My Pointy and Impractical Lana Del Rey Nails Are Ruining My Life But I’m Completely Obsessed with Them

Until quite recently, the fashion world has pretty much recognized only one shape of fingernail as being en vogue: Neatly filed, short, and downright square. All other lengths were reserved for, in my mind, mythical, longer-nailed renegades like Flo-Jo and my mother. But not me–no, I went cautiously along with the fash pack, clipping my nails (or let’s be honest, picking them) diligently so that the whites barely extended past the edge of my fingertips. Life, including my nails, was simple. But simple is boring, right?

Which helps to explain the reason I was so totally enamored with Lana Del Rey when I first saw her early this year. It wasn’t her overripe lips that intrigued me (though it is hard not to stare), it was her talon-like nails: Super long, pointy, feminine, impractical, amazing–and soon to be plastered over Subway stations, billboards, and shopping malls alike in H&M’s fall/winter campaigns. But LDR wasn’t the only style-conscious celeb to nail this trend: As if by magic (or acrylic), Rihanna, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga all began flaunting what some have deemed “stiletto nails.” And I needed them too.

Disco Isn’t Dead: From Madonna to Beyoncé, Donna Summer’s Style Lives On

We were saddened to hear today about the passing of Donna Summer, who lost her battle to lung cancer today at the age of 63. Summer moved us (both physically and emotionally) with her strong, sultry vocals, smoldering stage presence, and of course, her unabashedly glamorous look.

Not only did her voice define a genre, but her style set the standard for divas to come. You don’t have to look far to see traces of Donna’s style in some of our most beloved stars today.

So, to honor of the late Queen of Disco, here is a tribute to the continued legacy she left on fashion. From Lady Gaga to Toni Braxton, click through to see Donna’s style influence.

Anonymous Retail Rant: Don’t Leave Your (Used) Feminine Items in the Dressing Rooms, and Other Rules to Shop By

After a year of working as a sales associate at a well-known, fast fashion chain in downtown New York, I’ve had my fair share of good and bad customers. A good, appreciative, understanding customer can make even the most stressful, cramped, miserable days of retail (which, let’s face it, are many and close between) feel like a stroll through a well aerated, uncrowded, naturally lit park. Well, almost.

I’ve had ladies shriek with delight when I’ve handed them the store’s last pair of suspender tights that Rihanna wore. Or the flag-print hotpants Rihanna wore. Or anything Rihanna wore. Many customers have specifically requested my name following our interaction, so as to tell my higher-ups how helpful they found me (though sadly, I do not work on commission). One customer literally jumped up and down hugging me when I returned from an arduous journey to the stock room and back with last season’s faded pink skinny jeans that were no longer on the sales floor. “I hope you’re here next time I come,” she squealed, “I’m going to ask for you!” To which I replied, “For my sake, let’s hope I’m not.”

So what, you ask, has caused this level of embitterment?

Sarah Burton Made the Time 100 List (Plus See the Other Fashion Peeps Who Made the Cut)

Sarah Burton Made the Time 100 List (Plus See the Other Fashion Peeps Who Made the Cut)

Each year Time releases its list of the 100 most influential people in the world, including a wide range of individuals–from CEOs and politicians to pop stars and scientists–and needless to say it’s kind of a big deal if you make the cut.

Last year, Tom Ford was the only fashion industry player to get a nod, but happily this year’s list has a few more fashion peeps on it. Also happily, they’re all women.

This year’s list is also different because Time enlisted the help of notables like Sarah Jessica Parker, Katie Couric and Stella McCartney to actually write the blurb on each honoree.

Click through to see which fashion industry players made the list.
