The first Dior ready-to-wear ad campaign under the direction of Raf Simons has finally hit the web.
Shot by Willy Vanderperre, the campaign images are as much a departure from the dramatic style of John Galliano as the collection itself–along with a little Surrealist influence from René Magritte.
From Raf Simons’ appointment at Dior, to Nicolas Ghesquiere’s departure from Balenciaga, and the arrival of several new ‘It’ girls (or ‘It’ felines, anyway), 2012 brought a lot of big changes in the fashion industry. And, of course, we were on hand to report every single one of them.
We thought the holiday season was the perfect time to spread a little love throughout the fashion industry–but since we don’t see Hedi Slimane sending Cathy Horyn a Christmas card anytime soon, we decided to use our imaginations.
Naturally, journalists are curious about Simons’s opinion of the designer he replaced–and he’s been pretty forthcoming. Most recently, he went so far as to suggest that Christian Dior would probably not be a fan of John Galliano’s eccentric designs.
From Raf Simons’s abrupt departure from Jil Sander to his surprise appointment at Dior–and his subsequent critically-acclaimed debut there–Simons has been a hot topic in the industry lately. But we haven’t heard much from the designer himself about his recent career changes and what went on behind-the-scenes at Jil Sander and Dior.
However, in Vogue Australia‘s December issue (posted on The Fashion Spot), Simons opened up to Lisa Armstrong about his landmark year–from being in talks with Bernard Arnault for “months” to finding John Galliano’s designs not “relevant.” Read on.

After last month’s infamous war-of-words with Oscar de la Renta (in which they called each other hotdogs and hamburgers), Cathy Horyn has gotten herself into another scrap–and this time it’s with Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane.
During Slimane’s debut RTW show for Saint Laurent yesterday, many (including us) couldn’t help but notice Horyn’s absence. Today, a rep confirmed to us that the NY Times critic had indeed not been invited. But why? Though Saint Laurent declined to give a reason, Horyn has an idea. And it has to do with Raf Simons.
Besides the now-ubiquitous blue eye makeup, a mini-trend of hot pink eyes, and a few alien-esque theatrical looks, eyes on the runway this season have been pretty darn boring–until Pat McGrath came along at Dior and bedazzled the heck out of everyone.
If there was a theme to Raf Simon’s debut ready-to-wear collection for Dior it was liberation. Liberation, which is so central to Dior’s heritage, as it was Christian Dior’s “New Look” in 1947 that instantly erased the harsh memories of the limitations imposed by World War II and embraced femininity in fashion once again. And it was a liberation for Raf Simons, too, who wanted to move beyond his own minimalist heritage by injecting a bit of sensuality and emotion into his pared down style.
After months of debate and speculation (and comparisons to Hedi Slimane), Raf Simons finally made his ready-to-wear debut at Dior. We livestreamed, twittered, and internet eavesdropped to bring you absolutely every detail we could glean about the show.
