Prada

Last season, Prada‘s spring bananas and bright colors beat out all other big labels to be featured on the most magazine covers with 77, as we counted it. Score one for their PR department. Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana trailed in second and third, but now with a new season and thousands of new covers, Prada has officially been dethroned.

If you’ve been to the American Apparel website in the past two days or so, you’ll have noticed that it’s Pantytime, which is considered a national holiday in Dov Charney-ville. What is Pantytime? It’s a sale on undies and also an excuse to post photos of young, sexy, 20-somethings in their knickers. You can’t fault American Apparel for ever going off-brand–they’ve got a schtick and they’re schticking to it. But same ole, same ole right?

But then in the middle of the slideshow of bottoms, a photo of a recognizable face popped up.

I read the little caption beneath, and wow, it’s Lea Seydoux, the darling actress from Woody Allen’s summer flick Midnight in Paris (which has just been extended to run until August 26) and Prada’s forthcoming Candy fragrance ads. She was a model before she was an actress (as all pretty French girls are), and after a little research I stumbled onto a ton of photos of her model cards, her as a brunette snapped by Garance, and there were also a few NSFW ones from her stint at American Apparel.

So click through to find out a little more about Pantytime and see Lea Seydoux’s XXX AA shots.

Balenciaga, part of PPR’s Gucci Group, may be well-regarded for its trend-withstanding handbags and innovative runway shows. But when it comes to marketing, the luxury label typically takes the traditional route, choosing the occasional magazine advertisement as its main source of communicating its brand to clients. At least those living in the US.

Until now.

Last night, I got a taste of what New York Fashion Week would be like if it was produced by Anna Wintour. Every show would begin on time. Only the best of the best designers would be invited to participate. And the music would be very, very good.

That pretty much sums up Fashion’s Night Out: The Show, which took place last night at the courtyard in Lincoln Center. Over a 1,000 looks–styled by Tabitha Simmons and Edward Enninful–stomped down a twisting runway that must have been a quarter of a mile long in total. Everyone–from Alex Wang to Balenciaga–was featured. Simmons and Enninful chose to style the models as they were originally styled, meaning Prada‘s girls got boufants, and Balenciaga’s wore pastel eyebrows. It was unoriginal, but with so many looks, understandable. Pretty much every model working today walked, including favorites of mine like Dree Hemingway and Ashley Smith. Gisele even made an appearance near the end, shortly after NERD performed in the center of the venue.

The paper program was masterful, save for a weirdly photo-shopped Lara Stone on the cover. (A friend said that her waist “looked tinier than Karly’s–creepy.”) Every single clothing credit was included, which is a two day-long job on its own.

All in all, it was a successful event. Especially for those who hadn’t seen these looks come down the runway last February.

Fashionista contributor Long Nguyen is the co-founder/style director of Flaunt.

“Life in the Fat Lane,” the third chapter of media studies professor Laura Kipnis’ 1996 book Bound and Gagged, juxtaposed the dilemma of fat fetish pornography and how popular culture confront the issue of fat and desire. On one hand, obese porn, a niche in the vast porn business, is an absolute revolt against the dictatorial and incessant aesthetic of thinness. On the other, the images of these chubby women–often 44-35-44–entice desires that contradict and challenge prevailing cultural norms.

Yet over the past decade, the fat porn market has grown tremendously as acceptance of full size women becomes the norm. At least in the porn industry. Once a province of cheap production titles, big studios have been producing lavish titles with more budgets. The advance of web technology has allowed better quality for those choosing to self-published. Even the nomenclature has changed–the category is now called BBW or Big Beautiful Women. Hardly anyone ever mentions “fat porn” in an age where the “deviant” bodies of April Flores, Karla Lane, Kelly Shibari and Bonnie de la Cruz–some of the industry’s stars–are becoming household names.

So, despite what you’ve seen and heard, fashion people loooovvve to eat. And they love to eat really, really good food.

The Fashionista staff is not immune to this. In fact, we embrace it wholeheartedly. But there’s not much time to dig-in during New York Fashion Week. So we’ve rounded up our favorite spots, events, and parties that might end up being more about the food than the scene. And maybe even the clothes.

Bird‘s Fashion’s Night Out event takes the cake though (and we do hope there will be cake). Owner Jen Mankins has some serious foodie clout in addition to her discerning fashion eye. After the jump, she dishes on she how she wrangled the Brooklyn foodie elite and her favorite meals at Frankie’s and Prime Meats.

There was no denying that Prada’s launch party for their new Swing sunglasses collection at Joe’s Pub was the main event last night.

But to get warmed up, we hit up the alice + olivia M.A.C. cosmetics collection launch at Beauty Bar first. Though it seems strange to get a manicure in the middle of a party when there’s a significant risk of getting whacked in the head by an overstuffed bag or having a cocktail spilled on you, girls were lined up to get pampered. The party was chock full of models in tiny dresses, and as we made our exit, an over-tanned ex-model in the tiniest dress breezed past us smelling like Bath and Body Works. Why hello Kelly Killoren Bensimon! You are so tall!

On to the next.

Stepping into Prada’s party at Joe’s Pub was like stepping into the most fashionable jazz club. The lights were low, a jazz singer crooned, Angela Lindvall, the star of Prada’s fall print campaign and brand new Stephen Meisel directed video, sat pretty in a corner by the bar, and models decked in Prada Swing sunnies and cone-head-like bouffant hair posed like beautiful aliens throughout.
