Fashion News Roundup: Chanel Replaces Freja Beha Erichsen, a New Dior Photo Book, and Paula Deen Gets a Clothing Line

Frances Bean Marrying a Kurt Cobain Doppelganger?: Rumors are swirling that our fair Frances Bean is engaged to Isaiah Silva, a guy with longish hair and a beard who plays in a band and wears flannel shirts– a description that fits basically every male I went to college with, the entire neighborhood of Williamsburg, and my own brother. Yup, serious daddy complex there. {Gawker}

Chanel Replaces Freja Beha Erichsen in Carine Roitfeld-Styled Spring Ads: After five consecutive campaigns, Freja is being replaced in Chanel’s ads. Karl Lagerfeld said the new campaign, featuring Joan Smalls and Saskia de Brauw (and styled by Carine Roitfeld), will focus on “athletics and the sea.” Freja… forever in our hearts. {Fashionologie}

Band of Outsiders Takes on Pitti With a Little Night Music

FLORENCE–When Scott Sternberg said he was influenced by West Side Story and Singing in the Rain while putting together his Pitti Immagine runway show, I had a feeling there would be some epic musical element to the event, which took place yesterday at sunset on the grounds of an old tobacco factory.

And there was. Not only did it feature music from West Side Story, there were also professional dancers/models who opened and closed the show, launching into it with those famous finger snaps.

‘Dress Like a Man’ Kicks Off Pitti Uomo With Aplomb

FLORENCE–It’s that time of year again. We’ve landed in Italy for Pitti Immagine, the biannual trade show featuring the best of men’s fashion, as well as up-and-coming women’s designers. This season’s highlights include a Band of Outsiders runway show this evening and a Rodarte event tomorrow night, where the sister duo will launch a new collection as well as their first book: Rodarte, Catherine Optie, Alec South.

But as the young ones from Los Angeles prepared to take the stage, Pitti 80 kicked off with a particularly cool exhibition, curated by fashion historian and critic Olivier Saillard, whose most recent work includes the Madame Gres exhibit at the Palais Galliera fashion museum (where he is director). To uniquely highlight several of the standout menswear brands at the fair (including Brunello Cucinelli and Church’s), Saillard envisioned “Dress Like a Man,” a runway show/exhibition where female models twisted and reshaped traditional menswear into body conscious skirts, jackets, and dresses.

Sarah Jessica Parker Will Host 40 Fashion Bloggers at Pitti Uomo

Sarah Jessica Parker Will Host 40 Fashion Bloggers at Pitti Uomo

The folks behind Pitti Immagine, who put on the renowned Florence-based fashion fairs Pitti Uomo and Pitti W, hosted a luncheon this week to tell fashion editors what’s in store this June.

First off, Pitti Immagine is seriously loving LA this season, as Band of Outsiders‘ Scott Sternberg and Rodarte‘s Kate and Laura Mulleavy are the special guest designers for the men’s and women’s trade shows. Sternberg will present, according to a release, “a multifacted fashion event” on June 15 for Pitti Uomo while the Mulleavy sisters are working on a top-secret site-specific presentation and special collection for Pitti W.

But there’s another headliner at Pitti this June, an indication that the event is making strides to up their web visibility and star-factor: Sarah Jessica Parker and 40 fashion bloggers.

Virtual Tour: Pitti Uomo

Virtual Tour: Pitti Uomo

I spent last week in Florence, Italy covering Pitti Uomo and Pitti W, the men’s and women’s trade shows known best for translating high-fashion trends to retail. You won’t find middle-of-the-road brands at this event: Each label is either steeped in tradition, or starting a revolution in its specific category. (Whether that’s men’s brogues, outerwear, bow ties, or hats.)

When I wasn’t scurrying off to press previews, runway shows, or, um, blogging, I was floating from booth to booth, checking out what the vendors had on offer. Here’s a bit of what I saw. (Tomorrow, I’ll reveal my new street style icon, who I found at the fair.)

AI_Incontri at Pitti: Lipstick Red and Charcoal Grey

FLORENCE–As an editor, you see so much fashion that sometimes, as Diane Pernet says, you get “fashioned out.” In general, it takes a lot to delight and surprise me when it comes to womenswear. Especially after a month of shows.

So it was lucky that one of the few designers at Pitti creating pieces for women caught my eye before February’s runway storm. Andrea Incontri, winner of Pitti’s “WHO IS ON NEXT? UOMO” prize in the accessories category, staged a film and runway show/presentation at the Cinema Odeon on Piazza Strozzi. He showed a full collection–clothes, bags, accessories–for both men and women.

Gareth Pugh at Pitti: Video and Images From The Collection

FLORENCE–Ruth Hogben’s video of Gareth Pugh‘s special Pitti Uomo collection was masterful in capturing the lauded young designer’s brand. Whether or not it truly conveyed the beauty–and dare I say wearability?–of the actual clothes is another story. Indeed, Pugh put out some truly extraordinary pieces, some of which belong only on stage or on Daphne Guinness, and others which any fashion lover can dream of wearing.

The gowns, shown on models during the reception, were to be worn–not displayed. A favorite was a blue/turquoise style, which proved–to me, at least–that Pugh is not only worth his weight in showmanship, but also in desirability. There is a reason the luxury fashion houses watch him closely: it’s because he’s special.

Finally, I cannot stress the beauty of this ancient space, as you can see from the images. In this instance, fashion is art and at is fashion–there’s no argument about it.

(A less serious side note: After the film, I noticed everyone running towards one end of the room. I thought the models were coming up from the floor or something. In real life, it was just a bar stampede. I guess I don’t drink enough.)

Fabio Quaranta at Pitti Uomo: The Hallucinatory Mountain

FLORENCE–The coolest thing about Pitti–thus far, at least–is that every designer staging a runway show has hosted a press preview a few hours before their models start stomping. Not only is it nice to get a sneak peek at what’s to come, but it’s particularly useful to be able to chat with the designer beforehand–aiming for a backstage interview after the event is never fun, so this gives journos a chance to ask real questions in a less stressful situation.

Roman designer Fabio Quaranta opened the Cango Cantieri Goldonetta to us yesterday afternoon.
