, as were carnations and irises. The palette was mainly blue, yellow, and green, accented with reds occasionally.

Christopher Kane Wins the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund

Christopher Kane is the this year’s winner of the British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. Along with a £200,000 (or $320,000) check, Kane and his sister/business partner Tammy will receive “director level mentors across the industry.”

The beloved Scottish designer’s biggest challenge was to present a business plan to a panel of judges, including British Vogue editor Alexander Schulman and Joan Burstein from Browns. (His competition included E. Tautz, Nicholas Kirkwood, Osman Yousefzada, Charlotte Olympia, Jonathan Saunders, and Peter Pilotto.)

Fashion’s Night Out is a little more than a month away and more details are being revealed around the world as the night gets closer.

For one, Hamish Bowles and Lauren Santo-Domingo will not be the only Vogue editors to appear on the September 20 FNO-themed Gossip Girl episode. Vogue market editor Meredith Melling-Burke will also make an appearance and we hear she’s wearing Chloe.

In other news, Payless is offering Facebook fans a chance to win a 5-day trip to NYC for Fashion’s Night Out. The “All Fashion Pass” will include access to the Vogue fashion show and a meet and greet with Payless designers Christian Siriano, Patricia Field, Lela Rose and Isabel Toledo.
