Breaking News: Rent the Runway Teams Up With Lancôme to Sell Makeup

Rent the Runway–the service that lets you rent designer dresses for a few days at a time–is teaming up with Lancôme to sell a selection of color makeup, including Juicy Tubes, eyeliners, and bronzer.

The goal is to give RtR (www.renttherunway.com) clients the “head to toe” experience: Not only can you now wear a high-end dress for a fraction of the price, you can have makeup that complements your new look delivered in the same package.

“Lancôme is the perfect partner for our entry into beauty,” Rent the Runway CEO Jennifer Hyman said in a statement. “They’re a luxurious, aspirational and sophisticated brand, just like our designer partners.”

It’s no surprise Rent the Runway is entering the full-price market, and beauty seems like a smart way to do it. Lancôme may be luxurious, but it’s prices are attainable. A Color Design Lipstick, for instance, is $22. Not cheap–but not crazy, either. These impulse purchases should add a nice little cushion to RtR’s top line. (The site also sells lingerie at full-price.)

Yigal Azrouël on His New Bridgehampton Store, Working With Rent the Runway and Why He’d Be Into Doing a Target Collab

Since the launch of his eponymous women’s label in 1998, Yigal Azrouël has opened a flagship boutique, launched a men’s line, introduced accessories and developed the contemporary label Cut25. Yet between all of these projects, the dashing designer always manages to stay calm, cool, and collected. Last week was no different as Azrouël welcomed party goers into his meatpacking district boutique for a special shopping event, co-hosted by Rent the Runway.

We got a chance to chat with the man behind the brand–clad in his uniform of a leather motorcycle jacket with jeans and a t-shirt–about his particular road to success.

The Folks Behind Vena Cava, Opening Ceremony and Rent the Runway Dish On Their Secrets To Success

Less than two weeks after showing their fall collection at Milk, Vena Cava’s Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai took center stage at the fashion week hub once again as part of Fashion Group International and consultant Karen Harvey’s panel on entrepreneurship. The Vena Cava girls, along with Rent the Runway co-founders Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Fleiss, and Opening Ceremony‘s Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, came together to share their own “How I’m Making It” stories.

The editors, designers, and consultants who circled back to Milk to hear them speak last night were well-rewarded, not with swag or a tote bag or any of the other requisite fashion event handouts, but with proof that while Milan may be the center of fashion news this week, these determined and ambitious New Yorkers have a lot of knowledge to drop if you’re looking to make your way in the fashion industry. Like how to find a factory, how to tap your customer base as an invaluable (and free!) resource, and why you should trust your gut instincts.

The take-home lessons:

Fashion Group International Crowns Rising Stars

Fashion Group International Crowns Rising Stars

Yesterday the fashion elite trudged through the snow, changed out of their snow boots and slipped into their four-inch heels, to attend the Fashion Group International’s 14th annual Rising Star Awards at Cipriani’s in midtown.

While Fashion Group International’s (FGI) annual celeb-saturated “Night of Stars” event tends to grab more column inches and flashbulbs, host Jamie Pallot, Condé Nast Digital’s editorial director, stressed the importance of “Rising Stars” for recognizing emerging talent that needs the exposure more than the established design stars feted on “Night of Stars.” But Norma Kamali, who gave the opening remarks, questioned stardom. “What happens if you don’t become a star?” she asked. “I never wanted to be a star…I’m just my own little constellation doing my thing and I love it a lot.”

Whether yesterday’s winners will become “stars” remains to be seen. But what is clear is that the winners and all the nominees in categories ranging from fine jewelry to interior design to men’s and women’s apparel are talented folks whose careers will hopefully benefit from their nods from FGI. The stars came in the way of presenters–Lauren Bush, Linda Fargo and Catherine Malandrino were all on hand to doll out awards.

So who took home a Rising Star award?

Gaga in Zoolander 2?: Thankfully, things are moving right along for Zoolander 2, and Owen Wilson has said that ‘Gaga has to be in it.’ Agreed. As long as you’re in the scene with her, Owen. {Monsters and Critics via Jezebel}
