Tim Blanks on the Street Style Phenomenon: ‘It Makes Monsters, It Doesn’t Make Gods’

And the fashion circus debate continues.

The latest to weigh in is Garage magazine–except instead of bemoaning or celebrating the street style phenomenon one way or another, they merely explore it in this thoughtful new video featuring Tim Blanks, Tommy Ton, Phil Oh (in a bathtub!), Susie Lau and many others.

As one might expect, opinions run the gamut.

Proof that Street Style Has Lost Its Authenticity

Proof that Street Style Has Lost Its Authenticity

At some point “street style” referred to stylish people wearing their own clothes that they bought and put together in outfits themselves and then just went about their business. Now, there are stylists, PRs, agents, staged shoots, and more factors coming together to take the authenticity out of street style, especially during fashion week.

How soon before they just cut the charade of spontaneity and set up an actual red carpet in front of the tents?

SUNO Spring 2013

The Clothes: Demure, almost prairie-like separates in dust tones. Boxy tops were paired with oversized bottoms for a loose, summery silhouette, and most dresses featured a tiny cut out to reveal a slice of skin. As always, there were tons of prints; this season saw blue and white stripes, florals in orange, metallic, and pastel, Read more →

Taylor Tomasi Hill Talks Consulting On (Not Designing!) Sigerson Morrison’s Fall Collection

Taylor Tomasi Hill (or TTH as she’s come to be known) is one of those fashion girls who seems to be doing a million things at once: As the artistic director at Moda Operandi, she is responsible for the shopping site’s editorial content; you probably know her best from looking at any street style blog–where her scarlet hair and standout style make her an easy target; but you might not know that she’s also the creative consultant for Sigerson Morrison shoes. Yep, that’s a lot of (very stylish) hats.

So last evening, at the Bowery Hotel, Sigerson Morrison presented their (vast) fall collection at a party hosted by Tomasi Hill and the Street Peeper’s Phil Oh. And while we overheard TTH tell a fellow editor that she was on a “cleanse day” her enthusiasm for the shoe label overpowered any (probable) faintness she was feeling after a day filled with only juice.

What I Saw at Paris Fashion Week: Day 1

OK, so today wasn’t technically day one of Paris fashion week. Anthony Vaccarello started the week off with a bang yesterday–Karlie Kloss‘ first appearance of the season and falling models, oh my!–and Cedric Charlier debuted his first solo collection. But things really got started today. From vintage Zandra Rhodes on the runway for the first Read more →

Fashion News Roundup: Abbey Lee Kershaw May Be in a Spielberg Film, There Are More Details About the Prada/Schiaparelli Met Exhibit, and Angelina Jolie Covers Vogue Turkey

The Other Missing Model: Though we all miss Karlie, many have been surprised this season at the lack of Abbey Lee Kershaw on the runways. Turns out she’s having knee surgery tomorrow (ouch!). The model has been plagued with knee issues for years, and we certainly wish her a speedy recovery. But there’s also a rumor she’s working on the next Spielberg film – something her New York Agency Next Model Management did not confirm or deny. {Frockwriter}

Ferragamo Partners with the Louvre: The Italian brand has announced that it will be the exclusive sponsor of the upcoming exhibit “Saint Anne, Leonardo da Vinci’s Ultimate Masterpiece,” running from March 29 to June 25 at the Louvre. In an historic move, Ferragamo will show Resort on June 12 in the Denon wing, the first time the Louvre has allowed a fashion show within the museum itself. Chairman Ferruccio Ferragamo considers the sponsorship “a great honor.” {WWD}

Angelina’s Face Covers Vogue Turkey: She’s not just a pretty (and hilarious) leg. Jolie looks fantastic on the cover of this month’s Turkish edition of Vogue, reminding everyone that her face is just as worthy of attention as her gams. {ONTD}

Watch: This Amazing Video of Video of Fashion Peeps Dancing Is Your Reward for Finishing the Week

Congratulations, you made it through Fashion Week! And as a treat for making it through all those shows, industry parties and celebrity sightings, some lovely person by the name of David Sherwin has created this amazing video of NYFW-attendees dancing to the tune of Pitbull’s “I Know You Want Me.”

If that doesn’t sound like the awesome-est thing already, get psyched for seeing some of our favorite industry adorables, like Susie Lau of Style Bubble and Phil Oh of Streetpeeper shake their groove thing. It’s truly the antidote to any post-Fashion-Week blues–and it’s a visual refute to the accusation that the Fashion Week takes themselves too seriously.

Earthquake In NYC! Here are the Top Ten Reactions from Fashion Peeps on Twitter

Earthquake In NYC! Here are the Top Ten Reactions from Fashion Peeps on Twitter

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake just hit somewhere near Richmond, VA and tremors were felt from Washington D.C. to Manhattan (we may have thought there was a particularly hefty person stomping on the roof, at first…). Of course, we turned to Twitter as our first source to find out that, yes, that swaying we felt was, in fact, an actual earthquake in Manhattan of all places. And because fashion people Tweet their every waking moment, we rounded up some of the best reactions to the midday rumble:

Joe Zee (@mrjoezee)
Everyone’s ok at my @ELLEmagazine office here – clearly, since they’re all tweeting like crazy going down 41 flights of stairs. #Earthquake

DKNY PR GIRL (@dkny)
This is when everyone on the Wesrt Coast starts calling us drama queens….

Prabal Gurung (@prabalgurung)
It wasn’t an earthquake. Its momma nature’s tummy rumbling. hee hee.

Eva Chen Bannister (@evachen212)
okay, I’m kind of annoyed that what I assumed was me tripping in my slightly too big Chanel flatforms was actually an earthquake. what.

Lanvin x H&M’s Runway Show Was Everything and More

Lanvin x H&M’s Runway Show Was Everything and More

It’s a rare day when fashion people actually look like they’re having fun–pure, unadulterated fun–at a runway show. But tonight at the Pierre Hotel, Alber Elbaz debuted his Lanvin x H&M collection. So things were different.

The Scene: A tiny ballroom at the Pierre Hotel on the Upper East Side, and a runway decorated with mounds of hydrangeas. (Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent, who liked to decorate his runways similarly.)

The Players: Friends Sofia Coppola and Anna Sui (who wore a mix of Lanvin and her own designs), Andie Macdowell (the only person who makes me wish my hair was curly again), Alex Wang, Sally Singer, Grace Coddington, Emma Roberts, Elettra Wiedemann, and a gaggle of bloggers, including Fashionista favorites Susie Bubble, Phil Oh, and Bryan Boy.

The Runway:Yes, the one-of-a-kind versions of the H&M collection were stunning. But really, it was all about the atmosphere. And Anna Dello Russo. The models pranced down the runway much like they used to before the ’90s, “making love with the camera,” if you will. But of course ADR stole the show, stomping down the catwalk with a grey poodle. We love Anna, but a poodle makes her irresistible.
